  • This video is about how the solar shed manages the Texas heat without the air conditioning. It Really does a great job of moderating the heat and absorbing the heat of the inverters through the use of a concrete mass wall that retains the rainwater collection system.

    yeah.. at first i thought this shed was a bad idea... but earlier you described there is a cistern water tank, i was convinced it will be cool.
    very good use of water

    Thank you for the knowledge you share. It has been very helpfull. I started to build my own independence from the grid. It is seldom I come across people like you who have a desire to reach perfectness. I ordered cells from jenny, I found other reputable suppliers. I will order from jenny to pay my debt to you. My friends were at intersolar expo in Munich last week . Most important topics were 1) storage 2) e mobility 3) hydrogen fuel cells.     Cool shed, Ray...pun intended. Curious about the humidity in the shed given the rainwater tank on the otherside of the concrete wall. Does the tank have a waterproof membrane?

      I haven’t measured but it feels dry. Of course I’m gauging against the humidity of central Texas. The water tank is coated inside with marble dust plaster and the concrete is 12” thick so the diffusion rate is pretty darned slow. Also I think the shot Crete is like a seven sack mix. Of course once the a/c is in operation it will run dry and it can be set in Dehu mode if it was needed but I don’t think it’s an issue.

    Ray thanks for sharing your solar projects with us.
    I came across your channel a couple of months ago and after looking at my recent electric bill from SoCal Edison I think I need to invest into Solar. Not sure what Texas charges for electricity nowadays but SCE is forcing customers to their new TOU billing rate. Now $.33/kwH for off peak and super off peak and $.54 for Mid-peak which is crazy compared to US average of $.12/KwH.
    I see that you build your own battery backups which is super cool. I am wondering who you are sourcing your Solar Panels and what wattage and voltage are you using?
    Not sure if you have done a video on that yet. I haven't viewed all your videos yet.
    Is there a preferred voltage of panel for
    home use? I see you use large Inverters but your thoughts on micro inverters. Pro and Con.

      I've had my panels for 6 years. I will expand when I can find a great deal on used panels. My friend had hers installed 4 years ago. Both of us have solar edge inverters with optimizers on the panels. Those will be ac coupled to our hybrid inverters. She added 7.5 KW of panels to be dc coupled to the hybrid inverters as well. They were installed by a friend that owns a solar install company. The subject of solar panel selection and designing arrays is too complicated to explain in this venue. I may do it in a future video but there are lots of sources of good info on the subject. It's just that the choices are dependent on several factors including climate, availability, inverter choice, roof layout and other things. On hers we designed in three series but we could have gone with two. We chose panels on value of what was available at the time but that is different in different geographical areas and changes all the time.

    What are you powering with 8000 watts? Plant Grow lamps? Bitcoin miners? LOL. You have more than enough to cover you daily consumption! I did not see any batteries yet so I assume that you are grid powered at the moment. Adding batteries will be exciting.

    I have 2 sets of batteries, each with bms 48V 230 Ah, can I connect them in parallel so that I have 460Ah/48V

    Hi, I'm interested in how the Seplos BMS is keeping the batteries balanced. I'm tossing up between Seplos and JK-BMS with 2A active balancer. How is the passive balancer on the Seplos going, what's the max cell deviation? Would you recommend the Seplos I note you had a few quality/warranty issues with them?

      I haven’t had a failure of a BMS but mine were in a batch run where there were some failures of diode d4. They sent me an extra for future replacement in case of future problems. They also sent extra diodes and a video detailing how to replace the diode for those able to do so. They sent me a letter saying that repairing the BMS myself would not void my warranty. Other companies may have handled that issue with less transparency. I continue to be a fan. I own some 4s jk BMS. The max deviation I have is on discharge at the cutoff voltage and it varies by the battery. I don’t want a balancer that functions at the bottom end of the curve. That would be chasing my tail. The 150ma balancer on the Seplos keeps them very close at the top and in the working range with the cells I am using. Time will tell if this is still the case in a few years. Hope this answers your question. Oh and the Seplos doesn’t have bt monitoring. I will monitor through solar assistant. I expect monitoring to be a thing when new and not so much later other than SOC.

      I’m a big fan of the Seplos BMS, but yes your cells need to be properly balanced, all you cell to cell connections need to be well made and if you’ve got any cables linking groups of cells then you need to program this into the BMS so it knows. If you have comms setup and you will be topping off at least every other day the Seplos will do fine. If you rarely top off and just have the inverter pumping current at full power to disconnect then you may have balance issues over time.
