    I ordered jars from that website last year. I recieved 6 jars with no name on them instead of 6 dozen. Luckily I paid with my PayPal account. I first contacted the website with no response I contacted PayPal. They got me my money back within just less than a week. I found out that it was really a company from China. So people please be careful. I was lucky because of using PayPal.

    We have buckets of wheat berries, corn, rice and oats that are perfectly fine after 22 years in storage. No bugs, no mildew, no spoilage, this with no mylar, no oxygen absorbers and no moisture absorbers aside from hand warmers. I think that storage conditions of buckets are far more important than any other factor. Cool, constant and dark, are the keys to long term. At this point though, SHTF isn't far away. I wouldn't even bother with all these precautions. Its more important to just get the food into buckets.

      Matthew Brown, I think so but most preppers disagree. I did a video on the matter and finally took it down after I tired of debating the matter. In all truth though its probably a waste to use a handwarmer without a sealed mylar bag. Unless you glue the lid onto your bucket. Which makes them crazy to get off. I stopped doing it that way about two years ago. Everything we prep these days, goes into vacuum sealed canning jars. Cause like I said, you gotta have the jars anyway.

    For popcorn, adding a few drops of water, mixing, and waiting 10 minutes helps with making all kernals pop. If your corn is in a zip lock or jar you can treat the bag before sealing so it hydrates the whole bag.

    If you’re using an oxy-absorber then you definitely should be using a Mylar bag “bucket liner,” which are all food grade (FG). That being the case you do NOT need to use a food grade plastic for your bucket, as the food will not be in direct contact with it due to the liner. Not a huge deal, but it saves money and increases options in case you CAN’T find a FG bucket.
    Label your Bucket on the outside and your bag on the inside where you seal the top. Tape over top of the label on the outside with clear packing tape so it doesn’t get worn off. If it does you’ll still have the label on the inside. Label each bucket as you seal it up. Don’t start multiple buckets of different things at once so you don’t get them confused.
    Don’t seal the bag half way up. Rather, squeeze all the air out and seal it up at the top so you can potentially reuse the bag easier later on after you cut the seal and take the food out of it.
    Buy 6 gallon bags NOT 5 gallon bags. They’re slightly more expensive but you’ll have more left of the bag, which will let you reuse it more times. Buy the heavier 5 to 7 mil bags for the same reason.
    Keep a “pantry set” of restaurant quality FG HDPE buckets that you can dump your foods into for daily use so that you can immediately dump your just opened stored food into. That way you can immediately reuse the bucket and liner to put back another bucket (or two) of that same food type.
    Keep your foods stacked in First In - First Out rotational use format so that the next bucket opened is the oldest one on hand.
    Use 50% less oxygen absorber than the bag volume you are filling because the food will displace some of that volume and once you use the absorber it’s pretty much done for.
    Don’t store food in sizes larger than you can easily maneuver or pack into the vehicle in case you are forced to relocate for some reason.
    Have some smaller volume containers on hand that will let you share with others without disclosing the volume you have in storage, whether it be zip-lock containers or paper bags.
    When you share, tell them they need to save the container for next time they run out so they have something to refill, or you’re going to dump it into their shirt. :-)
    That’s all I’ve got for now! Good luck, God Bless!

    Freezing food, while it may effectively kill pests, well also cause the moisture inside the food to freeze. Water freezing inside individual cells can expend and cause the cell walls to rupture, which accelerates degradation/"spoilage". Certainly it shortens the effective shelf life of stored foods.

It's on the boxes not long shelf life, rubber thinner etc. Pitiful. Another rant I have is our foods are in plastic bottles and containers instead of glass or cans and NOTHING lasts not tea or coffee, katsup etc. I'm off grid and if power goes down in the cities,, the houses with AC will be hot houses & nothing keeps long. To anyone that plans to live mostly on garden foods after SHTF, I advise that you stockpile far more lids and jars than you have now. Garden foods are essentially diet foods. By my calculations you can get about 450 calories of these foods in a quart canning jar. This is a rough overall average that I reached using store bought vegetables and putting them in canning jars but I feel that it is accurate enough to calculate your requirements.
    To get from harvest to harvest here in the north, one needs somewhere around 1200 quart jars. ⭐️ PER PERSON! Don't believe me? Well, this calculation was confirmed when my grandmother died. Grandma, grandpa, and their three children, just five people in all, had over 6000 mason jars in their cellar. They lived almost entirely on garden foods and farm raised meats. And get this, grandma claimed that they actually needed more jars than they had.
    I inherited half of those jars but instantly realized that we were way short on lids. Imagine the lids you would need to keep just five or six people alive for several years.
    I recently bought lids through an Amish neighbor who cans jellies and jams to sell. I never could have reached my goals buying them just a few dozen here and there. Co-oping is a good way to get them cheap and in large quantities. It saved me and my neighbor a bundle to buy them like this. The neighbor would not divulge her source, and Im almost certain they were Chinese lids but when you weigh the price of starvation its an acceptable risk.
    BTW, grandma told me not to shy away from reusing lids. "If they don't seal" she said, "they wont dimple. If the seal fails, feed the chickens."
    We have tried this and we have lost a few seals. We just put those jars in the frig to eat right away.
    Personally though, I do not recommend using a lid more than once. Also, ALWAYS mark any re-used lids.

    A lot of people in my canning groups are having issues with “off brand” lids buckling during the canning process and also coming unsealed sitting on the shelf. These are experienced canners.
    In addition to the co-op I also ordered a couple hundred reusable lids as well. Never tried them before, but felt like it was worth it to have some on hand. I have about 1000 jars so I need to make sure I have lids!

    Still trying to figure out why the bucket needs to be bpa free/food grade, when you are storing in a mylar bag. If nothing is leaching out, then nothing should be coming in. I would expect if you were just putting it directly in the bag, it would be fine. Please tell me if I am wrong thinking it is just an extra step.

    • @zettal2316
      @zettal2316 3 года назад +4

      I started saving like this as well when I couldn't find the bpa free. Same logic as you have stated is why I continue to store in them.

      THE BUCKET SCAM. Buckets labeled HDPE2 on the bottom are food grade as long as they have never had anything toxic stored in them. People are just paying extra for the food grade label on the bucket.

      @@brendaraines9088 I'm new here. Ideally you can just store directly in the hdpe2 buckets correct? Without the Mylar bags? I haven't thoroughly investigated it but had a hard time finding 5 gal Mylar bags where ppls reviews said they weren't legit. Can I just buy hdpe2 buckets and ration diff amt with ziplocks inside?

    • @brendaraines9088
      @brendaraines9088 3 года назад

      @@slee7991 You can store directly in the bucket if you wanted. It really depends on how long you are planning on storing the product. My long term storage is in mylar bags w/O2 absorbers. I mostly use the 1 gallon size, and put multiples in the bucket.

    Mason is not a manufacturing company. It is a licensed screw on lid and seal design for several sizes of glass canning jars. Ball and Atlas among others manufacture jars with the Mason standard size(s) lids and seals. Don't use a debit card for payment. It is your money you have to fight to get back. Use a credit card, then it is the issuing bank's money they take back from the merchant.

So I cancelled it and it took weeks to get my money back. I now make sure of everything, tax, shipping, and cost before I order.
