You're on pause at the moment because I needed to comment now. I truly enjoy your heart-to-hearts. You have such a lovely way of sharing those challenges that affect us all, but we somehow think we're the only ones experiencing them. You talk us through your process and I'm on this side of the world thinking we have so much in common! I'm sure many here feel the same. Isn't it amazing that the human experience, specifically the female experience, because I am a woman and can speak to that, is so similar no matter where we live?! Thank you, Sarah, for sharing. Until the next episode.

I really enjoy your podcast. Its cute how you struggle with English. Yes we have picnics on blankets or at tables. We do have flea markets too. Thank you for your humor. We also celebrate veterans day. We remember all our soldiers who fought for our freedom.
I enjoy your talented knits. Im a grandmother of 13. I play, cook, camp, play games, with them. Yet find time to knit for them too.

(From Canada.) The scalloped border on your beautiful afghan might be called a saw-tooth edge -- that description is after the sharp pointed edge of a wood saw. And it is very distinctive and perfect for your blanket, just beautiful, the perfect detail!

We definitely call it a flea market. Picnic blanket shopping sounds fun! Every crochet episode I’ve watched either includes all the different terms like u just did, or they say right upfront, “I’m just going to speak in US or UK terms.” It just makes me so happy and full of joy to catch up with you each week! ❤

    Hi Sarah.
If you think of how many times you put your hook through loops it helps to explain English terms.
Single is a chain stitch…. Once through with your hook.
Then twice through is a double crochet.
Thrice through is a treble. Etcetera.😁

Hi Sarah. Thank you for a lovely podcast. Your bed throw is amazing, it looks so evenly made. We do say 'flea market' and that is correct to say. Vacuum cleaners/ing are also correct to say, and it can also be used as a verb - to vacuum. I love your growing confidence and your obvious enjoyment in your handiwork adventures. Much love 😍💖😍

Sarah l'm watching from Greece l agree with everything you said in the video especially cleaning the house so what l do is crochet for an hour then for example l cook then go back to crocheting then again do another chore and so on. Crocheting relaxes me. I don't make any money from it l crochet for my grown up children my grandchildren and friends for their birthdays as gifts. In summer l crochet less because l enjoy the calm Mediterranean sea. Don't worry about your English we understand you and we're not all English. Different nations make up our European continent. Love your podcasts Sarah. I'm from the UK and agree with your comments about Crochet terms! I'm currently learning how to crochet (I'm a knitter) and am finding it difficult in these early stages. The UK terms are just not making sense to me either and that's coming from a British person. Maybe I shall just follow the US instructions :)

Dust sucker! 😂 I was laughing out loud. I have a green Henry vacuum cleaner. I think you have the pink one. I don’t know if it is just a scottish thing, but we would say “hoovering”. I think it goes way back to a time when just about everyone had a Hoover vacuum cleaner. I don’t know anyone who says vacuuming, even although there are so many more brands of vacuum cleaners available today. The term “hoovering” has stuck and become part of our language. I still call it the Hoover. “I’m going to get the hoover out and do the hoovering” 😂 I do enjoy your stories about your life, and look forward to your chats. 🤎

Yeah flea markets or antique markets or second hand bazar. 🙂 In Germany we call them Flohmarkt, Antikmarkt or Second Hand Bazar. 🙂 A lot of german words are the same as dutch words.
I used to have a great aunt who was married to a dutch man. They lived in Maastricht and they met during WW2. Their love story was very exciting, special and brave. My great uncle`s name was Anton. He was such a jolly man. I loved him a lot and my aunt as well. She lived to be over 90 years old, but now both of them are gone. I remember her bringing sweets to us in Germany back in the day. I remember especially some chocolate sprinkles called Hagelslag, lol. 🙂
Love all your knits Sarah. I also love the Hinterland dresses. It is so funny to me, that an american woman used a german word to name her dress design. Lol. Hinterland means Back Land or outback. But in german it has a kind of "hillbilly" connotation. Haha.

