When I was younger, our house use to be quiet then Dad would sneak over to the stereo and play this song. Me my three brothers, two sisters, Mom and Dad would race down to the living room and went wild dancing to this song. You should have seen Mom and Dad get down shaking their booty to this song. They were fabulous and funky dancers. Sadly I lost my parents to a fatal traffic accident. Everytime I hear this song, they are back with me singing, dancing and getting down. 💕❤️💕 I love you Mom and Dad.
Lovely story. I hope they're having a massive party in heaven every day and night. I have 3 left feet but songs like this definitely makes you want to boogie. I don't have my parents anymore either ( both to cancer) so anyone reading this and lucky enough to have one or both parents around tell them you love them. If they're far away phone them and tell them. If you can hold them just cuddle them, look them in the eye and say " i love you" and mean it. One day it'll be too late. Best wishes Neil, Whitchurch, Shropshire, England.
I'm so sorry for your loss ☹️ may they rest in eternal life with our Heavenly Father AMEN 🌺🌺🙏🏼 my parents are also both no longer with us. Sure miss them ☹️
In 1974 Wild Cherry used to play on the weekends at a club in Wellsburg, West Virginia called the White House. This was before they had this hit Play That Funky Music. They also played at a small club in my hometown of Washington, Pa as well as at frat parties at W&J College.
@@arcanask Yeah, you just need to look at the Focus song 'Hocus Pocus' (the Midnight Special version is on youtube) to see it was live on that show - they were told to cut the song down to fit it in the timeslot. They chose to play it at double speed instead, resulting in an impressively manic performance.
I was born and raised in Steubenville, Ohio. Wild Cherry played at my prom in 1973. They played covers at local bars and school dances till they had this one hit. Rob Parissi the lead singer/guitarist has a street named after him
If you are from Steubenville, you must of seen them play at the Whitehouse in Wellsburg, WV? I'm from Washington, PA and almost every Saturday night the lot was full of cars from Pa.
Helen Reddy, the woman who introduced Wild Cherry on stage, was one of the most iconic female pop/easy listening singers of the 70's. I see you haven't reacted to her, so it would be great to see you react to "I Am Woman" (her most famous song) and "You And Me Against The World", or any of her other great songs. Her rendition of "Christmas in Killarney" is my favorite catchy holiday song. Sadly, Ms Reddy passed away last September.
Funny story, I was sitting in a lounge at a hospital in Columbus, Ohio. My cell phone rang. This song was my ringtone. Some big dude was waiting on the elevator. He heard my phone ring; said "That's cool man" and went dancing on into the elevator.
I saw a documentary about this song. I believe that these guys were a super talented R&R band and couldn't believe that the simplicity of disco was outshining their music. They wrote this song as a sort of "we'll show you" and it became their only hit.
I heard they were in a bar and somebody said something to them about their style music, so…the song was written on a bar napkin. Don’t know if there is any truth to the story.
I have the album this song came from and it's full of funk just like this. Check out I Feel Sanctified, Try A Piece Of My Love or Hot To Trot. They did a lot of funk from what I've heard. The rock I've heard from Wild Cherry is more Little River Band than AC/DC.
I used to go see wild cherry almost every weekend when they were the top cover band in the weirton steubenville area. I couldn't believe this song was wild cherry the first time I heard it, it was going up the charts when I saw them at a local swimming pool, maybe 200-300 people there. I think it hit so fast they still had commitments to fulfill before they could go to playing arenas, I was very happy for them and loved the song.
I heard this song and got the album as soon as I could. Still have it. I don't miss being young, but I damn sure miss a lot of the dance music they played when I was young.
Love ya my Brother! Keep it up. I am 60 years old still loving and living the music of the 60's, 70's and the 80's. This was the best era for music. Your my go to guy for fun with music!! A break from all the mess! Love ya my brother....
Years back at work in a Callsite, with less than a minute to go until we went live, a fella on my left sang out, “Play That Funky Music…” then the guy on my right sang out, “White Boy!” I tell you, those were fun times sitting between those two coworkers! ❤ I used to listen to this back when I was a kid. Great song!
I grew up in Pittsburgh, not far from where these guys are from. Quite often, they would come to Pittsburgh and play the clubs on Rt. 51, near me. When this song hit, I thought, is this the same Wild Cherry that was just playing down the road last month? Crazy. Anyway, the reason these guys are so tight is because they had been road warriors for years before this song hit big. And, as you know, the more you play, the tighter you get.
So much funky fun! Hahaha!! I recall when this first came out, people wondered did he Really say 'white boy', or 'right boy'? And most people assumed the lead singer was black. Once again, FUNK knows no color!!
This became my very favorite song when I heard the opening riff back in 1976 when I was a senior in high school & it’s remained my very favorite song ever since! My adult kids will record videos if they’re at a wedding or bar & it comes on & send it to me! I had no idea this one hit wonder would live on forever as a staple at proms & weddings. It’s just the perfect song!! Thank you so much for your video!!👏😍🙌

This was one of those tunes that had something for everyone. When this came out people were as divided in their music as politics are today. People beat up on disco lovers and vice versa, it was a hot time in rock history but this song got EVERYONE dancing and forgetting about what was popular, etc. It was infectious and fun. l had a t-shirt that read Death before Disco and l loved the tune. Not enough to buy it, but l enjoyed the hell out of it. Great bass. You move well Jamal.
saw them as a teenager in a club in New Philadelphia , Ohio..it was a place called the Mustang actually a huge barn converted to a club that had a lot of local entertainment...they hadnt hit it big yet but....they were awesome

You wouldn’t be listening to it in the first place.
It invokes a voluntary foot tap!
If this song doesn't make you move, you are just paralyzed.
All these years later, this song has still got the groove. A true classic.
True story. It is classic. My kids know every word and they are products of the 90s
As a kid in the 70's and a rocker I still dug this song.
Yep, this song kind of bridged the gap between the rockers and the disco fans.
When I heard this from radio and now I have the Vinyl
That's because funk is awesome.
So very true with me as well.

Story goes that they were playing a Black Wedding and someone at the wedding said "When you White Boy's gonna play something Funky?"

The Midnight Special was my favorite show as a teen.
Wow. An actual live performance. No lip syncing, no auto tune, no click tracks. Real people with talent. What a concept.
I loved watching Midnight Special. The whole family would dance and sing to the bands.
