- “I’d say it’s more or less impossible for them to go on the offensive anymore.”
Russia’s ability to protect its assets on the Kola Peninsula, where its northern fleet and nuclear arsenal is located, has “declined considerably,” says Major General Pekka Toveri, former Finnish Major General.
Pekka is joined by host James Heappey and Robert Fox, the Evening Standard’s defence editor.

Finland is an amazing military power for its size history is proof of that..
Supporting Ukraine’s success is the Canadian north’s best security
Agreed -- but Canada hasn't kept any of its NATO promises, and appears to have no plan to do so. Canada was a heroic nation in WW I and WW II, contributing more per capita (and taking higher losses ditto) than the US. To it's "the check isn't even in the mail."

After a few months of fighting Ukraine, I said that it will take Russia years to rebuild it's military. Not just equipment, but manpower as well.
What seems to me is the biggest problem for Russia in the Arctic is not the Kola Pedinsula itself but the hundreds of kilometers of rail/road paralleling the Finish border. The Kola in turn supplies most of the bases Putin has been building along the Arctic perifery. Cut the rail/roads and not only Kola is without supplies but most of their other bases. As said the Arctic is a very demanding environment but also any infastructure is very brittle..
I wonder if the Finnish general is aware that the US has massive military resources in the 49th state of Alaska, a substantial portion of which, is well above the Arctic Circle. This also includes numerous military exercises in cold war combat from several of the bases in Fairbanks, Anchorage, Galena etc etc. He talks like the USA has zero resources capable of Arctic warfare.
The U.S. also has a military presence in northern Greenland.
What would happen if China took over Mongolia and siberia? Giving then access to the Arctic ocean which will become ice free and be an easier place to ship from. Full of energy reserves. Russian forces in the east being poor. It would be an excellent time for them to do it.
Mongolia and Siberia are both Chinese and Russia annexed them in the 1850s. The Chinese have made it crystal clear that they want their old empire back and Russia is weaker thn ever, right now.
Wait for it.
That has been an ages and ages old worry for Russia, since they "settled" in and took over Siberia. The territory is hash and hard to exert much control over without some infrastructure (the Russians struggle with building the railroad, but it still gives them an advantage) - but the Chinese do want and need more *land* ...
(the military author Tom Clancy had some... comments about Chinese designs on Russian Far East territories, in a few of his novels, among other authors)
Both Russia and China (and most certainly Mongolia itself!) prefer to have Mongolia as an independent quasi-neutral 'no mans land' in between them. China prefers to get the supply of minerals from Mongolia (as is currently the case) without the hassle of a longer border with Russia. Russia also does not want a longer border with China.
Soon China will take back Manchuria,, friendship without borders may mean putler will give it to them, he may have no choice
Uuuh....as a Canadian, we have way better arctic equipment, lots of it. The people that live in our arctic are smart, strong, resourceful, people. Never a mind all the ice-breakers and heavy-hulled ships we have specifically FOR this area. That's our NATO obligation that WE ARE NOW MEETING.
👍👍🇺🇸.

The problem with the Arctic transport pathway compared to the "southern route thru the Indian Ocean and the Red Sea is really simple: There's nothing along the route in the Arctic path, whereas you've got dozens of the world's largest cities along the "southern" route. The Arctic route would be transport only, with no intermediate business. The "southern" route does as much or more business in transit as it does at delivery. But -- there may be a tremendous opportunity for Russia to homestead its North.
Russia has a shortage of people and production, not land.

I have to wonder about Russian money and gold reserves. USSR imploded because the squandered royal reserves and weren’t able to keep military payroll solvent. I can’t imagine Russia having earned enough since 2000 to have replenished any of the reserves without them being stolen by the oligarchs and hidden in Swiss or East Caribbean banks.
Boycott Russia!
Focus sub detection in the Davis straight on the floor (and between the floor and surface, for that matter). They sit and hide there with Yasen class a lot. The water is shallower there so they can just sit and wait for quite a while, then, if they get the command, can come closer to the surface and fire from there.