@@itisasarah There is even more to it, because my greatuncle Anton was put into my grandmas house as a worker, like many dutch people who fled their land during the war. German household had to take in people for many years to live with them. My great aunt fell in love with him and they fled in the middle of the night, wearing multiple clothing on top of each other, because they could not carry many bags with them. They fled back to Holland, through forests and pastures, hiding in places which helped undercover . It was all very dangerous. Once they reached Holland they had a hard time getting a marriage licence, but in the end, all worked out and they got married and could stay. I can`t even imagine the fear they must`ve gone through and the excitement. An adventure of one of a kind. Huggs, Christina.

    That blanket is GORGEOUS!
I absolutely love your color selection and how beautifully you matched them, great job!
    It is perfection ♥️
Your English is very good but I understand what you mean, it’s a lot work thinking in a different language, English is my second language, when I first moved to the states it was a struggle because I would think every single word before speaking, now after many years primarily speaking English that is no longer an issue, the more you practice it the easier it gets.
My brother taught himself Dutch and can speak and write it perfectly, I envy how easy it is for him to learn different languages, he knows about 6 different ones.

Thanks so much for making my Monday 😃 I do the same thing as you do, I set a timer and clean house for 20 minutes and then sit down to knit or do something fun for 20 minutes. I work outside of the home and don't get much of either done during the week. On the weekend I want to just knit all the time, so I have to play a game with myself. I don't like to clean, but I like a clean house. Happy Monday and I will "see you" Friday.

the crochet foot runner for your In-laws bed is beautiful. I used to crochet way back when I was in my teens because, like you with crochet I had more success, knitting not so much. Now I almost always knit and do not embroider or crochet. Since watching your vlogs I decided I wanted to do more than knit so I think a scrappy crochet blanket may be started. And I love the embroidery tattoos on your cardigan and sweaters! I think I will have to do that as well! I loved this episode and I laughed at the dust-sucker too. I definitely feel the same way about clothes. When I feel really yucky about myself, for what ever reason - maybe I ate something that didn't agree with me, or had a grumpy day, when I put on my jeans and soft t-shirt with a soft sweater or my plaid shirt and cosy socks I feel like me. I dont care if it looks good, the clothes make me feel good.

Wow, the bed runner you made for your parents-in-law is stunning! Thank you for another joy-filled podcast! It was the perfect way to relax and crochet on my own blanket after my morning physiotherapy appointment. I’ve been dealing with some health challenges this year and the stress of balancing work and home life. Thank you for sharing about your everyday life and past challenges. My favorite pair of shoes when I was 4 was a pair of red t-strap Mary Jane’s and I still feel better when wearing Mary Janes. Although I’m only a crocheter, I made my first crochet sweater in 2019 and I’ve made so many since then. Although I may look old fashioned to the younger set, I’ve reached a point in my life where comfort and feeling good about making something I can wear means more to me than someone else’s opinion. You always look radiant in your handmade garments, by the way. Your bit about the vacuum or dust sucker reminded me of how I always say, “Our vacuum really sucks.”😂❤

I have only been crocheting for about 15 months so I did get confused about the US and U.K. terms! Then I watched a podcast and she explained that the U.K. term are used because when you do a double crochet (U.K.) before you pull the yarn through you have 2 loops in the hook hence double! When you treble crochet before you pull the yarn through the loops there are 3 stitches on the hook - hence treble !!
    That’s how I remember it !!!

Oh my, you had me laughing today with your English/Dutch words and English vrs American crochet terms. I live in Canada and most patterns that I have used (I am not much of a crocheter, so that is not many) use US terms. The bed runner that you made for your in-laws is beautiful. I am sure they will be delighted. Such a lovely tradition to carry on having dinner with your family each week. When we lived in our home town, we did the same, alternating between the parents. As our children grew and moved out, we continued the tradition with a family Sunday dinner. Then the grandkids joined us. Now I live alone and my kids and grandkids live all over Canada and even in the US, so no more family dinners each week. I miss them, but when the kids do come home, they often request their favourite traditional Sunday dinner- usually roast beef and Yorkshire pudding.

I am from South Africa, and I can agree growing up bilingual [and also multilingual here in SA] has many benefits! I feel blessed and it connects us to a worldwide community, isn't it? As Afrikaans developed from Dutch it is so nice to hear so many words you say in Dutch while looking for the English words.

