So well said. I have been shouting from the rooftops ever since i heard them for the first time in 1970.. I love The Carpenters. Karen, GOAT!!!!!!❤❤❤❤❤❤
@dennis2966 Are you sure “lasting behind” is what YOU meant to type? Because you misquoted the person, who used a different phrase - and used it correctly. Learn to read and write.
With Bacharach”s music, Hal David lyric, Richard”s arrangement, and Karen’s voice, this song never fails to move me. One of 20th Century”s best. Thanks!!!!
It pleases me so much to see a young person such as yourself enjoying this beautiful voice from so long ago. As you said, Karen is top tier, one of the greatest female vocalists ever.
This was the song that launched the Carpenters. It still sounds as good today as it did in 1970. She probably had the most beautiful voice ever. It is too bad we lost her at such a young age. I’ve been a Carpenters fan since the first time I heard this song. I still love their music. Her VOICE and Richard’s arrangements and song choices, that really showcased Karen; Genius.
Here’s a Karen Carpenter story. At some point in the early 70’s when I was 4 or 5 The Carpenters were playing at Hershey Park in Pennsylvania at the same time that my family was visiting the park. We were one of the first ones through the gate and we went to get breakfast. We got a table quickly as there was only one other party seated. Nobody else came in for a little while and my mom let me walk around a little, and I guess I was hungry cause I went to the other table and asked if I could have some toast. And that’s how I met Karen Carpenter and the whole band. She gave me a piece of toast when my mom came over kind of panicky to take me back and apologize for me bothering them, but they were super nice and took a picture with us. I was really young and don’t remember much from that day but I’ve heard the story every time someone asked about the picture.
Not on this recording, but I hear ya. She was certainly capable of singing and drumming at the same time, but Hal Blaine played the drums on this and many other tracks on this album…
I remember when this song was first played on the radio, I couldn't wait to go out and buy the sheet music, so that I could learn how to play it on my piano. After a while, I had it memorized, and my Mom loved to hear me play it.
Funny that you mention your mom. I was 13 years old in 1970, the first time I heard this song on my mom's kitchen radio. I didn't catch the name of the group as the DJ announced it and the song title was too long to remember. "They Long to be Close to You". Until this day, I recall being mesmerized by the voice and sounds coming out of the radio. It was magical. The Carpenters arrived when the country was going through difficult times. MLK Jr. and Bobby Kennedy had been killed in 1968. The Vietnam War was going on. There were riots in Chicago and in May, 1970 was the shooting at Kent State University. Out of this turbulent period the Carpenters came onto the scene, and Karen Carpenters voice was like a gift that captivated us. Thank you for remembering the gift of Karen's voice and Richard's musical arrangements more than 53 years since I first heard this song.
Why do birds suddenly appear, everytime..... Those lyrics are so wonderful, the Burt Bachach harmonies are awesome, and this song was the most iconic of the Carpenters and Karen was amazing here, her voice was so so beautiful, each time after so much decades I got a shiver, when listening to this song !
mine as well, always has been, always will be. While I love countless solo artists, groups, different genres of music, different eras, Karen Carpenter will always be "it" for me.
Haha you do love "That voice". You have made that point many times as it is well deserved. I grew up in the 70's and their music was all over the radio back then, even A.M. radio. You have a great visit with your mom. My mom passed years ago ut I would do anything to talk to her again even for just 10 minutes, you are a blessing, Angela. Now go play in the snow. HAHAA
Needed a bit of joy this Friday evening so I watched this video again. I am caught between warm smiles and tears. Thank you for this reaction. Why weren't you alive and around when I was a teenager? I wish I could make you see and feel just how validating this reaction is. May God richly bless you, Angela! Chuck in NC
Their first number one hit...this song sold the Carpenters to the World in the summer of 1970 ...she was only 20. I had a crush on her at age 14, before I ever even saw what she looked like. Miss you Karen. My heart is still breaking....
Thanks for returning back to the Carpenters. Yes, HER VOICE says is all. I have recommended in the past Ticket To Ride. This song gives an early look at how mature her voice was and instinctive her ability was to express emotions.
The Carpenters became famous around 1969 and all of us fell in love with Karen Carpenter's incredible voice. When she passed away, I and millions of other people were shocked and saddened. Years ago an acquaintance told me that every year at Christmas, her family listens to The Carpenters Christmas Album. I will always have a place in my heart for Karen Carpenter.
This was the first Carpenters song released in the UK and was a top ten hit and introduced us to the great and unique voice of Karen Carpenter. I think this one was given to them by Herb Alpert of A and M records, written by Burt Bacarach with great arrangement by her brother. Great choice-Colin Ward
Thank you for playing this, my fellow Carpenters lover. Karen's lovely, delicate, divine voice and Richard's keyboards and arrangements take me away. My all time favs! Thanks Angela. The lip-syncing was great!
Thank you so much for sharing what I feel is the best pure voice in music history alive. Karen and her family grew up in the same area of California where I was raised. Losing her at a time where the world did not understand how an eating issue could lead to her early decline and death was terrible to watch. It is clear to see playing her music how much you enjoy the sound of her voice. It was heaven sent for sure. Thank you again.
I know that you knew this song as why you never didn't do a reaction video all those years ago when you started with Superstar but I'm glad you finally got around to it ❤❤❤ You still have to do a reaction to "LOVE ME FOR WHAT I AM" from the Carpenters as well 😊😊😊
Angela, you are an intelligent, charming, and beautiful young lady. I am thrilled that young people like you are discovering and sharing the magic of the Carpenters with new audiences. And yes, Karen's voice is top tier, inimitable, and timeless.
great singer even john lennon said she was the when he met her in the 70s love your channel you make my day everytime thank you angela from mike from england
Yes Indeed, HER VOICE, HER VOICE!! One of the purest, most beautiful voices ever! By the way, that trumpet you hear is the great Herb Alpert. He's the one who presented them the song. It had been covered by other artists including Dionne Warwick but achieved little commercial success. He felt that with Richard's arrangement and Karen's "once in a lifetime voice" it would be a success. He was so pleased with the end result he played it over the phone for Burt Bacharach who was very delighted. When it hit number one, Alpert sent a hand written note to Karen and Richard saying "We're No 1"...Congratulations + Love" He simply signed it "Herb" By the way, I have that album and still enjoy it. Loved the reaction!
First heard her sing this song when I was a sophomore in High School. Fell in love with her voice. This song made me dream of meeting my soul mate. Thank you Angela. ❤
Very nice reaction young lady. I remember seeing your reaction the first time you heard this. So heartwarming knowing young people are appreciating Carpenters timeless music. Hope you have a wonderful White Christmas filled with joy and some Carpenters Christmas Classics! THAT VOICE is a must this time of year. Rest In Peace little drummer girl.
Thank You Angela for all the memories, My Mum used to play The Carpenters in the house back in the late 1970's and early 80's. I LOVE KAREN!!!..... "HER VOICE"!!!!! You've pretty much played their very best and most well known songs, the only one missing for me personally is "There's A Kind of Hush", I love that one too. Thanks again.
This song didn't go anywhere for the longest time first recorded by Richard Chamberlain in 1961 and even by Dionne Warwick it wasn't until Richard Carpenter got a hold of it with his beautiful arrangement and Karen's voice that it soared to #1.
As a former sound technician I hear the best of the best in one room. The studio, equipment, the smartest people are all there to make the best song possible. Studio musicians, People that can write a score for the orchestra in record time all this surrounding the top performers of that era. Anyone would love to get into that vibe. They dream of working with successful musicians artists technicians the whole group.. This is corny but the all long to be close to them. When I talk to musicians or listen to chat the subject always comes around to who they’ve worked with amazing stories and what drives them. That song (and any carpenters songs are just outstanding. When you are the best, the best come to you. Herb Albert is in the trumpet (cofounder of A&M Records) he just comes by to see if there’s anything he can do. Did you bring your horn? Heck yeah
Richard and Karen Carpenter, what a brilliant combination, their musical influence in music history is ever present to this day! RIP beautiful Karen Carpenter, you will never be forgotten! 🙏🏾🎤💞💐💐💐💐💐
I'll never forget how you reacted to The Carpenters song Superstar a while ago! That's about the time I started watching your channel, and have been here since! We don't always agree on the music, but your positive attitude and disposition keeps me a loyal listener and viewer! Take care and have a great one!
Summer of '70---------I was 23 y/o,, heading to 24 in September. What a different time & different world. In those days, I could walk ANYWHERE in Denver, never fearing for my safety. Summer of 1970 - - between graduating from college and going into the service 6 weeks later. Heard this song about 100 times on the radio on a summer "road trip" to California with my brother. I always remember that when I hear this song. Thanks for bringing it back.

