  • This is a repost under "Boys from Boston" of my interview with retired Boston firefighter and author, Lt. Mike Foley talks about several of the noteworthy fires he battled as a Boston firefighter: Four generations of Foley's served on the BFD. This is a long, but very interesting interview.
    Oral History Definition:
Oral history is a field of study and a method of gathering, preserving and interpreting the voices and memories of people, communities, and participants in past events. Oral history is both the oldest type of historical inquiry, predating the written word, and one of the most modern, initiated with tape recorders in the 1940s and now using 21st-century digital technologies.
When using oral history as a source material, several caveats exist. The person being interviewed may not accurately recall factual information such as names or dates, and they may exaggerate. To avoid this, interviewers can do thorough research prior to the interview and formulate questions for the purpose of clarification. There also exists a pre-conceived notion that oral history is less reliable than written records. Written source materials are different in the execution of information, and that they may have additional sources. Oral sources identify intangibles such as atmosphere, insights into character, and clarifications to points made briefly in print. Oral history can also indicate lifestyle, dialect and terminology, and customs that may no longer be prominent.

Boston Fire was the 1st department I saw where ladder company crews DIDN'T wear turnout boots on the roof ( and for good reason) and also where firefighters wore the Madewell jean coat.

lol that happened to my father in Medford. The guy showed up and said we were shorthanded and gave the hose and jacket and helmet to my father to fight the fire different times back then

They certainly were. Mike told me the governor was at the fire and said to him that he looked awful young to be a fireman. Thanks for watching!

I think I heard the interviewer say, "Beamon Street", instead of, "Beacon Street" when asking about the location of the Vendome Memorial.

That interviewer was me. It sounds like Beacon St. to me. In fact, as Mike Foley corrects me, it's on Commonwealth Ave.

We had a mask that had charcoal and white fabric filter like what you showed. It was kept on the little mack (engine 17, Empire Hook & Ladder Fire Co. Pottstown Pa) when I was a Jr firefighter, I got to put it on. It was not in service, it was just sitting on the engine in a compartment. It was an honor just to be able to see what wearing one likes my mentors did.
