The 70's were a great time to be growing up. I remember how we would all get together and jam to all genres of music. We were from diverse backgrounds, and we didn't give a rat's behind about each others politics. The subject never ever even came up. Man, how times have changed.

You said this right! I grew up in South Texas. I knew this guy was white because I was allowed to listen to it. I had a very racist mother and I had to be very careful to the groups I listened to.
When you're all standing there in bell-bottoms, dingo boots, and shirts unbuttoned down to your belly button, it's hard to be judgy, lol.

This is a true story. He really was a rock n roll singer just as disco was becoming popular. He was singing in a club and some dudes actually stood up and shouted play that funky music white boy! Great story. His dad told him his career was over when it hit the radio. He retired off this song lol

I was in Jr High living on an Army base when this came out. White kids, Black kids, Mexican kids, and Asian all jammed to this song. The Disco era had no racial division. Can we go back there….

I grew up in the ‘70’s and the ‘80’s. The music was just music. Everybody enjoyed it and there was something for everybody being played on one station. It was an amazing time for music!
Same here, 7th grade I think, We all hung together in friend groups that weren't based on skin color. In younger generations I think our society has gone backwards from where we were and it is a shame cause we know it doesn't need to be that way.

I'm 66 and grew up with the greatest music ever! This song came out in 1976 when I was 18 and back then I could go to places that sold alcohol and had a dance floor and you can bet I was on that floor shaking my booty. Bell bottoms and platform shoes were the thing back then. We had style.

Back in the day we never cared what the race of any entertainer was. We appreciated great music and we spent our money on various concerts and albums to just enjoy the talent. My record assortment was a combination of many artists. So happy to have been a part of this time in music.

The song is a true story! Wild Cherry was a boogie/blues band, kinda like the Allman Brothers. They played in a mostly Black club where their music didn’t go over well. After a Patron said “Play That Funky music, White Boys” they began doing funk and pre-Disco covers and the crowd loved it! So the lead singer wrote a song about that experience!
It's funny how everyone is so surprised that he is white when he clearly says " Play that funky music WHITE BOY"! 😅

The lyrics could have been misunderstood to. mean that they were goading a band of "white boys" to sing funky music as well as the (supposedly) "black" band does
I grew up listening to rock, metal, disco, funk, soul, gospel even instrumental music, if one can open ones mind they can have a “hell of a show”! Regardless of color, real music doesn’t do race.

It was the 70's. White was black, black was white.....no one cared, no one judged... as long as you could dance to it and everyone wore cool clothes! Much happier and more tolerant times than these!

"Play That Funky Music" was THE jam of the Spring/Summer of 1976. The song was #1 on both the Pop and Soul charts. The writer and lead singer was Rob Parissi. This huge hit turned out to be Wild Cherry's only U.S. Top 40 record.
I'm 65 this year, but I loved this song, since I heard it the 1st time.
It was around my 12th birthday when this became a hit here in the UK in the autumn of 1976,so my living it up at the disco was restricted mostly to end-of-term school ones. Despite getting to know most of the other big hits around that time,somehow I missed ithis one at the time and didn't get to hear it until years later. I did see a picture of them with the caption "Wild Cherry - funky white boys" under it long before I heard it.

Again...the 1970s had the GREATEST collection of talent of ANY genre! How lucky I grew up in that decade! Most diversity of groups that had top vocals, musicians, and song writers.

This is mid-70s. I was in fifth grade. This is back in the day when America was really America. I cannot BELIEVE all of these accusations of racism being flung around today. It hurts so much.
I know 1972 I was 10 I was from Ireland got here in 1967. I did not know about racism. Hell when I got to Highschool everyone was cool. My buddies were all mixed. I am 60 now, several of my friends I still have close to me. I don't know how all this racism shit started to get so heavy in every day society. Pushed by the media. Government.
I think it all started with Fox "News". They needed a talking point and tapped into hate and fear, rather than reality and hope. They should be prosecuted for crimes against humanity.

The lyrics literally say "Play that funky music white boy." Why would you assume it was a black dude when the lyrics to the song tell you they are white?
The story is Wild Cherry was playing at a mostly black club. Somebody in the crowd stood up and yelled "Play some funky music, white boys!" The rest is history! This is from a TV show in the 70s called The Midnight Special. It came on every Friday night at midnight and featured the best musical acts in the world every week. This show made staying home on Friday nights cool. Best music show of all time!

