It was two years hence since that "Super Clash" and predictably China and Indonesia met for the first time in the Thomas Cup and they faced each other in the 1982 Thomas Cup final at the Royal Albert Hall in London. Indonesia had led China 3-1 in the first day ties but Chen Chang Jie who was the husband of All England champion Zhang Ai Ling then beat Luis Ponggoh to narrow the score to 3-2. As every badminton fan had been waiting for Liem Swie King and Han Jian rose to the occasion and gave a feast of scintillating badminton.It was badminton at its best with Han Jian prevailing in the rubber. Then it was Rudy Hartono and Luan Jin squaring of with each other in the reversed singles and Luan Jin roamed home in the rubber 15-7. And history was being created at the Royal Albert Hall when Yao Zhi Ming and Sun Zhian blew apart Rudy Heryanto and Eddy Kartono in the deciding set to win 15-1. For the first time Indonesia had tasted defeat in the Thomas Cup.The last time was in June 1967 when Rudy Hartono was only the surviving member of that team that lost the Thomas Cup by default 6-3 to Malaysia.For twelve years Indonesia ruled the roost and were the Thomas Cup kingpins.But China ended that golden reign in May 1982.
