Great part two Sven, look's like there was a lot more activity for day 2. The fish tacos looked pretty good, I agree that fresh fish makes the best food. Thanks for sharing and Merry Christmas too Sven.
Yeah there were definitely a lot more catches for day 2, the bite in the morning was just really good, Pier Life caught way more fish than I filmed haha, even if they were a bunch of Blacksmiths 😂 I really like coast guard jetty, I just wish the rocks and the kelp weren’t so snagged here haha. Thanks for watching and Merry Christmas to you too John! 👌🎣
Thanks again Sven! I'll let you know how I do there in a couple of weeks. I wouldn't had thought to use squid there, but it works! Happy holidays brother.
Thank you Doug! It was actually a lot of fun to edit because it was all over the place without a designated intro lolol, but the chaos of the process was oddly enjoyable haha 😂. Merry Christmas to you and your family as well Doug! 👌🎣
Happy Holidays! Great video as always! Next time you go you should try to use swimbaits there, its what I mainly use for rockfish there. I usually get a lot less bites but the fish are always a lot bigger (my PB Kelp Rockfish was on a swimbait there -16”) you should try it!! 2 just a little fyi all the tiny rockfish there at the pier are baby blue rockfish. I have never caught a black from there
I just learnt the difference between a black and a blue yesterday 😂 while I was fishing with Sven in this video, I couldn’t differentiate between rockfish names
Thank you Mr. Fish c: I was actually talking to Pier Life about how we should try swim baits and maybe have just 1 bait and wait setup to fish passively. Maybe not at Coast Guard Jetty because it’s snags for days if you don’t pay attention but we definitely think it would be fun to land a rockfish on a swimbait. I’m thinking maybe I’ll try a Texas rig or the good ole drop shot. You know me, I’m a bait and wait guy but I definitely wanna see what we’ll chase swim baits haha 😂. Also thanks for the clarification, I’ve caught my fair share of baby blue rockfish before but I still always get them confused lolol. Small hint for next video, Pier Life ends up catching a rly nice black rockfish c: happy holidays as well Mr. Fish, hope you have a great rest of your week! 👌🎣
It’s all good Pier Life, there’s alottttt of different rockfish for sure lolol, close enough to good enough for me, one thing I make sure to really know (and will still probably second guess myself) would be the rockfish you aren’t allowed to take ever like canary or yelloweye ones 👌🎣
@@SvenGoesFishing for swimbaits at the coast guard pier. I usually use a punching rig like what I use for bass fishing in thick pads and mats. Either a offset worm hook or a punching hook works good. I use a 1/2 weight on really flat days, 3/4 85% of the time and in rough days i will go 1oz or heavier. I use Fat Swing Impact Keitechs in either blueback herring or french pearl. Off the rocks where there are bigger fish I use big hammer swimbaits usually 4 or 5”. If you are fishing in kelp punch it through, let it sink to bottom and slowly jig it up. right when its about to get to the top open your bail and freespool it back down to the bottom. I get more than 1/3 of my bites on the fall. Goodluck!
Dang, that fish taco looks so delicious! I love the effort into these videos with the subtitles and fish identification. Looking forward to more fishing videos.
Thank you for your kind words Ryan! 😁 I like to think it helps potential beginners get familiar with the species of fish and recognize them when they go fishing c: It can be tedious sometimes but its worth the effort :D It also helps me remember the fish if I keep I constantly refresh myself on the species haha 😂. More fishing videos coming out soon, I still have 2 more Monterey videos from my trip 👌🎣
I also took your advice and tried bait and wait at a jetty but man they just kept taking my bait lol. Also realized Im more of an ADHD angler so I have to be constantly casting and reeling. Much respect on ur patience lol
Trust me, I’m an ADHD angler too 😂 I just taught myself to be patient, usually only works with fishing though haha. My philosophy for fishing is that if you bait and wait, don’t treat it as fishing; treat it as a way to just get out and enjoy some fresh air and scenery while also clearing your mind. If you catch a fish then it’s an added bonus but it does help lolol. I have yet to still successfully use lures and jigs, but I’ll get to that eventually, definitely want to try some nice swimbaits in Monterey when I get the chance to go back up there 👌🎣
I'm from the mid-west and I'm planning to fish there for the first time next week. Are you using a drop shot rig? What lb. line test and hook are you using? Thanks!
