I figured I'd hear you say beans, clover or alfalfa! Great information that I can actually use up here in Wisconsin! Thanks Wes for the refreshing information!
THIS is what we are working on this year when you come! Establishing these blocks and openi g up the canopy! You know what my place looks like, gorgeous to a human who likes big trees, but that's not what we are hunting!! Great info as always!
@DIYfoodplotpro wait till you see the bunk house! I'll text you some pics! It's going to be awesome! And just added two new 1250lb feeders to keep up with the busy spots! Almost 2 tons of protein pellets a month is what they're eating now!
I honestly don’t think it takes a huge area to do, most of the places I’m doing this on are 3/4-1 acre. I find extremely large clear cuts are harder to hunt, the smaller patches spread through a property are deer magnets and provide much needed cover and food for the deer! Thanks for watching
I bought the 80 we built our house on in 2008. 90% quaking aspen (poplar). We had about 20 acres essentially clear cut in 2009. I had about 35 more acres cut in 2019. Wes is absolutely correct about the importance of woody browse and related cover. A neighbor friend of mine has 40 acres about 2 miles away that is mostly a pine plantation. He routinely complains about a lack of deer. I have the opposite problem and enjoy the venison from my doe harvests and the occasional mature buck.
After your neighbor thins his pines and starts his burning rotation, he’ll have more deer than he’ll know what to do with. Fwiw, you’ll need to keep setting secession back in your cutovers or you’ll be in the same boat he’s currently in.
There's areas near me that in past history native American tribes burned off to keep the game so they could hunt, they know, also hoping to push your vids out.
The reason we have white oaks here in NW Ohio is because of Native Americans burning forested areas. Most of the remaining woods are being killed with kindness.
I could definitely see that as the oaks get larger maples are dominating the understory shading out the young oaks and waiting for the larger ones to fall to have a chance! Thanks for watching and good luck this season
I like to rabbit hunt but the darn deer don't leave enough browse in the woods for any rabbits to hide under anymore. Any chance the Plot Professor can come up with a solution for too many deer and not enough rabbits?? smh
It can be difficult with our high density deer herds…Other than shoot more deer, and I think 99% of us in western KY need to do more of that, and increase sunlight hitting the ground to get more woody browse. Thanks for watching and good luck this season!
That’s a great point!! And one I wanted to mention and totally slipped my mind! Thanks for pointing that out. Good luck this season and thanks for watching

That's y clear cuts that are young are great , cover and food, trouble I most don't have enough property to do that.