The crochet project is looking very pretty, I like the soft colors you selected, without being pastel. Flea Market is a general term for outdoor temporary sales, but often they are commercial vendors. The terms Swap Meets or Rummage Sale are subtly different in my area, as they are used for non-commercial vendor events like those for churches, schools or general community sales.

    Hi Sarah,
In English we use past tense words such as sewn, knit and cast. Sometimes English speakers make mistakes in this regard. I’m enjoying hearing the Dutch translations! I must go and use my duster sucker (vacuum cleaner) to suck up the ‘dust bunnies’.

Oh Sarah I think you’re so funny. The dust sucker is called a vacuum cleaner. From now on I’m calling it dust sucked😂 The crochet blanket is so pretty. Your In Laws will love it. I made my mother in law a quilt but she won’t use it because she doesn’t want to ruin it. So I guess when she passes I’ll have a new quilt.

Hi Sarah, lovely episode. In New Zealand we say vacuum, vacuuming vacuum cleaning…. We also have flea markets. And YES as a new crocheter I find the difference between uk and us terms confusing too! Being a commonwealth country we tend to follow UK in most things though. I would love to know the history of the terms haha

I also wonder why there are different crochet terms; it seems really silly😁. When I first joined Ravelry, I was only a crocheter, and I picked a pattern from a German company not realizing it used UK terms. It took several inches of crochet and wondering why it didn't look like the picture before I figured it out.

Hi Sarah! When you were talking about granny square blankets, I thought of the word “nostalgic” which is very similar to the Dutch word that has the same meaning. They are so comforting 💕 and reassuring. I’m hoping to make my first one this year! Thank you for keeping me company while I do the ribbing on my Amy Slipover.

You can also say hoovering up instead of vacuuming, it's a little easier
we use that term in the UK or at least in the North West we do

Hi Sarah, my theory re US vs UK terms is: UK terms are based on how many loops you have on your hook, so for a double - two, treble - three etc. My theory is that US terms are based on how many times you wrap your yarn round the hook in the set -up stages. So, if you think of crochet stitches in two stages, I mean when you are determining the height of the stitch, not the 'resolution' stage. Maybe this only makes sense in my head 😂

Your English is fantastic compared to my Flemish or Dutch which is 1%, I have 3 half-sisters that are much younger than I ( about 20 years difference ) I last spoke to them a good few years ago, I'd only ever spoken too them on the phone, one day I'd love to go over to Belgium to meet them properly but I'd like to be able to speak a little more Flemish before hand

Sarah the crochet blanket for your In-Laws is Beautiful. I haven't done much crocheting, but just a tiny bit. I would love to make the Ariana cardigan like you did, but not sure I can follow a crochet pattern. I follow if there is a tutorial from start to finish. I read on some of the comments from that cardigan that it was hard to follow putting it together. I am anxious to see what the crochet sweater you are wanting to make when it comes out in May. Maybe someday I will try it.

I don't have children but I think you're totally right to say it's a heavy combination to work and be a mom at the same time. Here in Canada, it's the same. People have careers and children, they work all day, go to the appointments, care for the kids at night, then they go to bed because they get up early, during weekends they have activities and so on. I honestly don't know how people can live like that. It's not a surprise that there are so many psychological problems related to well-being. Unfortunately, society defines us by our job, which is ridiculous in my opinion. One parent should totally stay at home. It should be seen as something good and healthy, and even as the normal thing to do, instead of being seen as "that person doesn't work".
I love your idea of alternating 15 minutes of cleaning with 15 minutes of crafting. I think I'll try that!

Sarah your english is fabulous don't worry about it just keep talking.........how do you join your squares together do you slip stitch them or use a different method? ♥ I have granny squares on the go as well I am trying to figure out what colors I want for a sweater like yours in episode 37 plus I am crochet a sweater (linen or moss stitch) and practicing my continental knitting by making a turquoise scarf. The knitting hurts my shoulder though so I can't work on it for long and its just guarder stitch.
