Wow, this video is so well done. Thank you Julia and your team for all the hard work you put in to show us these new lenses. Yasmin is so stunning, I love her styling and her presence in front of the camera. Your portrait examples sold me on this lens. I love the bokeh. I think I'll be getting it to substitute my GM35 when I occasionally need zooming.
Yeah, I can definitely seeing this being a street heavy lens. Both lenses have great image quality and solid performance, the differences will come down to your use case scenario. If you need more light, want more bokeh then the 2.8 is the way to go. If you don't shoot wide open or you prefer being able to zoom to 70 rather than just 50, then the f4 is a good option!
I'm impressed, & do like the softer look of this G lens compared to the GM sharpness, only negative is the bokeh full body shots. I'd love to see you try the Sigma 18-50mm F2.8 DC DN apsc lens on both apsc & full frame as this is the zoom im looking to add for both fashion/portrait work in stills & video too
How are you still liking the Tamron 20-40? I have the 28-75 Tamron G2 but I am seeing I would like a little more on the wider end, like 24mm. I have a 20mm prime from Sony but would like a zoom that gets a little wider than 28.
@Harvester88 I ended up getting the 24-50 but I haven't even sold my 20-40. That extra 4mm does make a difference. I like it a lot. The Sony is a hair sharper but you'd have to pixel peep. The smooth ring and weight of the 20-40 is just perfect. I'll hang on to both for a minute. As is always the case, if you want the best of the best go with Sony. Otherwise, if you want a solid 9/10 with the extra 4mm on the wide end then get the Tamron without any reservations.
You are a great speaker. For NYC street travel on A7cii or A7CR would you use either that and 85 1.8 or would you take Sony 24mm f/2.8 G, 40mm f/2.5 G or 35 2.8 with 85 1.8 with you, for street do you prefer ligher/smaller on camera or to switch lenses? Also would you wait for the A7V instead because the A7Cii sensor is a 2021 sensor left over from the A7IV?
Thank you so much for mentioning the the third party competition. Almost all other youtubers didn't even mention the third party options and that is really a shame! Kudos to you, i appreciate that a lot :)
With no Capture One support for this lens, have you tried correcting the lens distortion across the focal range, and if so, was the manual correction trouble free?
Thanks for the review For video, I like the smaller/lighter size of the lens and probably wouldn't be too concerned about losing a few millimeters on the wide end. Loved all the pictures with your model. No bad ones there.
Lovely photos, but I do ask the logic of producing this lens. Personally, I would only use such zoom range for cityscape photography, but the lens uas to be well corrected. Is this lens well corrected?
Well done Julia (and D!!) great snaps and tutorial on the performance side; I thought the Video capture was pretty good !; have you got any updated DJI Drone reviews coming up ? (Mini 4 Pro?)
It's a tough sell as a 24-70 GM II user. That lens is already lightweight as is and I don't have front heavy issues like I did the Mark I. However the fact that this lens is even lighter than the 35mm 1.4 GM is insane. You can probably mount this on a tiny gimbal for a low profile setup. Plus it can work well for Super 35 mode video as it's just a 35-75mm.
16-50 would have been stellar.. But no... Sonys weird focal length game, like the 16-25...25 has no reach. I just bought the a7cii and starting to regret it because I can't find an all in one lens like the apsc variant, 16-50mm.
Well, in some ways this is really an attractive new lens. Speaking as somehow who tends to like 35 and 50mm the most, this covers my mainly used focal lengths. For a user of a 7R body, additionally, having 24mm is very nice because you can use APS-C crop mode for 4K recording to get full pixel readout, effectively ending at a focal length of 36mm. What I really like about it is the minimum focus distance for 50mm. Most of the lenses I know are 40/45 cm + x, so having 50mm + f2.8 and a mfd of 30cm is quite a nice compromise for people who like to be able to expose subjects in close up shots a bit more without feeling any necessity for f1.4 or something alike. However, yet again, I have to say that I don't really consider its price to be reasonable. Especially looking at Tamron's very good 28-75, there is only size and weight which really favour this new Sony. In Europe, it's supposed to be sold at 1299€ which is the same as the 24-105 G and the latter isn't on par with that Tamron, too, but costs 500-600€ more. So in terms of "value for money" this would have been a lot more attractive if it was priced around 1050 or something. But as even the old Zeiss 24-70 f4 is still sold at above 700€, you can't really expect Sony to price anything reasonably. :D
How is sharpnest compared to sony fe 24mm 2.8, 40mm and 50mm f2.5? Do you prefer have 2 of mini primes or this one zoom lenses? Im thinking to get 2 of mini primes but this lens made me change my mind
50mm f2.5 is a superb small lens. Based on the samples in the video, seems 50mm has better bokeh. Not sure about sharpness and contrast, seems 50mm is still slightly better. However the convenience to use one lens for everything is a big plus when traveling.
