A frustrating one we never really saw him ,get a strike on ovett ,Coe or cram , because he went up to 5,000 metres.but if he believed in himself more and making the right tactics at the right time. he would of been a match. but time and time again never stayed with the pace and to far behind. 1978 European showed his kick to get silver
Good, Lord, that has to be as fast a finish over the final 200 m that I've ever seen. Utterly astounding. EC was effectively unbeatable indoors and could run from the front, back or middle, off a slow or fast pace. Poor Steve Scott, a wonderful runner, could never catch a break: If it wasn't Coe, Ovett or Cram outdoors, it was Eamonn, Flynn and later, Marcus indoors.
Jeez what a finish by The Chairman. I actually spoke the words 'holy fuck' when he kicked to take the lead.. What a hero he was to Irish people everywhere ☘☘☘☘☘
There were'nt many faster finishers at 1500 than Eamon, but his tactics were his downfall!(I think he had two forth positions in the Olympics). But then he moved up to 5000 meters and and won GOLD at this distance at the World Championships! So he finally got his just desserts!! A fantastic runner, with a amazing turn of speed.. An true 🍀Irish thoroughbred!🍀.
@@bfc3057 He wasn't that much of a novice in 76, 4 years in the US college system, ran in Filbert Bayi's mile record race. He himself says that in the 76 1500 he badly F...ED up his pre race plan,(which was to sit on Walker and kick in the last 100 to 50 meters) but he panicked and took the lead too early. Walker was very smart and made it a strength race from 300 out, Van Damme was still very young(a contemporary of Ovetts) and Wellman was an experienced racer at his second Olympic games(and judging by his reaction when crossing the line a bit surprised to win the bronze). In the Moscow 5 k he was worn out because he picked up a gastro bug a week or so previously, so ran out of legs. All came right in the 83 world 5k final. I felt a bit sorry for Dimitryev in that final, to do all that work and miss out was tough.
@@bfc3057 Probably right about the post Moscow reflections, everyone tries to rationalise events in the rear view mirror, I remember Eamonn coming to New Zealand for several summer seasons racing in the time between 80 and 83, he always put the effort in for all his races there and beat some quality fields, (Walker, Dixon, Quax, Moorcroft, Pauonen, Ryffel, Millonig and a few lesser names). I trained with Walker a few times around One tree hill and Cornwall park around that time and one thing I will say is that he exuded raw power when he was running , quite intimidating for mere mortals.
@@bfc3057 I watched the same list some time ago and agree with your assessment of the producer. Always hard to compare eras and it gets very complicated with injuries and boycotts (Moscow) etc. My own opinion on the 80 1500 final all things being the same with Walker in the field I think he would have grabbed bronze, would not have got Coe but just possibly nabbed Straub for the silver.................BUT, we will never know! PS, Dixon for bronze in the 80 5 k final!
A very under appreciated athlete.

@@Kvbftng agree my friend. Sorry I took so long to respond to to you. What do you think of Philip Tracy?
@@PatKennedy-z1u , I saw him when I was small beat Steve ovett I can't remember the distance, because I so small but he did beat him in a sprint
The Maestro...the Chairman of the Boards...
The king coghlan!!!!!!!!

The only time he finished like that was the 1978 European 1500 m getting silver from moorcroft .
You hear the paddling on the boards, so real. What a chairman Eamon was, and still is ❤❤❤...go Irish.
World of sport itv use to show these meetings in the USA , what a underrated brilliant programme it was.
I often wonder how Coghlan would have done running on a 200 meter track as opposed to the smaller high banked tracks.
Jeez what a finish by The Chairman.

The indoor mile was great but very few world class athletes went in for it.
Nonsense
Yep only Scott, spivey, Flynn, and coughlin in that race. How many Olympic and world champ medals did those guys have?

Lol🎉🎉🎉🎉
What is the loud music for?
Too slow for Scott to win.
The band playing was incredibly annoying 🙄
Don’t be so grumpy
Fun part ❤...but maybe a bit 30s feel.
