The late Erland Kops record of seven All England men's title fell when Rudy Hartono bettered that at the 66th All England badminton championships at the Wembley Arena. Hartono then twenty six achieved an All England record of eight titles which still stands today. There may have been pretenders to his All England record like Denmark's Morten Frost Hansen,Malaysia's Lee Chong Wei and China's twice Olympic gold medallists of the modern era. But even Lin Dan's six All England titles was just two short of the eight achieved by Hartono. We may go on arguing who is the greatest player in the annual All England badminton championships but we have to take cognizance of the fact that Rudy Hartono's record eighth All England titles was achieved in the old era of wooden framed racquet or before the advent of professionalism in the sport in 1980. When Hartono was featuring in his eleventh and last All England appearance in 1981 the shuttle game was in its early infant stages of professionalism. But really Rudy Hartono belonged to the old era of amatuerism in badminton. There was no prizes being offered in the All England. When Rudy Hartono beat his compatriot the young emerging twenty year old star Liem Swie King 15-7,15-7 to create history as the first and only man to claim eight All England men's singles title it was feat that is unlikely to be equalled.Only the late Erland Kops of seventh All England titles came closed but Kops triumphs were achieved in broken sequence years from 1958 to 1967.Two of his triumphs were achieved against Malaysia's Tan Aik Huang in 1965 and 1967 when he was into his thirties. Against this Rudy Hartono's record of eighth All England wins is indeed remarkable as six of his titles were won in straight sets when the old format of fifteen points was adopted. What is remarkable is that only in the 1974 finals, for the first time he was taken to three games by Denmark's Elo Hansen in the quarter finals before prevailing 15-11,13-15 and 15-3.Then in the semifinals he was again taken to three sets before winning 11-15,18-16 and 15-6 against Sweden's Sture Johanssen. Then in the final the hard hitting Malaysian Punch Gunalan it was a three setter with Hartono claiming his seventh All England title winning 8-15,15-9,15-10. And in the 65th All England in 1975 Hartono's record of not having lost an All England match was ended by the late Svend Pri in the final.Pri won 15-11,17-14. Thus Hartono's feat of not having lost an All England match since his debut match with England's Paul Whetnall on 19 March 1968 to his semifinal 15-8,15-6 in the 1975 All England came to an end.But took fourty matches to end that record and Pri did it.Pri before that was beaten four times by Hartono in the All England including two All England finals in 1970.In the two All England finals Pri was outclassed 15-7,15-1 in the 1970 and 15-9,15-4 in the 1972 finals respectively. The other two were in the semifinals of the 1968 All England semifinals Hartono winning 15-9,12-15 and 15-9 and in the quarter finals of the 1971 All England Hartono winning 15-3,15-10. It would be worthwhile recalling Rudy Hartono's exploits and achievements in the All England badminton championships. (1)All the six finals with Tan Aik Huang,Darmadi,Svend Pri,Muljadi and Pri again were won in straight sets. The easiest being the 15-1,15-3 win over fellow countryman Darmadi in the 1969 final. Then what about the 15-4,15-2 1973 final thrashing he handed out to his brother in law Christian Hadinata? (2)For the first time in the 1970 All England semifinals Hartono was forced to deuce before prevailing 18-17,17-14 against Japan's Ippei Kojima. (3)In the 64th edition of the 1974 All England for the first time Hartono lost a set. This happened against the Dane Elo Hansen in the quarter finals.Hartono won 15-11,13-15 and 15-3.Well Sweden's Sture Johanssen could well have been the first player to beat Hartono but in the end Hartono won 11-15,18-16 and 15-6.And for the first time he was stretched to three sets by Malaysia's Punch Gunalan before winning 8-15,15-9,15-10.It was his seventh All England title and equalled Erland Kops record of also seven titles. (4)In the 65th edition of the All England Hartono's record of not having lost a match was ended by Svend Pri who won the final 15-11,17-14.It came after a remarkable sequence of thirty nine consecutive wins. That defeat to Pri came in his 40th match. (5)Hartono did not participate in the 1977,1979 and 1980 series. In between he reached the 1978 final only to be denied his ninth All England title losing to compatriot Liem Swie King 15-10,15-3.It was his penultimate All England appearance but with one more to go. (6)Claim his eighth All England title with an emphatic 15-7,15-7 win over compatriot Liem Swie King thus bettering the record of the late Erland Kops seven All England titles. It was Hartono's eighth and last All England triumph. (7)In the 1981 All England he made his farewell All England appearance which was his eleventh. He was ousted in the semifinals by India's Prakash Padukone losing 10-15,15-7,15-8. (8)All in all it was a remarkable All England record and Hartono's feat remains forever in the annals of the All England Badminton Championships.Overall his record Played 54 Won 51 and Lost .Those three defeats were to Pri,Swie King and Prakash. From 23-3-68 to 28-3-1975 his record was before his defeat to Pri was Played 40 Win 39 and lost 1.Indeed another remarkable record to boot.