That was the seventies. Most people, especially musicians, don't care what color skin you have. In the seventies we were free to poke fun of racism. This is a fine example. Remember, Blazing Saddles came out in 1974.

1976, junior in high school, Chicago. We listen and danced to everyone. Music was coming from garages, basements, in the parks and on the streets. In the summer the family would head south where we sit on the porch and everyone would do a little picking and dancing in the yard. Now I listen and dance with my granddaughters to todays music 🎶 like your show
This song and Brick House were club staples and filled the dance floors.
I just realized that the woman who announced them at the beginning was Helen Reddy, who became famous for her hit song "I Am Woman". She was also in the original Pete's Dragon movie.
Keep in mind that this song is from the height of the "Disco" era in the 1970s when funk music was popular with whites as well as with blacks.
it was also a time when positive race relations took a big step forward the point where the pop cultures of the day could actually make fun racism as in the song .
it was also a time for black TV sitcoms such as "Sanford and Son" that featured every black stereo type in the book and backs and whites loved. it. In other words it was a time when we celebrated and laughed about our differences instead of fighting over them.
We have since taken two giant steps backwards in race relations due to the rise of white supremacists and the rise of the back "gansta": culture . .

I always think of the Jeffersons and George always making fun of Mr. Willis the white guy across the hall in an interracial marriage (to Lenny Kravitz’s mama). He was always calling him a honky and things like that, but I never found it offensive.

All In The Family and Blazing Saddles...superb! I was the white kid "bussed" to the black school when my county integrated. It was one of the best experiences of my life. All of us kids were cool with it. Some of the adults took some adjusting. I believe the quality humorous tv shows and movies at the time helped to alleviate those fears.

Interesting fact, Wild Cherry is a one hit wonder with this song. They were a disco band, and after an encounter at a bar where a man basically yelled that at them they wrote their first ever funk song. It topped the charts in 1976 and became not only their only #1 single, but their only song to ever reach the top 40.

I was attracted to James' channel because I enjoy watching people discover that their preconceptions were wrong, and they discover a whole new avenue to explore, musically. I have never closed myself off to any genre of music, and though I may not choose to listen to pop music, or hip hop, and my playlist is a mix of classical, metal, and blues, I can still have a profound and very real appreciation for the talent, artistry, and musical qualities of any performance. It's a good lesson to learn, and much better to learn it when you're young. You'll miss a lot less, and it makes me happy to know that one more person is learning!
And yes, when you discover Stevie Ray Vaughn, you will understand how profound it is when I admit that to this day, he is the only stranger I'd never met before whose death made me cry, and if I think too much about the loss, can still bring me to tears.

I will never forget the day in 76 when my dad gifted me a cassette tape of Wild Cherry album, as soon as he picked me up from school. I loved and still love this particular song. For so many years, I also thought the singer was black. Back then there was no photo of the band members on the album cover except an an image of a cherry and a red lip.

1976. It was my senior year of high school. It was probably one of the biggest songs of the year. Tons of radio play. And discos absolutely. It was one of those songs that got people fired up.

When I was young, in the mid 70's, we didn't care about color, race, whatever. We just wanted good music and this was good music. The 1970's were not perfect, but it was a great time with great music, and great music can help you through times and help people come together. We could use more of such music today.

The fun thing about your reaction is even white guys in the band wore "afros" back in those days. They got perms to curl their hair. But yes, it was fantastically funk and funky. :) Loved it when I was a teenager hearing it on the radio. No one could quite classify the genre of 'White Cherry' so it crossed radio stations.

When I was 16 in the mid 70’s I saw Wild Cherry in concert. Back in the day it was $5, general admission & we just went wild on the floor in front of the stage for 2 hours! It was unforgettable‼️ ❤️fromOregon🇺🇸
1976. Wild Cherry's album was great! The whole album! What kills me, though, is they lost out on the Grammys for best new artist to 'Starland Vocal Band'!! Ugh! They were ripped off on that one!

Yeah, it was political. I read they were a rock band and someone said, "Are you gonna play some funky music, White Boys?" So they wrote the song and performed it. It's a classic. And yeah, it kinds of sounds like play that f*ckin music white boys, and on radio edits it's "play that funky music til you drop", and on the album version it's "play that funky music til you die." I mean, it can be interpreted as aggressive. Most White people don't care. Compare "Burn Baby Burn"(Disco Inferno) Burn baby burn(burn that mother down)
