Hmm ... excellently told, of course, but I find this an unsatisfactory tale in its conclusion, which seems predictable and unjust. So I have substituted my own, and prefer to remember that:
"When Lukapehu had fled, driven in terror by the threat of imminent death, the old sorcerer gathered up the abandoned fish, and returned, smiling, to his own place, shaking his head and marvelling at the on-going stupidity of his neighbours, which had served him so well, over the years. He ate better, that night, than he had done in weeks, laughing to himself at the incredulity of the fisherman, as he savoured the fruits of another man's honest efforts. But, as he relished his last mouthful, his eyes suddenly bulged, and the laugh was choked in his throat. He fell, gasping for breath on the mud floor of the hut, clawing the air and crying out for help which none would give, because - though the valley carried his cries plainly enough, and all who heard them were well aware of their origin - they were too afraid to come near.
Two young boys, playing in their innocence by the river, found him weeks later.
The body had been chewed over by the rats and other small carnivores which infest that region; the Billobayo birds had pecked at the eyes and breast; and the teeming insects - of which there are so many in the warm, damp, conditions - had finished (or partly finished) what the others had begun.
The remains of the body lay where it had fallen, and its appearance was terrible indeed, so that it was only by the hair, the beard, and remains of the loin-cloth, that its identity could be conjectured. Soaking the remains in oil, the terrified villagers burned what was left of the sorcerer as he lay. The hut and its dreadful occupant were reduced to ash. So none suspected - let alone discovered -the fish-bone ... stuck in his throat."

This is the most passionate response to a scare story Fiction Fantastique Channel awful offering EVER! I like it. Well written... I think we, perhaps you, should post more alternate endings. I might even record original with alternate endings! E.E.F.

Hi @joannewatts9892- I don't recall where the cover image came from. This is a repost from over 4 years ago. I believe it's Hawaiian but that's about all except that I played around with it in photoshop to give it some sense of design. E.E.F. .

Here I thought that this would be a cautionary horror story about the horrible death of heartless people intentionally dead-naming transgender people..... That would have been epic!

The original author may have died over 60 years ago, but that doesn't mean it's too late to write a fanfiction.
