I've always loved this song. It's so off kilter. The riff sounds so dark, dirgy & heavy, but then the vocals, lyrics & melody are so beautiful & cryptic. 🖤
I have also heard that Chris has said it’s about PTSD for veterans and how fireworks can trigger them to have attacks thinking there is gun fire going off and often we are celebrating the veterans service on the 4th of July. So it’s a bit ironic that we do that and potentially hurt them by celebrating their service. And I see where it comes from but also have read this story of his acid trip a few times too. Great review! Chris’s solo stuff is great as well as all Soundgarden albums and his lyrics on Audioslave are some of my favourite of all time.
Yesssss, love you for this. Happy 4th! When I think of "grunge" I think of dark abstract poetry combined with slow, sludgy, distorted guitar riffs. Most of the bands labeled as grunge came out of Seattle, known for the constant rain which can also be very depressing. I think you hear that in their music.
Saying Grunge is like "Meat on a smoker" is such an apt metaphor, very insightful! Grunge is dark, sorrow, hurt, pain that is so deep that it's become lethargic. That feeling of being so down that you just don't have the energy to do anything about it. The lyrics are usually poetic, sometimes meaningful too. I'd LOVE to see you two react to "Comet" by The Midnight sometime! Synthwave is such an amazing genre!
Grunge was a reaction to the previous decade of taking showmanship ( laser light shows, big pyrotechnics, hair spray, and glitter ) as far as it could go. Talent, great songwriting and passionate perfomances began to cut through the plastic, industry-driven, self-parody that eighties product had become. The opposite of performers in day-glo spandex, hair spray, and lipstick was those in ripped jeans or nylons, with unwashed hair and smudged make-up.
The best term Lex used was Raw! It’s real and undisguised. After the party life, hair band era, people embraced Grunge because it showed where this life may lead without putting lipstick on it. And a lot of people were suffering through it or dying because of it
4th of July has always stood out to me on this album since I first heard it in 94. I used to listen to my dad's cassette tape of Superknown. I enjoy rediscovering music while watching your reactions! Thanks 😊
It's nice to see someone doing something different for once...amazing dark album. The bass strings are practically falling off it's tuned so low...Happy Fourth of July 🎆
I've been listing to this song, and LOVING IT for nearly 30 years, and I never knew the back story until watching your video! thank you! .....and now I love it even MORE!
Grunge musicians were influenced by the Punk music scene of 20 years earlier. Grunge is post post punk rock And yes. 4th of July was about an acid trip Chris Cornell had.
I mean not all grunge is post punk rock, nirvana fits that description but none of the other big 4 fit that description especially SG and Alice In Chains. Grunge was more of a movement and acne and not a specific or genre, Alice In Chains sounds absolutely nothing like Nirvana but they’re still both 2 of the big 4 grunge bands. AIC were much more inspired by bands like Black Sabbath than any post punk stuff, Pearl Jam was also like more stadium rock type stuff but nothing like post punk.
Oh my God it's funny you say that about wine. I've often compared Soundgarden's music to to a fine wine. It can be liked and enjoyed by anybody really, but it'll be best appreciated by people who can understand its structure and its layers and what has gone into making it.
Also, I really hope yall get into more Chris Cornell music, as he's one of the greatest vocalist in modern rock. Soundgarden, Temple of the Dog, and Audioslave are his bands, plus his solo work. In particular, his covers of "Billie Jean" and "Nothing Compares to You" are top notch. Love watching your reviews, and listening to your often deep commentary!
Meat on a Smoker is perfect for grunge. It just IS Seattle. Washington. Cloudy, rainy, Pacific Northwest. Flannel. Boots. Long hair. Of the earth. Real. Nothing phony. No bs. Just rock and roll with sprinkles of punk, classic rock, and country.
I love the way she explained Grunge. If I had to explain it, I'd say it's raw, gritty, dirty, unpolished and pure and genuine. It's a mix of punk and metal.
