Erica, you are such a beautiful speaker. The knowledge and advice you are sharing on RUclips here for other mothers is literally priceless. I commend you and thank you so much! The pressures of being all the things can really affect us mothers. The comment you made: "The all or nothing can be toxic." You hit the nail on the head for me with that. You feel inadequate if you cannot do it all. We already have enough as mothers to worry about as we are raising humans that we want to go out into the world and be good people. I had a friend one time say to me, "I feel like I'm dying when I'm doing the dishes." Now this may sound dramatic to others, but for people that suffer from anxiety and depression, this is very true and real feeling. Again, I want to thank you for all the advice, from the bottom of my heart. You are a treasure on this platform!

Some days good enough has to be good enough. I’m behind in my laundry and have a sick kiddo. Today, instead of perfectly sorting, I threw in a (probably too big) load, set it to max fill, and threw in a color catching sheet. We will have clean clothes, but it’s not perfect. Good enough is good enough today. ❤️

“Good enough” is how I live as a disabled person. If I lived all or nothing I’d never get anything done. “All” would hurt me physically & put me in the hospital. “Nothing” would fuel my depression & I’d end up in the hospital under suicide watch. Middle path is the way to go. Good job doing all your doing 👍🙌👏 I’m rooting for you & see & celebrate your effort and progress ❤️

You know this mindset has REALLY helped me through our journey into minimalism too. I used to let things pile up because I didn’t have time right now to clean the whole kitchen. Or I was too tired! NOW if I don’t have Time or I’m too tired, I’ll tidy up a little. Since we’ve decluttered so much, there isn’t that much to pile up anymore, so when I do have time or energy, I can clean it up in 20 mins 🥰🥰🥰

Erica. It is RARE that I clean my kitchen at night. I'm just too tired to do so after a busy day of doing all the things. I used to beat myself up about it bc everyone says you should have a clean kitchen to wake up to. Honestly, cleaning my kitchen in the morning while my coffee is brewing gets me motivated, and has become part of my "morning chores". I wouldn't have it any other way. I too am a ALL OR NOTHING/BLACK AND WHITE kinda person. It's just who I am and Ive accepted and embraced it fully. Deciding that I clean my kitchen in the AM helps me with that part of myself. Whatever I do, I want to do well. Im still working on the "good enough". Great video!!

Erica, this is my favorite of your videos! I SO agree re: all-or-nothing mindset. Now that I’ve retired, I’ve gotten much better at “good enough.” I used to work full-time as a college English teacher, so my life was FILLED with papers to grade, preparations for class, committee work, plus being a wife & mom. I am clean, but I am messy, & it’s ok. It’s taken me years to get to the point of accepting myself & not apologizing. Life is too short to live it being crazy trying to get everything done! I also totally agree re: not finishing up everything at night. I am not a night person at all. We always leave the dishes cleaned up & the sink clear, but I don’t re-set anything else. I’m just a sleepyhead & would 1 million times prefer to do it in the morning. Enjoy your coffee & your garden! Cheers!

I agree with those who say don't put it down, put it away. I try to do that but it is not always possible especially with a house full of kids. Thanks for showing us a balance and that it is ok and simple to clear a clutter spot when you have a minimalist home.

Kitchen Island is definitely one of our hot spots. Also our “hall tree” gets full of stuff that doesn’t get put away. Also shoes get left right outside the shoe basket! Kitchen islands are so functional but such a magnet for clutter because no one wants to take the time at the moment to put everything away. I usually re-set my kitchen island at least once a day but it’s a struggle to say okay I’ve done enough today and walk away! Thank you for the encouragement to say I can’t do it all.

My sink is the clutter hot spot. The kids don’t like doing their own dishes, especially my oldest. Another is my roll top desk, where I pay the bills. Laptops, a printer, a lamp, a large capacity charging port and mail. I try to keep it picked up, but there are times when it’s just too much that I close the roll top. :) LOL

I haven't quite figured out how RUclips works when you give a thumbs up. I think those videos are saved for me on my RUclips account somewhere to watch again later, which would be a list of thousands if not tens of thousands of videos. There is so much valuable content to be found on RUclips. But if there was a way to save the best of the best, this video would be on that list. You presented the lesson in such a beautiful, inspiring, & encouraging way, it made me a bit teary. Who would have known that good enough would be such an important & profound concept. How liberating. Thank you so much for providing a key to relieve me of the burden of some shackles.

Very well said. I'm living with many chronic health issues including back problems. Having less stuff and living simply has truly made a huge difference yet it's frustrating when you feel you need to clean something and can't finish the job. Starting today I will tell myself, You have done the best you can so it's Good Enough! Thank you so much for this beautiful reminder!!!

