This is probably old news, but I just bought a new UV5R (2023) and GMRS was locked. I found a source for unlocking it with the following: 1) Turn radio off 2) Press and hold down PTT+Monitor+VFO/MR button (do not let go) 3) While holding all three buttons down, power the radio on (continue holding) 4) You will see “FACTORY” flash on the screen confirming a factory reset That did the trick for me. Thanks for all the Baofeng info over the years, Randy!
I purchased four of them about a month ago, being a newb and eager to get into comms, and had them cloned by the local guy. They do not reach out to the forbidden zone. Makes a good scanner though! I purchased 2 at the lowest price I could find hoping that they would be the "old" ones. Nope! They are the new "legal" ones. I have friends who are hams with lots of UV5Rs maybe somebody will trade me. I have both licenses by the way and I realize it is still illegal to use a UV5R to transmit on GMRS frequencies.
I got a UV-5R from Amazon about a month ago. First Baofeng for me, first time using Chirp so no cloning from an old radio. I was able to go into Chirp "Setting" > "Other settings" and set the VHF limits to 136-174 and UHF to 400-520. I subsequently bought a UV-9G (I blame you for this new addiction) and in anticipation of possibly needing to protect life and property, I was able to key up each radio from the other.
Correct, I ordered two from one vendor and two from another. The two In older packaging transmitted no problem and the other two got sent back. Then ordered two more of the old ones and they all work great.

I correctly assumed that you had the scoop on this, so I checked your channel, and bingo. The new radios are the recently government controlled versions. Thanks again.

I checked it out as well and it, too, was either was an OLD STOCK or just the 8W counterfeit. Oh, and I picked up a 5W UV5R + model with that shiny fake chrome grille. They all transmitted on the GMRS channels except the last. I'm glad they did. Baofeng is the only company that adds "Plus" and Super-Dooper" to the names of its models that have _less_ capabilities than the prior models. Beware the *Super Duper Pro Galactic Deluxe UV5R* Model. It won't transmit on any channel!
Sad hams be damned. Keep up the good work. Love the channel and you're approach to those who can't get past their own self importance. Yes... I am a "Ham".
Living in an area with yearly natural disasters I was very disappointed that my UV-5R wouldn’t Tx (through a dummy load) on GMRS. Would have been a good radio to have in a bug out bag. No “hacks” have worked for me, would love to know if one is found.
I just bought a New UV-5R and found this information out. I then went back to amazon and bought a UV-82HP and had the TX and RX frequencies listed in the description ad that showed it transmitting on 136-174 and 460-520 and bought it. It was 60.00 (twice a UV-5R) from Btech and it does transmit on the GMRS channels and all channels between those frequencies. I bought it to talk on the rugged radio channels as well as 2M and 70CM as well as GMRS.

If you lack the dexterity to use the three-hand reset, you can use the TIDRadio Bluetooth dongle and app to input TX freqs in all bands the radio is capable of RX (Cept commercial FM) I have used this on many variants as well. In the event of an emergency, you can TX on marine, HAM, GMRS, etc. from one radio. The UV-9plus does tri-band TX as well.
Just received a UV5R5 (lime green VFO/MR & A/B buttons) from amazon that absolutely allows me to program GMRS via Chirp and transmit. I'm new to all of this so who knows what year model I ended up with? Talks easily to my GM-30.
I just purchased eight uv-5rs and now have to return them. Most people in my agency carried them as back ups to our official government radios. The first time I realized the potential was when I was coordinating helicopter drops on a wildland fire (in an emergency situation). When I moved my truck I dropped my govt handheld off the back of my truck and in to the bushes. My mobile had not yet been programmed with local frequencies. I pulled out my factory uv-5r with no freqs, went into frequency mode, punched in the freq and was back to communicating. After I gave the copter directions I drove back to my last location and dug around in the bushes until I found my BK. Now I always keep these radios on hand in case of emergency.

I think the confusion _may_ come from Amazon and other venders still selling "old" stock of the unlocked radios.. They just dont realize that they've bought a radio thats been setting in a warehouse for over a year..
FYI: I just bought a UV-5R off Amazon; unable to Tx on Marine & GMRS freqs. Does anyone know if they're blocked on a BF-F8HP UV-82HP? BTW: Great channel in a world where common sense is an uncommon virtue.
loved the video! I don't log into u-tube very often, prefer to browse without that. Wanted to ask; Why does my frequency and channel list look different than the one in your video? I collected the frequencies and channel allocations from the FCC, directly from their website.