I think the word you were looking for near the beginning was "poetic." Chris's lyrics are often poetic. They're meant to evoke a feeling, rather than being a literal description of anything. In some ways I like this form of lyricism more, because it encourages you to listen to the voice part as an equal to the other instruments.
- The footage is of nuclear tests. - The song was based around a trip they took to an Native Reservation and dropped acid. - There was this guy from Seattle who was pretty good at playing guitar, called Jimi Hendrix. Who created a psychedelic take on the Star Spangled Banner. This was Soundgarden's shoutback. - To show how good this song is, the two voices singing are both Chris Cornell, which really shows off his range in a single song.
The idea of the song came while Chris was getting pulled over by the police, while tripping on acid. The lights reminded him of the fourth of July. Chris purposely wrote lyrics that meant nothing in particular. Yes he was amused when people tried figuring the meaning
Lex i love your analogy for grunge. I feel that for sure. It's imperfect, it's real, it's raw, it's dark, but they don't take themselves too seriously. There's almost a crunch in the guitar riffs (this being a great example of what I mean). There's a haunting quality to a lot of it that reaches into your soul..... early 90's Seattle rock bands is what you're looking at here, in terms of what's actually classified as grunge.
Chris Cornell once said that he writes the song but once he gives it away it's no longer his anymore it's in the consumer's hands to interpret it it in any way that it works for them
Chris will always be one of my favs, and from what I understand, he did very little editing. He would run with the first words that came to him. Tom Morello is one record saying that they played him a sing idea and Chris had coffee and stared at the ground. The next time they played it, Chris sang the entire thing! What a gift!
Grunge = "Sludgy" yet heavy instrumentals, deep/heavy (grimy/messy ie., grungy) lyrics.... that's how Grunge" has always read in my head anyway!! LOVE it!! ;)
Super rad that she picked up on those octave changes in the voices during the chorus. It’s haunting and one of the coolest parts of the song. This is a bad ass slow jam. Check out: Down, Bury Me In Smoke.
This has always been my favorite Soundgarden song. I always took it as a breakup song. The 4th of July is Independence Day. He was trying to ignore what was happening, but he was seeing and hearing it everywhere until he realized it was over and declared his independence from his tormenter
3:58 You were close on the visuals. The video had been playing old capture footage of nuclear detonation tests. Land and sea, both. The ship in that footage was an old decommissioned WW2 vessel being used in nuke tests during the Cold War, along with many others back in the days of nuke testing.

Ok but Grunge was king when I was in HS and as much as I wanna go full on Aslan and say "don't quote the old magic to me witch, I was there when it was written," I can't because honestly, Lex' descriptions of grunge might be the best I've ever heard. Honestly with most of the music from that era, there is no deciphering the lyrics straight on. You gotta come at them sideways cause that was how they were written. Anyway Happy 4th everyone!

My take on ”grunge”: Heavy bluesy Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin grooves but with a more layered and progressive sound, at times almost jazzy, arty (and sometimes experimental) postpunk/new wave edge and feel set to Beatlesish melodies and introspective philosophical lyrics. I recommed you do ’Fell On Black Days’ next. I think you’ll might find the lyrics still relevant today.
Happy 4th! You guys should do a dual reaction to Soundgarden's Rusty Cage followed by Johnny Cash's cover of the song. Also you still need to do AC/DC!!!
Beautiful description of Grunge 😁 It was a term coined by journalists about the bands coming out of Seattle in the late 80s early 90s. The main ones being Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam and Nirvana. They are actually all quite different, Nirvana more punk influenced, Soundgarden more blues rock. But it struck a chord at the time as a reaction to the flashy ‘hair metal’ of the 80s, because it was more authentic and raw.
