    I wish I couldve came by this video in 2017. I went to parsons as a fashion major in 17' and dropped out of college after freshman year. Parsons was at its peak during these years because they were pushing heavy PR for this school. I went home depressed and worried about my future but it didnt stop me from achieving where I wanted to go in life. I've worked at a manufacturing house that made clothes for some of the most famous brands out there, learned management and sewing for free while being paid. this eventually led me to get connected with one individual who ran a startup and I was called for the position of a creative director. Its been 4 years now, and I have no college debt or anykind of problems with finance, but its funny that im actually going back to parsons to switch my major to design and technology. Planning to break into the industry, and not having the goal as to graduate. IM also from LA so congrats on coming to the west coast! wishing you the best!

    Thank you for such honesty. I'm happy that you were able to take a step to better your mental health by leaving Parsons. I'm currently deciding between Parsons and a few schools as I graduate from my senior year but I truly appreciate you sharing your experiences. I'm glad that you are now happy in your new environment :)

    I entered Parsons as a 2nd year student (transferred) in the Fashion program in the early 90’s. It took so much work to even make it in, that when I decided it wasn’t for me, I was very disappointed in the school and myself. I left after one year, and I wasn’t alone; many did not continue on. My experience was that the amount of teaching was very, very low. The expectation to perform and complete your assignments were at a level that only students with prior expertise in that field could pull off at the required speed. There was one class per day, about 7 hours long. Each class would assign 8-hours of homework, due at the next week. That added up to 15 hours of work per day for 5 days, with presentation of a completed piece per class. People hardly slept; I once stayed up for 72 hours. For students that didn’t have sewing skills or a prior knowledge to finishing, quickly fell behind and there was no recovery. For the 20% of the students that kept up, worked in the trade or came from a upbringing in tailoring/fashion etc., so the leg up was necessary. It was sobering to experience, but I made the right decision. I feel like the faculty and instructors were (in this era) resting on the laurels of the Parsons name and did not feel the need to teach every student. It was a shame. I hope that you still feel that you made the correct decision (it seems that way) and that you continue to thrive and find your calling. The best of luck to you.

    I went through something similar this year! It can be so hard to change paths especially if it's for something you've wanted for so long. I spent most of my senior year trying to convince my parents an art program was for me only to change majors partway through. It was embarrassing and confusing and even though I'm happy I did it a part of me wonders what could have been. I kind of wish I moved to community college instead of a major switch just so I could explore myself more but at the same time I'm glad to get any degree by this point.

    Thank you for filming this it really gave me some perspective. I just got accepted into Parsons for photography and I’m having a hard time deciding if I would want to go there or somewhere else. I’ve always wanted to go to a school in New York but I’m afraid of exactly what you mentioned in this video, feeling out of place and not happy with the classes you take. I also wanted to know if Parsons has any black professors that you know of because to me that is also really important.

    • @reedingbook

      I don't remember too many black professors if I am being honest...However, I was only there for a year so my knowledge is limited.

    @beepboop8973 4 года назад +6

    Hey, it's great that you've been able to figure out what worked for you! I was just wondering if
    1. Are you still doing that same course in your local comm col? Or did you decide not to do photography as a whole after being in parsons.
    2. Did you do your 'research' before coming in to parsons prior to your application?
    I'm trying my best to find out more about the different schools and how life is like but, every video that pops up is "why I left school xyz". I just want to know if my 'research' would even matter, bc what I find might turn out to be different from what I experience.

    I wish I saw this 3 years ago. I do agree about what you say about your feelings on maybe struggling to finish because of the time and the money one may invest in going to school. I certainly did and didn't have the luxury to leave. I will say that Parsons didn't do anything to ensure their students got the things they needed. I say this because I went to school during the Pandemic while the school was shut down. Again a luxury I wish I had in taking a leave of absence. I can't justify the tuition prices when I got no resources, studio space, or even the networking that you are paying for when going to these schools. I feel scammed honestly and would never endorse this school for anyone.

    Nearly 40 years ago I was trying to decide Parsons vs SVA. I got into a darkroom at Parsons, met a woman and asked her -- she said SVA so I walked down to 23rd St and enrolled. Happy I studied at SVA but money problems at home and not wanting debt I left.

