📮 A good cover letter complements your resume by telling a story about why you deserve that first round interview. In this video, I share 3 Practical Tips on how to Write an Amazing Cover Letter, and even include a free sample template for you to download.
For those of you who have never written a cover letter, or perhaps it's been a while since you wrote one, it could be difficult to start, since there are really no standardized template. A cover letter for an internship would be different than that for a full time job. And sometimes, the job application says submitting a cover letter is "optional" so should you even bother? 🤔
I walk you through step-by-step on how to write an amazing cover letter and even provide an example cover letter for you to reference:
1️⃣ Hook the reader in by mentioning a connection with the company
2️⃣ Be purposeful about the information you include in your cover letter body paragraphs
3️⃣ Use a simple cover letter template
Now that you have an amazing cover letter, check out my video on how to write an incredible resume and best of luck in your job search 😁

Hey Jeff!
Thanks for this great video! I'm a 3rd year CS student and have applied to over 50 internships but haven't heard back form a single person. I try to apply mainly for a software development role but I love CS and would be stocked to be a part of any team. I would really appreciate your help!!!
@@shivanshubansal1124 If that's indeed the case, your resume and cover letter honestly doesn't seem to be the issue. Have you been networking (i.e. cold emailing, cold calling, attending virtual career fairs and following up) throughout this time?
I am applying for both Research Associate and Program Manager roles in public health
@@JeffSu Yes, I am trying to build a network on LinkedIn but I rarely get any open ended conversations from the other side. I am also struggling on what kind of questions I should be asking the recruiter or the engineer that's on the team while remaining professional and respectful. Same goes for virtual career fairs. I am not sure how to get the conversation started and in which direction it should be guided.
I got hired!! Thank you for all of your guidance! I was told that I was so impressive and professionally polished that they wanted me to start immediately! My new dream career is fully remote and has a huge impact on the community! I’m so happy!
Wow congrats!!!! that's awesome!!! woohoooo 😁😁
Seems kind of weird how Gianni's RUclips Account was made on Sep 10, 2021 yet her comment was created 4 months ago..

Please note :

Yet your point seems legit , how can someone remember who/ what they watched.
And came back to comment.
Hey, you comment the same everywhere!! How do we believe this?
Are you a robot or getting paid to make a comment? You made a comment for every cover letter blogger and the funny thing is,your comments are all the same, lol
I had already sent 42 applications before I found the video. Then I actually followed every tip you shared in this video, even the formatting of the letters. The one application I sent after finding the video I got called for the interview and I got the job on the spot. The interviewees even said they loved my cover letter. So it may be a bit late but thank you ! :)
woohoooo congrats!!!!
Will you be able to share your cover letter? I know it's bit weird but just wanted a little starter
Hi Jeff, I wanted to thank you for all the tips for the interviews! Until I updated my resume and cover letter I have submitted over 20 applications for software engineering roles and none of them really reached out to me. After using your tips and the template, I applied about 5 applications and most of them invited me for interviews. In the very first interview also used your tips on answering common questions. I was underqualified, but at the end of the day they offered me the job as they saw potential in me! It was just mindblowing how everything went so well since I followed your advices. I highly recommend your contents to any job seekers! I just can't thank you enough, you are a life saver for me. Thank you so so much!
Woohooooo that's AWESOME to hear Maiko, thanks for making my day!! Congrats!!!
Any advice on cover letter hooks for SE or other tech roles?
I needed to read this
I have been a stay at home mom for seven years and am trying to get back into the workforce. I have been overwhelmed because the last time I looked at or wrote a cover letter, I was twenty years old, and I haven’t known where to start. I stumbled onto this video and it has helped me so much! I used your template and followed your tips, and I just got a call from the company I applied to for an interview! Thank you so much for your content. It has helped me so much!
Glad to hear it! Best of luck Shelby 😁
I just wanted to say that these tips are super helpful. I used to think cover letters were outdated and put all this time into tweaking my resume only to get little to no responses on my application. After using both this, your resume advice, and some personal tips I learned along the way I went from almost no responses in 2 months of applying for to10ish jobs, had 6 interviews/callbacks, and 4 job offers. Thank you and keep creating :)
That's AWESOME! Congrats!!!! Let me know how they go!
That's wonderful news!
Oh my goodness, I got a response in ONE HOUR. I watched this video and the resume one, taking my time to pause and apply what you said. THANK YOU SO MUCH! Interview is tomorrow, hopefully I get the job. Thank you again!! I’m so happy I found your account
Best of luck!!!
your energy is contagious. I feel like I wanna finish my to-do list right away.
Did you end up finishing your to-do list? 😁
Jeff, this is another great video. This has become one of my favorite pages as I begin transitioning to the next level in my career. This is GOLD. Can't thank you enough for how you're helping me and my family. YOU ARE THE MAN!
Thank you so much Edward! Really appreciate your comment and thanks for making my day 😁
This is excellent advice Jeff. Many overlook the impact of the cover letter and miss the opportunity to really showcase themselves prior to the CV.
100% agree, thanks for the comment!!
This man is so amazing, he can teach you what a 2 hour- seminar can teach you in just a few minutes.
Wow, that's the best compliment I received all month, thank you Kathleen 😜
Just wanted to give a big thank you to you Jeff. I've been out of the workforce now for almost 2 years and it's been very difficult trying to keep up with all of the contradictory resume, tips, etc. I actually found your channel while researching GPT prompts and how to optimize them. And when I realized you did career videos, I immediately binge watched most of them(I even took notes).
I think I've only written one or two CL's in my entire life, so this one has been a great help. Time to go apply all of this knowledge, wish me luck!
Woohoooo glad to hear it!!
I'm sure everyone agrees but, it's so hard summarizing your life experience, qualities, skills, and ambitions within 4-6 hundred words. Especially, when most companies just use an algorithm to decide if you are worthy or not. However, this video does an exceptional job of maximizing your chances of impressing companies with your resume! Appreciate the great content:)
Thank you Sam 😁
I love how there's a good mix of broad advice coupled with mini tactics such as making the starting letter of each word two font sizes bigger. Best video about cover letters I've seen on here!

