This run was incredible in that he was 31 and bear in mind that he did it on an 10+ lap track... El G's WR 3:48.5 and later the Ethiopian Kejelcha WR 3:47.01 were run on a 200 m track.
Organizedc, I was also present for this race back in 1983 at age 14 with my brother - but up in the stands! What a day it was and what a treat to see it again (but first time on TV) after all these years. Coghlan was always a hero to me. Thanks for again for posting.
His best run ever and the best ever seen on one of these tiny tracks. The only guys to run faster indoors in 40 years since then ran on standard 200m tracks with faster surfaces. This is one of the greatest mile runs ever.
Coghlan is one of my favorite runners. The true strength it takes to hit the 200 meter boards like he did. Not having any fresh air to breathe like outdoors. Great to watch this still.
When I see this I think there is something sacred about running....when Eamonn throws his arms up in exhilaration at the end...full of joy to know he gave his all.
Doing the math that's an average speed of just over 15.7 miles an hour. It's hard to understand for us mortals how it's possible to maintain that speed over the course of a mile. Eamonn made it looks effortless. There was no wasted motion. His form was as near perfection as one can get.
Easy to be rude to the public, but as a modest talent I could have come in at half way and still been thrashed. Always looked at the guy as an incredible human being. Won the World Championship at 5,000m and not bead of sweat on his forehead or a hair out of place. He could churn it out with the best of them.

I always admired Eamonn as a runner in the 1970s when I was a schoolboy . He was superb and always one of the best . Stumbled on this by chance . Shocked to realise he is now nearly 60 years old . Where do the years go .
Such a class act. I had the thrill of meeting him once on the trails of the Rockefeller estate. I saw him and called out to him, and he ran and chatted with me for a few miles.
I miss those wooden indoor tracks. I remember watching this race live on television when I was in grade school. I recorded back then because vcr’s just came out and watched this race probably 100 times. I wish I could see a recording of when Coghlan broke indoors 2000 meters record.
Now that you mention it, I wonder how Coghlan would have done on the modern 200 meter synthetic indoor tracks as opposed to the shorter plywood tracks.
In the 5000 meter Olympic Final the leader an Ethopian Runner stepped out of the way and allowed the winner Miurts Yifter another Ethopian through on the inside from a very boxed position and that had a big bearing on the race because it left Yifter through past Coghlan on the inside
Yes, Steamin' E-man still the only one under 4:00 for age 40 and over. Looks like he'll have this distinction for a long time to come. I remember Marcus O'Sullivan recalling that Eamonn went through torture to accomplish this with physio sessions daily to get his aging body ready for the next day's training.

@AndrewOdom i would see Eamonn run at Villanova and the Penn Relays, and since this time have regularly cited him as my hero too. It´s not just his talent as a runner it´s his great attitude that makes him.
Coughlan was dominant indoors, but not outdoors. They called him Chairman of the Boards for all his wins in Madison Square Gardens on the small wooden indoor track.
@niall29 he was always outclassed by Walker, Coe and Ovett outdoors. He didn't have the pure speed over the last 300m. Still one of the greats though and even ran sub 4:00 at the age of 40!!!

whow what an athlete led for 800 meters and an Irish one, two. Where did the tradition of Irish indoor runners go like Coughlan, Flynn, O' Sullivan and runners like O'Mara, and O'Donavan they were the Golden days of Irish indoor athletics. There has been the odd athlete through like Sonia O' Sullivan and C. Mc Kiernan
Do your research -> No EPO in athletics in Coughlan's time period. El G had it though in the "golden EPO period" where it was abundant but where there was no test for it. Double bonus - performance and zero risk.

Eamonn Coglan: The Chairman of the Boards.
Happy to say I was there that night.
Good ☺️ for you sport,,, GOOD FOR YOU!!! FANTASTIC ☺️👍👍👌
Very cool. I have to say as a true blue track fan....you are a fortunate man.
This record lasted for 14 years, and is still the 2nd fastest of all time and is still, 25 years on, a European Record. LEGEND!
It lasted 39 yrs to the exact day and was just beaten by Josh Kerr.Amazing lenght of time for a record to last.

He was still running sub 4 min at age 41. Truly amazing human being
Those were the days
I remember watching this race live! Chairman of the boards!
I remember this race. I have this on VHS as well as a gang of races from the 80s and 90s. Need to transfer them onto dvd
I agree fully, there was no doubt about his tremendous talent.
This is an iconic race. Thank you! The Sub4 singlet is pure nostalgy. Not sure they're the beer drinking type though lol.

possibly. i didn't know he had set a world record. he'd cetratinly have run 2 or 3 seconds faster in 1999 or 2018.
Yes, HeG WR is 3.48. So Eamonn Coghlan would have run 1 to 3 seconds faster in the late 1990s. He could have beaten HeG at his best.
and apparently they allowed smoking inside to boot!
You stole my thunder, vd... El G and Kejelcha WR's were set on 8 laps ...
I was there that night as well as well as 32 consecutive Millrose Games. No one bought the emotion out of the fans like the Chairman of the boards.
Ran against Coughlan in a 10k road race back then,I said hello at the start, he said goodbye and that was that,Poetry in motion he was😂😂😂
Agreed. Eamonn often underachieved outdoors due to a lot of impatience on his part. He loved to race though.
Still the only man ever to do it!
I've just posted two videos of Eamonn to Google Video...

Fantastic video, do you have any other videos of irish runners, such as Sonia O'Sullivan or John Treacy?

Eamonn Coughlan broke 4:00 at the age of FORTY-ONE! (not 49, as I mistakenly commented before).
