      Less People is really the only answer. Less people need less space. Apparently my area in the west midlands has a massive housing shortage. They want to build LOT'S MORE housing and they are doing everything they can to get some greenbelt built. Crazy.

      Knights Templar. As soon as the flood water disappears, temperatures drastically rise and reservoirs start to lose a substantial amount of water out of them. Hope that answers your question.

      Yep and it'll only get worse because government doesn't dredge rivers anymore either nor re-enforce river banks from silt banks collapsing into the river making flooding even worse.
      Also to everyone else just remember the history of low fenland or low laying grounds we built river banks restricted the natural course and flood plains, then built closer to it over the last 100years.

      ZenosOsgorma true not to mention a lot of water/ flood system has not been updated since the 60s ( hell in Louisiana they have not updated since the 1920s)! Public transportation at least in the us hasn’t been updated since the 80s...... weird how the trend for the public is all outdated and not up to date .

      The EU decided in 2000 that dredging was bad for the wild life. 20 years later the rivers in Europe are full of silt then they blame global warming when the rivers burst their banks. These are the same clowns that told us all to buy diesel cars!

      what a surprise! so Lack of dredging clearing of waterways has lead to flooding in UK and lack of hazard reduction burns have been responsible for fires in Australia hmmmm where is the connection here... hmmmm #1 both caused by government mismanagement #2 both blamed on climate change.. wow.. really strange.. I would think there was something going on there..but "Im just a stupid.. must be coincidence" *drool*

    I feel so sorry for these people affected by these floods 🙁I was working around Kendal 📦 in December '15 when they had to close off most of the bridges because of the flooding. The foundations had been washed away

It’s not the weather which is at fault, it’s the fact the population as boomed in the UK over the last 15 years and we need more houses, that’s fine in a country with ample room but we haven’t got that, have we...so it’s keep building more and more roads and houses so there’s nowhere for the water to run off!       Too right, I'm only in my mid 30's, I have never seen any attempts at River dredging aside from the canal Trust who use the river near us as an access point, they have done light dredging but only for the moorings.

    Isn't it possibly to build artificial rivers, similar to canals but really deep ones to redirect some of the water when it reaches a certain level? Also plant more trees, isn't that supposed to help reduce flooding? It's such a shame for these beautiful old little villages and towns to be destroyed like this :(

    Is it possible that the overbuilding of homes and parking lots and the loss of trees n natural habitat be the cause? Perhaps this was not noticeable before cuz it was rivers running in nature?