The fact that you still replying to comments is so outstanding! Thank you so much! Little bit struggling with the hook, applying for Marine Scientist Assistant at wildlife conservation non-profit, having a good solid education, more than 15 coffee chats with people from the company, and experience. However, 3 years gap (look after the baby) and no US experience. Will be so grateful for your suggestions! PS THANK you so much for the videos, literally not sending any resume/cover letter without checking your videos first!
Well amazing viewers like yourself are the reason I can still make videos so I'm more than happy to answer your questions haha. While I'm not familiar with the role you're applying for it seems like you're doing all the right things (networking etc.). Have they told you there are openings? And have you asked them if it were up to them, why they would be hesitant in hiring you? I would also address their concerns with transferable skills you've had before AND skills you got while taking care of the baby (people forget that's the toughest job of all!)
How did you go with this? I would say keep an eye on positions opnening, and apply. even send expressions of interest in the job you want. do this every 3 months. Let them know you won't go away. Eventually something opens up and all the connections and attempts will work in your favour.
This was so helpful!! I incorporated these tips into my cover letter and I have had more interviews. Thank you 😊
Glad to hear it! Best of luck with the interviews!
Thank you, Jeff! This was incredibly helpful and will be sharing with all of my friends.
Glad to hear it Emma! Thank you for sharing this with your circle of friends :)
I will be using. I haven't had to have a resume in over 10 years but due to life changes I'm currently looking for something remote and I have felt so down due to me feeling as though I'M NOT POLISHED ENOUGH!! YOUR steps were very helpful. Thank you for the reassuring confidence.

Hey Jeff,
Thank you for all the advice you provide. I'm applying for mechanical design engineer or product design jobs. I always lack with how to start the cover letter. Even though I took notes from your videos and applied them to my cover letter still a small piece of advice or starting statement would help me a lot.
Tip: Just start. Start with the mentality of 'i just have to start and i can write a killer intro at the end if i have to'. What you'll find is that writing the body is the main thing, and then the intro will kind of just 'appear' at the end.
write sketchy intro, write body, re-write intro, edit body, edit intro, write final statement, edit final statement, edit the intro again because i thought of a cool way to start. Edit final statement again because i thougth of a cooler way to end. Example.
Thanks Jeff for a great great content. This is so refreshing from a normal cover letter being done. I am eyeing to apply for a managerial role, and having hard time to create this letter, as far as I researched that they're almost the same. Good tips and I will be using them with my cover letter. If you can also add more sample that would be a great help to give us more ideas that we may use.

Great video Jeff, love your channel! I'm applying to entry level finance and consulting positions but have a non traditional major (political science).
Thank you Benjamin! That's fine, most of my friends in consulting did not have a business degree. So first, you should decide on one of those directions and double down on it for cover letters, you definitely want to highlight things specific to each industry (finance vs. consulting). For finance your hook might be related to current events, and your take on how that affects the macro environment. For consulting something like the hook in this template? :)
@@JeffSu Thanks so much!! Jeff will definetly apply that, going to double down on consulting and just be super focused. Really appreciate your notes and your channel!

Thanks for the informative video Jeff! Absolutely love your editing style and how to use an example and annotate. As a fresh engineering graduate with no industry experience (only side projects), how would I be able to create a cover letter as personal and impactful as this while getting past the applicant tracking system?
I understand that I could contact a recruiter and POSSIBLY get around the ATS, but I wouldn't want to rely on that. Thanks!
Hi Vince, thanks for your comment! So first of all, don't worry about ATS. Focus on networking and getting your cover letter read :). As a fresh grad, recruiters wouldn't expect you to have tons of experience, they'll actually be interested to hear more about your side projects and how you might be able to provide *fresh* perspective with your own unique background and experiences, so lean into that!