Outstanding video as always. I just purchased a couple more of these for friends. I was able to clone my current config to those and they will indeed transmit in the forbidden band. Does this mean that the stock from Amazon is still prior to April?
Sadly I didn't get a UV-5R, maybe the factory reset is a start? Great point on the emergency thing, I had been thinking that it's a great rule that may allow someone in an area with large fires to call for assistance. There are so many places cellular phones do not work.
Whiskey Tango Froxtrot!!! I just bought my Baofeng UV-5Rs last month and I programmed a few GMRS frequencies on them and it works out the box! No Hacking, Nada! I did factory reset them to erase what the Chinese put in (those repeater and channel frequencies made no sense to me!), then I added a few GMRS channels and a few 2M and 73cm frequencies. And damn! It works! No hacking, no nothing! And if anyone wants to be a sad ham about it - I am a licensed Ham and GMRS'r! So there! :p
I'm seeing that this video is from 2 years ago. I just recently bought my first uv-5r radios and a bf-f8hp. Not knowing anything about this "lock" situation, I installed Chirp and programmed all 3 radios with GMRS channels and some public safety channels. I made the PSC non-transmit, but I was able to use the GRMS channels without issue. Are they not locking them anymore?
I am not going to leave a comment explaining that my newly purchased Boofwang is able to TX on the forbidden frequencies because I value you, the reader, and don't want to waste your time. Instead here is the hack: Make sure you purchase a new model/ forbidden frequency-restricted Boofwang. Carefully remove every screw in the case that holds it together. Remove the guts, knobs, battery, antenna, etc. -SET THESE ASIDE FOR NOW. Remove the guts, knobs, battery, antenna, etc., from an old Boofwang. Insert the guts, knobs, battery, antenna, etc., into the new Boofwang case. There, fixed. - You're welcome.
I am a total new-bee with this, but the two units I received today displayed "FACTORY" when I used all three hands to push the buttons and turn the "ON" knob. Now I will attempt to put my desired "channels" into memory. Danged manual is really printed small.
@TheNotaRubicon thanks. I was getting the feeling that the term UV5R is sort of a catch-all for many different models. Nice video though. Good information presented in a reasonable amount of time.
The screen colors are customizable - so it depends on what color you have set yours to for when it transmits.. But the little red/green LED should always light up red when transmitting.
Can you still buy the older versions that have this enabled? If so, how do I tell which ones? I do have 2 of the very old ones that have this feature unlocked, but I don't use them of coarse. But I would like to buy a few more that also still have that as a option, just in case of an emergency ;-) Thank you for your time and I hope to hear back from you on this matter. Oh one more thing, if there are still some of the older ones out there, how do I find them and what do I look for? Thx again
@@charlesmckeehan9205 Is this the TX sticker on the top right inside the battery? Mine is a 7.4V but has a orange (or red) little circular sticker on it. Mine does not throw out.
I wonder if it's only a "Baofeng" thing? I don't own any Baofeng radios, however, I do own a few (other branded) TD UV-5R and TD UV-5RPro models (purchased in the last 2-4 months) that will transmit GMRS frequencies to each other and to my other GMRS radios like a TD GM-5R. It's possible those may be "old stock" also? I hand programmed all these radios to 462.575 and they will transmit and receive perfectly. Maybe the other distributors didn't get the memo?
I have a few of the older radios and do not plan to get the new (inferior?) one. However, if an unlock was to actually work, would you show us how to do it? Or is this some sort of hardware firmware that is as firm as concrete and an unlock will never happen so don't bother you about it?
Hi there, super bummed that we can’t use theses new UV5R radios on GMRS. Can you please recommend another GMRS radio that will talk to the old UV5Rs? My organization standardized on UV5Rs and now we need new members to get something compatible without requiring all members to get a new setup if possible. Thanks!
@@TheNotaRubicon thank you. Is it fair to say then that the GMRS lock out that Baofeng did was only applied to the UV5R type radios but that other Baofeng GMRS radios like the UV-9G would be able to communicate with older non blocked UV5Rs?
It's not working on GT-5r. Cloned profile off an old UV5R, used chirp to put the image on GT5r and won't transmit on FRS. Tried the reset, still won't work.
Randy, I somehow froze my uv5r while using Chirp. The key pad doesn't work so I sent an email to Baofeng support. Haven't heard back yet. My question is can I somehow unlock it using Chirp? Very frustrating.