It is incredible how badminton evolves over the years. The game is so slow that it feel almost like ametuers are playing, but they are the best of the their times. If you watch Momota vs Ginting that just played recently, the game is so much faster. A few points I noticed, both players do not have hip twisting motion when smashing, this is very important to bring power to smashes. Also, there are no dives, a few drop shot can be saved if any of them can dive down and quickly recovers. But again these techniques are not fully developed until 90s. Equipments also changed drastically over the years, racquets are lighter and more flexible, court floor are rubber rather than wood. It is amazing to see games could change so much in 40 years.
So I’m not too good with badminton history but at this were there a challenge? Also what racket are they using? Those tension looks like 10 or like 15 some where around there by the sound of it and what are the strings at that time? And what brand are the rackets?
Dear admin of AllEnglandBadminton, please upload the record of the match of Finale All England 1978 between Liem Swie King and Rudy Hartono, which is called one of the best match this century
Excellent video quality!! Keep posting the old era of badminton match! Btw to compare with new era, old era match looks like slow mo..and also wonder how much their string tensions..sounded like 23-24lbs lol 😂 😂
old days string used animal skin so the sounds not very good but the quality are much higher than today string. They're raquet mostly above 100g since it made from steel
and also the speed is not as fast by today mostly because of the quality of the footwork and the shots. You hardly ever see they lifting wide. The footwork is perfect its hard to see both of this players outnumbered they're opponent in footwork. Grest players always make it look easy

This was the eighth and last of the legendary Rudy Hartono's All England men's singles title triumph a feat that is unlikely to be equalled or bettered. For Hartono that 1976 All England triumph was some sort of a retribution for his painful straight sets defeat to Denmark's the late Svend Pri in the previous final the year before. His opponent in the final whom Hartono conquered easily in straight sets 15-6,15-6 was the 20 year old Liem Swie King who would win the All England men's singles thrice in 1978,1979 and 1981. Swie King was just about to emerge from Hartono's shadow and together with Hartono would play a pivotal role in Indonesia's third successive Thomas Cup triumph at Bangkok a few months later trouncing Malaysia 9-0 in the final.

It was Hartono's eighth and last All England
triumph.
How the players dressed up,
how quiet the spectators were,
how softly the commentators spoke,
how they were arranged with chairs for sitting (during breaks) like tennis events,
how polite the players at the end of the match,
how they were presented the trophies without a podium,
# Badminton back then was a PRESTIGIOUS EVENT. #
From the sound, I can say the string tension was around 10-15 pound only. Differ to 32-35 pound as LCW and Lin Dan used nowadays.
nope it just means it has a poorer sound quality compared to modern videos
Lol hahah 10
@@mohamadfirdaus257 ikr ahahaha
My guess is maybe string tension around 20-25, below than that the shuttle might stucked to the racquet lol
@@mohamadfirdaus257 im pretty sure it's just the sound quality

wow.....76 ??? both of the them indonesian ...amazing. nice to see the video...
It’s just so leisure from now to watch

Duo Legend
Looking back the game have vastly improved over the years.
It proves that we have a come a long way since. Good quality though.
Now days racket, string n stringing technic improved a lots. Those are the most improvement as well as tennis too.
Thanks for publik England.

They are legends! 🇮🇩💙❤