Check out some of Chris's solo work.... "Billie Jean" his acoustic cover of Michael Jackson's Pop song.... Chris turned it into something EPIC!! It'll give you goosebumps!!! Chris has a HUGE solo catalogue as well as his music with Soundgarden, Audioslave and Temple Of The Dog (a one-time album in tribute to his late-friend Andrew Wood)... ***** Out of that collab PEARL JAM was born!! "HUNGER STRIKE" from T.O.T.D. is Crhis and Eddie Vedder (Pearl Jam)... their voices together are also EPIC and will get you fired up Lex!! ;)
Grunge came about as a reaction to the super polished pop and rock of the 80s to make something rawer and more authentic and with a particular focus on the darker sides of life - in particular addiction, mental issues and abuse. This sort of evolved into nu-metal in the 90s, with the same lyrical themes and focus on downtempo songs with downtuned, distorted guitars but with hiphop and tribal music influences.
Grunge was part of the early 90s most easily identified by the raw emotional lyrics, guitars strum to a slow drawn out groove. Folk background and the story at the end reminded me of the movie the DOORS. about the seventies band. Chris was a super deep personality 😈🤘glad you enjoyed it

I'm so glad you did this song, and so annoyed the algorithm has only now shown me! This is one of my favourite Soundgarden songs and one that NEVER gets touched on such channels. As for its meaning, it's left open to interpretation, but for me, it's about a personal, existential apocalypse, but that's just me though.
I love this song. Great to see someone doing a reaction to it, regardless of reasoning. Cornell's low register doubled with high register belting right thru the thing, on top of that dirty low-tuned core guitar riff, with bass & drums beefing it up into one of the most oppressive dirges you're ever likely to come across.... so satisfying. I got totally weirded-out when the song finished btw, & had to play the last couple of songs out immediately!! ("Superunknown" is very much an *album* to me, & should be listened to as such) :)
Grunge is basically a type of post-punk/metal, or rock that came out the other side of both. I dunno, but I went to loads of punk shows in the 80s, and nearly every one had at least one metal band in the lineup. Then I started hearing "grunge," and it felt like a natural progression, or a mutation that totally fit. The people in all those bands were going to the same kinda shows throughout the 80s, just in a different town.
The different vocals you're hearing is Chris. He double tracked his vocals. Maybe even triple tracked on this tune. There's the low, baritone and high tenor he sings... doing the same lyrics sang at the same time and that give it that layered sound.
This is the first one on my top-10 mix for Soundgarden (I just like making 10-song back-to-back mixes of bands I like, as a kinda hobby). In case you wanted to check any others out, the list is: Fourth of July, Black Rain, Blind Dogs, Zero Chance, Pretty Noose, Limo Wreck, Cold Bitch, Bones of Birds, Like Suicide, Tighter & Tighter.
Love this girl, she's officially a Grunge/Metal Head... Welcome.
Isn’t she the cutest thing?

I love Lexis take on stuff - it’s all layers of art
Lex’s Perfect encapsulation of grunge.
I haven't heard this song in years and I'm a gen X Seattle dude.
@@bothellkenmore I still listen to this album often & I'm a gen X Scotland dude! Well met :)
Meteor shower.. but the bad kind.
And this, I would call sludge.
My fav Soundgarden song. Good reaction!
i got this cd and played the hell out of it..this song is just one that I got into..the whole cd is great..music I didnt play into the lyrics too much
Love this song. Great Reaction. xxx
The different vocals you're hearing is Chris. He double tracked his vocals. Maybe even triple tracked on this tune. There's the low, baritone and high tenor he sings... doing the same lyrics sang at the same time and that give it that layered sound.
I know the next 4th of July is half a year away but a suggested reaction for July 4, 2022 is Jimi Hendrix - Star Spangled Banner.
Awesome glad you got to hear this one!
Soundgarden- Cochise. It's perfect 4th of July song. Music video is full of fireworks and it's a badass song lol
Chris did cochise with Audioslave good song tho
This is the first one on my top-10 mix for Soundgarden (I just like making 10-song back-to-back mixes of bands I like, as a kinda hobby). In case you wanted to check any others out, the list is: Fourth of July, Black Rain, Blind Dogs, Zero Chance, Pretty Noose, Limo Wreck, Cold Bitch, Bones of Birds, Like Suicide, Tighter & Tighter.