You drove me crazy, such a nice beautiful person , I wanted that dance! I was young again and you took me back to when they'd play close to you at the end of a disco, asking a girl for a slow dance. Glad you found Karens songs, they are special.
There are two kinds of people in the world, those who love the Carpenters and those who won't admit they love the Carpenters.
So well said. I have been shouting from the rooftops ever since i heard them for the first time in 1970.. I love The Carpenters. Karen, GOAT!!!!!!❤❤❤❤❤❤
HER VOICE HER VOICE HER VOICE!❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
So, so well said my friend.
I shout it from the rooftops. From St Paul's Cathedral, from the top of Notre Dame, I love and adore The Carpenters.
Well said, she opens her voice and butterflies and rainbows come out...
Our Karen. Gifted. Shy Fragile.
Godspeed for a voice that will never come again.
Rest in peace, Karen Carpenter. She left us far too soon, but left a lasting legacy behind with her music.
A "lasting behind"? Are you sure that's what you meant to type?
@@dennis2966 I understood it.

Best female singer ever..definitely the G.O.A.T...
Absolutely
There are several top female vocalists, and to put one as the goat just shows you haven't heard them all.
With Bacharach”s music, Hal David lyric, Richard”s arrangement, and Karen’s voice, this song never fails to move me. One of 20th Century”s best. Thanks!!!!

Karen Carpenter Wow !!!!!!!!! Nothing else needs to be said. Her VOICE !!!!!! Angela every song in their catalog is beautiful. Thank you again.
It's often said they don't make songs like that anymore....true indeed.
The most pure, rich, intimate, warm, movingly beautiful voice ever and of course a incredible storyteller....
The most beautiful voice, ever, I'm 66 years old, listening to a million women singing, but nobody comes near to Karin. Ijust simply love her.
Loved your reaction, your miming the song, you have the moves…thanks!
Nicely done, Angela! You win the lip sync contest hands down!! Your prize is a snowball fight so go get to it!!

HER VOICE!!!!!!! Agreed, it's amazing, very, very few can deliver this sense of warmth, character and near vocal perfection.

I like the way you let us listen WITH you and not make it all about you like others do
This is one of the most joyous reactions from any of the musical reaction channels. I was smiling and in tears at the same time, but that is the effect of Karen Carpenter.
I was a toddler when this song was popular. I was one of the younger children out of a family of 12. I thought the Carpenters knew me personally because I had blond ish hair and blue eyes and my older siblings used to sing this song to me.
Wonderful. Well done. Thank you for that.