Make sure you havnt locked the keypad by press & holdng the UNlock key... If the keypad is not locked, If it will allow it, you might try writing a known good UV-5R file (like your good backup that you made before you changed anything) from CHIRP to the radio.. if that does not work, try pulling the battery for 5 minutes and see what that gets you. If still no joy, see what Baofeng says, or just toss it in the trash and invest another $24 for a new one.
Randy, if you continue these shenanigans I will have little recourse but report you to the local appliance operator group to determine if they ought to confiscate your frequencies, buster. You know, you are interfering with people trying to bounce radio waves off the moon and exchange call signs with strangers and such legitimate, noble things. That is serious business. Not frolicking around outdoors in a Jeep yammering on about nonsense with people you actually know. I bet you don't even Morse code. Good day, sir.
I havnt heard any reports of that.. The UV-5R is the big seller and as far as I have seen, that's the one model that the FCC went after with their mean letter to Baofeng.
Ok, so ... Bow fang is how most people pronounce it, Bo Feng is how it's supposed to be pronounced, but ... Boof Weng is now how I shall forever pronounce it! :D
What somebody needs to do is take apart a new and old Boofwang UV5R and see if there is any difference, like a resistor on one and not another. Kenwood, Yaesu and other ham radios are modded to go out of band by moving or removing a resistor.
I bought several different types of these Chinese radios for simple communications between family. Nice to know where and when they can be used. I like having control over my toys.
Is it only the UV5R They locked or all baofengs? I just bought a bf-f8hp a couple weeks ago and it will In fact transmit on the no no bands (it's not me my hamster gets some sick pleasure out of breaking FCC rules I keep telling him it's pathetic he can't pass a 35 question test but he just says "squeak squeak" so idk)
So one of my customers builds logging roads on mountains and communicatess with his drivers EVERYDAY with a handheld HAM and has no license whatsoever and has done this for probably done thisfor over 30 years and he has not once been even sent a letter or fine from the FCC.

I have a recent model BF-F8HP and it's not blocked on any of the bands. In fact, it programmed all the frequencies perfectly.
loved the video! I don't log into u-tube very often, prefer to browse without that. Wanted to ask;
Why does my frequency and channel list look different than the one in your video? I collected the frequencies and channel allocations from the FCC, directly from their website.
I bought mine last month and it is capable of transmitting on FRS/GMRS frequencies!
Guess I got lucky?
I think you might need to go into CHIRP > settings > other settings > UHF TX Enabled?
And what does your firmware version say?
Randy, thnx for these videos. You do a great job. Question - how do you “jail break” (unlock) the UV9R-Pro?
I love this RUclips channel the presentation is very very good
Outstanding video as always. I just purchased a couple more of these for friends. I was able to clone my current config to those and they will indeed transmit in the forbidden band. Does this mean that the stock from Amazon is still prior to April?
It would seem so.
Yes it is still old stock as the sticker on my new UV-5R is 2017FP2633 for the CMIIT ID I gotten it just 2 weeks ago.
Alot of the 8watt versions are old stock
@@jessiehorne so it appears I need to purchase a few more ASAP
@@charlesmckeehan9205 This was the case for me as well.
I just bought a couple uv-5r8w a couple of weeks ago and they will transmit on gmrs frequencies. It's January 2024.
Sadly I didn't get a UV-5R, maybe the factory reset is a start? Great point on the emergency thing, I had been thinking that it's a great rule that may allow someone in an area with large fires to call for assistance. There are so many places cellular phones do not work.
I got a UV5RA a month ago it still transmits out of band and GMRS frequencies .
I have m-5r it the same as the UV-5R to hear the cop what do I have to set it at it picks up the single but getting much sound
great video….. i will be waiting on the follow up
Whiskey Tango Froxtrot!!!
So there! :p
You're lucky.. You must have received some old-stock that was sitting in the back of the warehouse since 2020 and wasnt locked.
So how do I do it on a new one for the lawful reasons to do so!?
Is it only for US shipped baofengs or they are globally locked? What about other models from baofeng?
I am not going to leave a comment explaining that my newly purchased Boofwang is able to TX on the forbidden frequencies because I value you, the reader, and don't want to waste your time.
Instead here is the hack:
Make sure you purchase a new model/ forbidden frequency-restricted Boofwang.
Great information as always keep up the great videos
My son got a UV5R+ and I can't clone it with my 5R's settings to save my life. They just won't install on the new radio.
