You need a size 1-3/32 or 1-5/32 Carburetor, it's stamped on the side. Now Timing, Take out No1Spark plug, Rotate engine by hand until piston is at the top, There is a nick or notch on the balancer,This nick or notch must meet up with the lines on the crank cover if not keep rotating engine by hand until it does remembering No1 piston at the top once this is achieved remove distributer cap there is a very small nick or line on the top edge rim of the distributor the rotor button must face or point to this nick or line if it isn't lift out dizzy and replace it until the rotor button is in line, when in line this is No1 spark plug lead when dizzy cap is replaced, Now in a clockwise direction the next spark plug lead is No5,Then No3,Then 624. Hope this helps, Good luck 👍Ignition timing, Red motors run best at 16-17 Thou for the points,Spark plugs 35-36 thou,Red motors run best at 5-6 degrees before T.D.C, Turn motor over in clockwise direction until you reach between 3-4 lines after the long line on timing marks on crank cover (timing gear cover) if you go over don't correct it by going backwards, Rotate and start again, Once timing marks are at 5-6 degrees Take of No 1 Spark plug lead and put in a spark plug, remembering piston at No1 is at top TDC and timing mark is at 3-4 lines after long line on crank cover clockwise, Don't forget rotor button must face nick -line, Now loosen dizzy bolt on block, Turn ignition to on so power to coil, turn dizzy anti clockwise about an inch then turn clockwise gently until the spark plug clicks or sparks now you have ignition timing set, Sounds difficult but quite easy, Busting to hear that Beast arc. 👍I would have that running in 2.minutes👍

@Mr Ivan Tchernegovski. I had a new 186S Patrol car in 1967 when i was a MoT Traffic Officer stationed at Picton. It was a manual transmission model, and quite a good handling car although first and second gear were quite low ratio gears which was compensated by very strong torque in third gear from 30 to 40mph upwards. I was also issued Loadometer Highway Scales which were quite heavy and i found when i carried them in the boot it affected the stability of the car at high speed. Accordingly i left the scales out mostly and the car performed very well with exceptional
road handling. The Rego, was EB991, and in later years i saw it in Lower Hutt where it was privately owned and still in MoT black and white livery.

Hi! These engines are hard to kill.worked on plenty. Have you put some oil in it? A light grade mineral oil with a new oil filter is a must. The hydraulic tapets need oil to get some value lift. And for get starting sprays just throw some juice down the throat and stand back. Double check the timing!! Thanks for saving this old classic. .. Please restore it or sell it to someone who can. All the best with it.

Well I thought they were all dead.. Anyway, pull number 1 plug.. lift piston to top.. lining up timing mark on the harmonic balancer with the mark on the timing cover. On the distributor body there is a Nick in the edge.. lower the dizzy in so the rotor button points to the mark on the dizzy body (This should be TDC No.1). Firing order is 1-5-3-6-2-4 starting from the mark on the dizzy. Bring a slab in case it don't go... Cheers 🍻🥂🍺

@@manuelstarr3602 Hi , it is either right or wrong.
If it is backing through the carby you know it is wrong and 180 degrees out, just remove all the HT leads and move them 3 slots to the right
Once you have the engine on tdc you can just throw the dizzy in, you can have the rotor pointing anywhere - not necessarily the cheat notch on the dizzy housing.
But just remember where the rotor is now pointing to when you lock down the dizzy is the new no #1 position
Only real problem is the genuine holden spark plug leads may be to short, we used to just buy valiant or ford leads because they were all about 4 inches longer

Good old Red Motor. We bought a GMH Bedford CF van ( New,$8,500 ) in Sydney,1979 fitted with the 175 Red Motor. We drove it to Perth in 1983 when we lived in Sth.Perth for a while, then back to Sydney, where we bought a house. We sold that house and moved back to NZ in 1992,bringing the Bedford back with us.In 1999,the clutch Pressure Plate collapsed (3rd time) and I parked it in our drive, where it still sits today. It has over 500,000 klms on the clock (that's 5 times around the old configured odometer},And the only work done to the motor was we had a new set of tappets fitted. It's now my covid project and I'm giving it an oily-rag do-up.The waterpump, thermostat cover and heater control unit were cactus but have since fitted new ones.Hope to be able to fire it up soon.

with no carb on u are essentially trying to get the engine to start on full throttle with no choke
u need to blank the carb hole off about 80%, then throw the ether in the gap
watch no1 cylinder valves whilst turning over. straight after exhaust valve closes, the inlet should open. keep turning till the inlet valve closes, then keep turning till the tdc pointer on the crank pulley lines up with the pointer on case. the rotor arm should be pointing to no1 cyl. lead.
loosen the distributor off +turn it forwards [ way of rotation] until points closed. now turn ign on, with coil lead off cap + close to engine, turn distributor backwards till she cracks - that will be dam close to correct.
u dont seem to have the small[ body earth] lead connected [at battery end] it will help a bit, also run jump vehicle @ 3k for max voltage, with jump earth lead straight to engine block
if u pull 1 stud out u could temporary nail carb in place
make a dipstick out of pushbike outer brake cable/net curtain wire. ask someone with this engine on 'net how long it needs to be
    good luck from UK

Lucky it didn't fire up as it would have run at full throttle. If you can't get a carby use a flat plate with a 1/2 inch hole in it instead. Starting problem is most likely stuck valves or spark timing is incorrect. Hopefully you have checked to see if it has some oil in it by now. Great engines for their day and a quantum leap from the old grey motors that preceded them. I cut my teeth on those old motors. Good simple technology that could be repaired way out back of woop woop if needed. Cheers.

149 or 179 options on EH Holdens. EH’s actually had HP stamped on the block rather than a number, these engines where a dark red. For the HD Holden changed this back to numbers and a brighter red colour followed.

compression test would probably tell you if it's going to start (valves not sealing) a lot quicker. than trial and error. with good compression and warm weather a bit of petrol in the intake hole would have fired off (too much would just flood it)
any update on this car? or is the the most recent video?

I think it’s the original HR manifold on the reco 179. HR onwards had water heated manifolds. EH & HD had exhaust heated.
Also, Look on the passenger side of the block, does it say 179 or HP? The HP was a better motor with forged crank etc.

Great progress 👍 looks like you need new battery terminals that you can tighten and get good contact etc,
Do a very short video, wanted carb, give all details off inlet manifold and engine, also say what the carb stud pcd is 🙂
also details of the carbs you've tried

you may also want to check your negative and positive cables for resistance etc, also the cable terminals and contact points, ie chassis, block, starter etc also clean them up, also check you have a earth cable from engine block to battery, all will help with cranking speed etc
