Hud is one of the greatest movies ever made, and easily my favorite Newman movie. He, Douglas, deWilde, and Neal are just brilliant in it !

He's as real as your brother or sister, is real, with all his
flaws, open and raw.. He's only begrudgingly
loyal to his family, friends...a good old boy, where love is not welcome.

Absolutely agree. Watching Hud repeatedly in preparation for a role. Just magnificent.

Melvyn Douglas was also pretty damn good in that film!! But then again the whole cast just melds into this cinematic masterpiece!!

I had a brother in law that lived in the south and was tall and lanky like Newman and he was just like HUD!

Schrader’s got a great point. Just looking at the script, Hud Bannon is an irredeemable selfish cold hearted bastard. But combine that with Paul Newman, who was undoubtedly a very handsome and charming man, and it’s an interesting dilemma for audiences in the early-60s production code era. They’re presented with a bad guy who won’t see the error of his ways, but he gets away with it because the audience still likes him.

HUD (1963) is my favorite Paul Newman movie. I think it's the only movie where he played a bad guy, a heel.

The ensemble cast in "Hud" is outstanding. James Wong Howe's photography can't be beat ... How this film has yet to receive a domestic Blu-ray is unforgivable. What we really need is a 4K remaster. We have an ancient DVD ... but this film needs to be introduced to new generations of film goers and film lovers.

The scene where Hud is berated by Homer with the "That's not our quarrel and never has been," followed by "No, boy, I was sick of you a long time before that" and "That's it, Hud,. That's the whole of it. You don't give a damn . . . ." It's just breathtaking. Irving Ravetch and his wife Harriet Frank captured sociopathy in one short soliloquy. And they also presaged the essence of today's society 60 years ahead of time.

Read Pauline Kael's Hud: Deep in the Divided Heart of Hollywood (I think I got the title right) in her book, I Lost It at the Movies.

Shrader didn't get it. Shrader still stuck on his current "machismo" tour.
Hud was clearly a villain. Paul Newman in an interview said he couldn't believe how many teens went up saying they had posters of Hud and looked up to him, and Paul smacked his head thinking these teens don't get it.
The REASON Hud's "coolness" was preserved in the film was because that was the point of the book. He was good looking and a smooth talker - a seductive evil, and got away with a lot, but he was a horrible influence on Lonnie, the impressionable teen. Young Lonnie still trying to find his way in life found himself torn between following Hud or following his grandfather, and as he matured, he realized his grandfather's ways were right. You build families and communities and a way of life out of the grandfather's words, not Hud's.
Hud in the book was racist and called their servant the "N-word bitch" all the time, looking down on women, using them, forcing himself on them, spitting them out, only thinking of his appetites w/ no plan in life. He was clearly not the path to follow.

I don’t think malevolent is the right term for Newman in this film. That’s the way men treated women back then.

His good looks helped of course, but human beings are basically evil, they enjoy watching evil on screen, that's why villains are so popular.

All human beings are a mixture of good & evil. And most of them have more good in them than evil.

    • @stever5359

I think humans are basically good. Watching someone who’s character is evil and remorseless is fascinating, even more so when it’s being played by Paul fucking Newman.