I am having a hell of a time learning to drive CHIRP. I hope you can remedy your issues!
I just programmed 462.475 into 2 UV-5r's that I've purchased recently and both of them transmitted.
I just tried this with my boafeng bf-f8hp. Works perfectly.
how do you know what model you have if its the old or new model
I have BF-F8HP PRO model. This model straight from the factory transmits on 2 m amateur radio 70 cm amateur radio. The GMRS frequencies and the FMRS.
Yah.. The BF-F8HP Pro is not a UV-5R, they are not the same. This video is about the UV-5R, which is not a BF-F8HP Pro, but, thanks for watching.
@TheNotaRubicon thanks. I was getting the feeling that the term UV5R is sort of a catch-all for many different models. Nice video though. Good information presented in a reasonable amount of time.
Can the BAOFENG BF-F8HP also be unlocked?
Forgive mine ignorance, but if the the uv5r lights up orange, it's transmitting... correct?
The screen colors are customizable - so it depends on what color you have set yours to for when it transmits.. But the little red/green LED should always light up red when transmitting.
@@TheNotaRubicon mine is still stock colors. But tha k you for that clarification! Much appreciated.
Wish I had bought more 5Rs in the past.
Yo I just watch ur clip on hacking ur ur-5r and it did work 💯💯💯
Can you still buy the older versions that have this enabled? If so, how do I tell which ones? I do have 2 of the very old ones that have this feature unlocked, but I don't use them of coarse. But I would like to buy a few more that also still have that as a option, just in case of an emergency ;-) Thank you for your time and I hope to hear back from you on this matter. Oh one more thing, if there are still some of the older ones out there, how do I find them and what do I look for? Thx again
eBay green FCC stickers=bad black=good
@@charlesmckeehan9205 Is this the TX sticker on the top right inside the battery?
Mine is a 7.4V but has a orange (or red) little circular sticker on it. Mine does not throw out.
@@charlesmckeehan9205 Where are the stickers you mentioned located?
You pop off the battery and it's in the back of the radio if you have a green one it will not transmit on gmrs just black and white you're good to go
@@charlesmckeehan9205 Thank you very much for your help :) I will try to find some like that, have a great day and thx again.
Isn't it in the settings area where you can unlock the transmit frequency range?
Didn't see the pinned comment. I might be a dumbass.
Thanks!
any GMRS or FRS radio can talk to the UV-5R's. For recommendations, watch any of the 50 or so review videos I've posted in the last year.
Got new pofung uv5re plus can it be hacked tried old way no go
Randy, I somehow froze my uv5r while using Chirp.
@@TheNotaRubicon It's working Randy. Thank you very much.
Ijust got a new one as one of my primary radios rotory volume control switch quit working. so I got a new one & it is set up just nice for my uses.
Can someone tell when they are listening to your transmission on a Mars modified radio that you modified your radio?
What about all the other "UV-5R's" that are just a different model number, like the BF-F8HP, Plus, or UV-9R? Are those locked as well?
I havnt heard any reports of that.. The UV-5R is the big seller and as far as I have seen, that's the one model that the FCC went after with their mean letter to Baofeng.
I have two brand new f8td and they are locked
Thanks for saving me the time.
Bummer.
I bought several different types of these Chinese radios for simple communications between family. Nice to know where and when they can be used. I like having control over my toys.
Just bought my first 4 radios. All working and transmitting on the aforementioned frequencies. Maybe I got lucky and got new old stock!
nice. thank you Sir.
IIRC, the mean letter from the FCC only mentioned the UV-5R, and that is the only one that, as far as I am aware, has been locked.
@@TheNotaRubicon thanks for the reply I appreciate it. Love your content
@@TheNotaRubicon I bought a Baofeng UV-5RTP Nov 2021 and it was Locked. I tried everything that I know, but still couldnt get it unlocked. .
For what it’s worth. Yesterday I bought a bf f8hp and it works with those frequencies
I have the UV5R+plus (weird name) and it does seem to work on FRS and GMRS although I have not tried it with privacy codes.
So one of my customers builds logging roads on mountains and communicatess with his drivers EVERYDAY with a handheld HAM and has no license whatsoever and has done this for probably done thisfor over 30 years and he has not once been even sent a letter or fine from the FCC.
If an unlicensed radio operator transmits in the forest and there is no one around to hear it, does it make a sound?
Boof Wang is hurtful to the sad hams.