For Coast Guard Jetty, I was using a high low rig with 2 size 6 hooks with shrimp and squid. Drop shot will work here if you’re going exclusively for fish that go for swimbaits, I like to target surfperch more than anything so I normally use size 6 hooks haha. I’m using 40lb braid because there’s a lot of rocks and kelp (the stronger the line, the higher chance of getting out of the kelp if you accidentally snag it). Shrimp and squid both good baits here if you do wanna go the bait and wait route, I recommend a long sturdy rod for better reach and a step stool for easier casting and reeling above the rocks (the fence is kinda in the way too lol). Let minnow if you have any other questions, welcome and thanks for watching Andy from the mid-west :D👌🎣
@@SvenGoesFishing thanks for the tips! I haven’t used a high low rig over here before, but I’ll give it a try. For your high low rig, are you using a mono or fluoro leader or are you just using straight braid? What lb. line test is on the leader? Thanks again Sven!
If you’re gonna be fishing around a lot of sharp rocks and such, I would recommend a mono leader to have some abrasive resistant. I just like to use 40lb straight braid regardless of where I’m fishing with this setup haha. You will do fine with a 20lb mono leader but you can also up it to 30lb if you want more strength c: for the high low rig, I guesstimate while I’m tying it but 1 foot apart per hook is usually good, from the bottom hook to the weight, the length is up to you but just try to make sure it’s not too close because it could tangle 👍
Sorry about that Jose 😂 most of my trips are usually backlogged on my list of stuff to edit and I’m not a Monterey local unfortunately. The Monterey videos (pt 1 and 2, as well as 2 other ones that will come out eventually) were from a trip about a month or so ago; I also usually take a long time to edit (in-between work and fine combing footage) so the video release dates could be weeks from when I actually went. Also dude that’s freaking crazy! I bet that 15 inch perch fought hard :D haven’t caught one that big yet but I know the 11 inchers fight rly nice so 15 probably took some drag haha. Thanks for watching and sharing! 👌🎣
Gracias Pesca en California 503 c:, en qué área de California estás? También estoy en SoCal, pero me gusta viajar para pescar, especialmente en Monterey :D
It really is Bryan, I really like fishing coast guard a lot haha, I hear other anglers tell me they’ve caught massive rockfish there before like 16 inchers, have yet to catch one that big but the possibility is there and I’ll definitely fish there again when I get the chance c: 👌🎣
Hi Jake, if you're referring to the first Blacksmith that Pier Life Fisherman caught, those extra hooks were from a rig that got snagged in the rocks. They were pretty rusty when he snagged into it so I'm not sure how long they've been in the water but if you're referring to another part, I'll go ahead and tell him anyways. Always good to remind others about fishing regulations just in case :D Thanks for watching! 🎣👌
Man nice catches and the taco looks awesome! I was reading the rockfish section in the regulation pdf and that thing is confusing lmao. Have you ever tried them? Edit: just realized you kept 1 of the rockfish as well :p. There are so many types of rockfish i don't think i can identify them correctly.
Yeah the fish tacos were super good, you really can’t beat the taste of fresh fish (which ofc you know too since your catch and cooks are always super professionally made haha). Rockfish are awesome for almost anything, and don’t worry I still have trouble identifying rockfish as well, black and blues or grass and kelp rockfish confuse me, I like to aim for close enough while I’m out fishing 😂. Just make sure to familiarize yourself with the for sure no keep ones, like the canary or yelloweye c: 👌🎣
That day was really fun! The blacksmiths gave out a good fight and the rockfish too!
Very fun day of fishing, ended it with some great fish tacos too c: next videos gonna be even more fun and crazy haha 😂
Yeah the fish tacos were super good, I’m editing mine lol, I’m currently extracting it from my GoPro😂
Heck yeah, let’s see that back to back blacksmith lightning round lolol 👌🎣

Another great video Sven, Thanks for sharing it. Merry Christmas to you and your family!