So if I have a Sony and just want to take pictures of my kids and maybe get out and do some street photography and you could only have one lens what would it be? Likely I would have that one lens for a while until I could stomach shelling out for another one. I know I saw a video where you said 35mm. I’m still working with my Nikon D5300 and 35mm is what I use on that. Sometimes I miss the zoom option, but love the bokeh of the prime. I’m looking into the A7 line. I would love the A7iv but also prefer the tilt screen on the back which it doesn’t have. Looks like the A7V is bringing that back but don’t want to wait for the non-R A7V lol. Also I’m terrible about making decisions
The a75 won't even be rumored to exist for another 2 years so idk what you're talking about. Get a second hand a74 with the Tamron 35-150 if you're not a vlogger or the a6700 with the 18-100 or whatever it is and if you want 4k120
I don't have a gimbal review or video up on my channel since I mostly focus on photography related videos. But Dan and I have been using a gimbal for our travels, so I will probably talk a little bit more about it then!
Yeah, I prefer to buy new tamron 20-40 for less than half the price. 24-50mm focal lenght would suit me better but I don't find that pricing competitive at all.
Lol I just got the Tamron 20-40mm not long ago. And I really just wished it had a bit more reach like a 50mm and don't use 20mm often. And now this is out 😅
I did the same but I prefer 4mm in the wide end than 10mm in the long end. That lens would have been perfect of it was 20-50mm 2.8. I'll still hold to the tamron 20-40mm dearly.
Problem with 20-40 is harder to pair a wide angle lens with it. Do you get a 16-28 and have overlap, a prime but not be able to take filters (unless it’s viltrox 16mm but heavy). This 24-50 will pair nicely with their 16-25 2.5 G
that said, 20mm is very wide and should be enough for many (especially since most are happy with 24mm), and for video active stabilisation you end at around 22mm, which is perfect for vlogging to. its much easier to pack combine with a longer lens. 55 1.8 or 75, 85mm
Love this review. Thanks. I think you hit the nail on the head with one of your comments: IF you want to retain Sony colours, Sony lens quality and share filters....you can get this Sony lens and save €1000 compared to a 24-70 2.8 (which then lets you buy a Sony 20mm lens for €999 with the savings you make.) The 24-70 f2.8 GM is sometimes overkill (in price AND in weight) for certain photography jobs.
It's a pity that the review is for portrait use only (in fact, professional portrait photographers will always choose the 24-70mm), but it's more valuable than the numerous review channels that just trace the manufacturer's advertising. I think this lens is perfect for everyday family movies.
Considering this lens still costs over a £1000 in the UK, I honestly can't see the point in the lens. Maybe if they made it an f2.0 lens or something it might be worth it.
@juliatrotti Uh oh. I think you've given me a case of Gear Acquisition Syndrome (GAS)! Fortunately, I've been inoculated by my 24-70 GMII. ;-) Seriously though, you mentioned something really interesting about lens sharpness, and about some lenses being *too* sharp for portraits. I've been thinking about that quite a lot lately. I've been watching videos of cinema lenses, trying to figure out how films get the look that they do. Almost no cinema lenses are really sharp. They are soft, and intentionally so. So I've been thinking about whether I would want to shoot with some softer lenses sometimes. So far, I'm still really happy with my super sharp Sony lenses. But maybe at my next fun shoot, I'll use a softer lens just to experiment. Thanks as always for the amazing review. :)
Horrendous distortion (given such a small focal range that makes it even poorer), vignetting, Sony’s slower autofocus motor, sharpness just good. I feel this is really overpriced for what it is and it’ll only appear to those with GAS. They should have made this an F2 zoom at this focal range, stick a GM label on it, their faster focus motors and they could have sold it at whatever price they want and it would sell well.
Another clinical lens without any character, sharpness between g and gm is irrelevant. Sharpness from the worst lenses is almost irrelevant. 0 character from what I see, sharp and flat.
Love that your reviews are geared towards actual practical use. So much more useful than just pixel peeping!
this is the best review i have watch for the Sony lens 24-50 f2.8, Thanks Julia and keep going
This lens seems to be perfect for a light and really powerful travel kit in combination with the a7cII or a7cR.
My exact thought , better than carrying a big clunky 24-70
I really hate it extending.. I'd rather take my 35mm only and then use crop mode to get to 50. Megapixel count is enough on those small beasts.
the a7cii became sonys best seller camera and they absolutely had that in mind with this lens
Yep, I can see that being a really good pairing!
Dude this lens sucks I sold this to get the 24-70 I didn’t like the auto focus
How was she recording the camera live?

Seems like a nice Street lens, covering the key focal lengths. For me, the question is this lens vs Sony 20-70 F4? Pros and cons for both.

The model is very attractive. Your review has been very helpful. It's a shame it's not 20-50 as someone else commented.
How do you make your BTS on the left corner?
i am using 24-70 GM, is it worth to sell it and use 24-50G in terms of photo quality.

using primes vs zooms is a highly personal preference
The 20mm wide on Tamron 20-40 is more useful for gimbal work for me, at 50mm I prefer the F1.4 on that range. If Sony make it 20-50mm is more ideal.