Accepting "good enough" IS hard, yes ma'am. Erica, I really needed this vid today... I'm going in for surgery week after next and have this huge list of things I want to get done beforehand because, as far as cleaning goes, I'll be out of commission for some time (I'm having hip surgery). Delegating and learning to get with "good enough" have now become the top two items on my pre-op to do list. Thank you. Love and hugs from the southern California desert, MK ❤🤗🏜🤗❤

This really resonates with me because I have finally learned this lesson as well. I’ve discovered that when I warm up my coffee 1 minute in the microwave, I can unload most of the dishwasher. The microwave dings…I’m usually invested enough to finish unloading before grabbing that cup and moving on. Amazing how long you imagine things will take to do and how long they really take.

As a former perfectionist, I pushed myself too hard to make everything just right. This just added more stress to my life. Your words rang true for me in my minimalism journey. Five years into this, and I am easier on myself. While my desk is my hotspot, I know that once a week I will spend 20 minutes, deal with my mail, and get it looking right again. Your message of good enough helps give us grace for our lives. Thank you!!!

I have a kitchen counter/peninsula that just floods with stuff, we have just moved from an apartment to a single house and a lot of tiny things need to find homes - in the mean time they end up in the peninsula. Finally I spent less than 10 minutes yesterday evening finding homes for it all - where would I look for it first-style. What a relief!

I stand and aplaude you for being up on a Saturday at 6. I am so tired on Saturday that i have a hard time to get up before 8. And i do not clean/declutter/clearout a hotspot. I make the toddler breakfast. Drink a ton of coffee and keep the toddler reasonable loud and wild. At 10 my husband gets downstairs we have breakfast and i hit the bed for 2 to 3 hours. After that i do a one Hour of Power cleaning. At 3 o clock we leave the house for 4 hours of fun.
Being minimalish means that after driving home from vacation we came home in a tidy house, took everything out of the car, put everything away and started laundry right away. 2 hours after arrival we had a meal we cooked. All that reminds us of vacation is a dirty car and 3 loads of laundry to be done.. tomorrow. Cleaning the car, yardwork and laundry ishomecoming Day 2.

this is so true. I used to not be able to start if I didn't think I could do it perfect. and a timer has been a game changer. the dishwasher only takes 5 mintues to unload and load. folding laundry only 5-7 minutes. a reasonable cleaning of the bathroom, takes 5 minutes. just do something!
my bad place is my kitchen counter.

Have you heard of FlyLady? I have followed her system of decluttering and cleaning off and on for several years. It really does work if you follow her baby steps. She also says progress not perfection. When delegating, she calls them blessings instead of chores. You are blessing your home by cleaning it and keeping it clean. You are doing a great job

Erica, you are just wonderful. I’m loving this video, this message, the realness and your sweet soul. I’m a 34 year old psychologist living in Denmark with my boyfriend and two 9 year old girls. Clutter is not a huge deal in my life and has never been - but I’m a perfectionist (now not as much as when I was younger), and I’ll dare to say that it has a lot of similarities in the way that you have to deal with it, especially our mindset. This video just spoke to my heart and left me feeling that I wish we could be friends. I wanna take my kids to the food truck and meet up with you guys. You make me feel SO good from so far away - and I’m guessing a lot of other people too. That is not a small thing in this big world.

I just have two clutter hotspots. They are the table beside my living room chair, and the counter beside the kitchen sink, where I pile up my dirty pots. I deal with the table by making sure that I clear off all the unnecessary stuff as I go to bed. The pots are more problematic and it depends on my mood. Most days I wash up just once, and other days I manage to do it twice. I have learned, with dirty pots, that sometimes just putting them into a neat pile, ready to drop into the sink tomorrow, is good enough.

My kitchen table is my hot spot! No matter how much I try, almost everything goes there before going to its home or it's the place where I don't know where to put it yet. I can even clean it and within an hour or more I am already putting things on it that don't belong. Drive MYSELF crazy!! I think it is because that is where I would look for something I need to take with me, something important to take care of or do next etc. At least I have eliminated a junk drawer and many other bad habits. That's a bad habit I need to work on. I know it's baby steps!!

Great video! Our clutter hotspot is our dining room table. It is in the centre of our open concept home, so it is the first place everyone dumps their stuff. Piles accumulate on the end and dust will build up over time. More decluttering needed so I have a place to move what gets placed here more easily…all in good time. Thanks for telling me it’s good enough…I needed that today.