      Honestly if you have a hard time teaching yourself and you believe you can handle the tuition then do it. If your broke and you can teach yourself and or take online classes, then do that. College isn't for everyone so don't get discouraged when you see these videos. Most of the people who make these videos on why they left or don't like art school is based on their personal experiences and struggles... Since art school is so expensive, your going to it for the education, not the degree! Remember, your not going to college to make friends or hang out, but your going to pursue your dreams. Stay focus, work hard, be strong and you'll make it. You gotta marry your work!

    • @catherinevalli6830
      @catherinevalli6830 4 года назад +2

      M. Mills if you plan on applying anywhere for work this is very poor advice. no HR department or designer seeking an apprentice will hire anyone who “taught” themselves. There is no replacement for learning in a professional environment. This approach will leave you working in retail for the rest of your life.

    • @eARThinlife
      @eARThinlife 3 года назад +3

      @@catherinevalli6830 that depends on the major. For example, there are a ton of animators that are amazing, have a high paying job and were self taught. Most cases in art, its about your portfolio and not the degree! and especially where you got it!

    Hearing stories about design schools @America seems like it's not worth it. I live in Switzerland and my tuition fee is only 780$ per semester at University. But then since education here is basically free it's kinda like a scholarship. They only take 26 students per year at Visual Communication.

    i relate to a lot of that. i was at ryerson (fashion design) for 4 years, i got like half my credits. i have depression and it was so bad there, i struggled to do the work, especially when i found it irrelevant to my future career and my interests. i kept trying to push through but it got to a point where the cons so obviously outweighed the pros. my parents have been great the whole time. i'm actually thinking about applying to transfer to parsons paris but i want to avoid having the same problems so i'm researching and watching videos like this one. thanks for sharing.

    Very well done. You explained why it didn't work for YOU, so others can this under advisement to decide if it applies to them. We're now in the process of helping our daughter find the right school.
    My experience almost 40 years ago was choosing a school, I thought I'd love, because it was in the middle of nowhere. I liked that i could see the stars, even saw the aurora borealis once. Unfortunately what I didn't realize was because of it's isolation there was only one activity on campus, drinking. The kids there had no interest in having interesting discussions, in social change, in the environment..... Frankly they were exactly like the sheltered suburban white kids I went to HS with. So i transferred to a school in DC, where the students were very different. I don't prefer cities, but had enough experience with them to slide in easily. I had a much much better experience finding my people. So yes, if your first year feels like a mistake, don't hesitate to start looking elsewhere.

    well, first thing is parsons is not really a "college". you're there for one reason: to be a designer. MOST WHO ATTEND ARE FOOLING THEMSELVES. they're not going to work in creative fields, they won't be able to pay back their loans and the majority of students won't even graduate. most of those who do graduate still WILL NOT find a job. but make no mistake, those who have what it takes will be successful. parsons turns out some of the finest designers in the world. it doesn't mean that everyone who goes there will be one of them. anyway, if you're looking for a college atmosphere parsons isn't it. and another thing: the first year is meant to thin the herd. the remainder of the BFA program is more focused on your major and not at all as horrible. actually i was afraid parsons was making it easier on students after dropping what used to be called foundation year. i'm happy to hear they're still making first year miserable. they're still doing their job. if you couldn't make it through first year you won't be able to work in a professional environment with real deadlines. move on and find something else. but also understand there is no community college or state school or university turning out designers. i had a department of designers working under me and they all came from parsons. not FIT. not SVA, not pratt or RISD. please realize, you didn't fail. you just won't be a designer. you'll find your niche along the way. good luck.

    • @reedingbook
      @reedingbook  4 года назад +12

      yeah, i never wanted to be a “designer” in the first place. i wouldn’t say not liking the first year meant i can’t make deadlines however, because i was on the deans list and made straight As. it just wasn’t the right environment for me personally. i am studying film now, writing scripts and making deadlines. it’s all about making sure you are pursuing your passion and working hard for that. i wasn’t passionate about what i was being taught or my major there which made it very hard for me to enjoy the school. but i’m happy now and would say i have found my niche
