I have the 15 inch and it didn't come with a pen or a sleeve 😒 I like that it's beautiful and fast but not sure if I want to keep it. I need speed and capability to upload and edit 4k videos quickly. Just know, there is no windows movie maker on this and it's gone for good. Didn't get it for the tablet mode, so...
I've had this laptop for the past month, I'm both a Planning Professional and Urban Researcher and I find it perfect for writing, note taking, general research and of course, entertainment - having a device of this quality, size, specs and pricing is great! - This is my first HP since about 2015 when I purchased a SP4 and then a Surface book. If your a student or a professional and wants a device specifically for productivity/work and useful for travel, this is a great option. BTW, Lisa thanks for the great review as always!
Paola I checked the best buy black Friday deals, and they will be selling the i7, 16gb of ram, and 512 GB SSD for $999. I'm gonna get it. Just wanted to let you know!
Bought it in Sweden and got it with the new gyro tilt-pen. It has tilt support as well as presentation support where you can use it as a gyro-mouse pointer(though far from as accurate as say a wii-mote, I'm actually slightly disappointed but it might be software issues or I just have to use it on a separate screen. It also has usb-c charging and button at the top that you can use as an eraser. Feels more premium than the last pen. Otherwise, the pen and the computer is awesome.
Thank you again! I ended up buying this laptop because I got an amazing offer here in Romania 🇷🇴 your reviews are in depth, with the most important details covered up and you even answer our possible questions as consumers/buyers. Amazing channel and cool videos 👍🏼👍🏼 the best place to come for advice
I just bought this one on this Black Friday from BestBuy. The appearance and design are perfect, really love it. However, this 'almost perfect' laptop suffers from heat problem, crackling speaker, and lagging mouse pad: 1) Heat problem: as I turned it on, it started to get warm quickly and then oscillated from between 'hot' and 'burning hot' in the area over the speaker and the back. At first, I thought the cpu was overloaded by updating windows 10 and syncing my onedrive content (which I suppose shouldn't be considered as such a heavy task for a core i7 cpu). Then, after restarting, the same problem still appeared (now it's even worse as the laptop was almost in idle mode - no app, no web, no updating or syncing). 2) Crackling speaker: as the speaker is located above the heat sink and cpu, I guessed it got affected by the abnormal heat. As a consequence of the extreme heat, it started crackling after 30-40 mininute of normal use (2-3 tabs for web browsing, 1 tab of youtube video clip to test the speaker). 3) Lagging mouse-pad: the mouse-pad seemed very smooth at first but then it occasionally got rigid and lagged. Particularly, when you use 2-finger scrolling and it just detected only 1 finger. One more thing is I realized it's kind of cheaply made compared with the mouse-pad on my HP Envy from 3 years ago. When you touch the pad, it gave the feeling that it didn't fix to the body of the laptop. I brought it back to BestBuy to exchange for a new one. I'll update as soon as it arrives. Hope you guys won't get through these problems
I wish a reviewer would show what happens when using technical drawing tools like Visio, or the various Adobe products. Hey Jessica, I too bought the same deal and my spectre cooling fan runs continously making a loud noise even on idle condition. How about your thing? is it behaving in same manner?
The reason this is happening is because you just got it. There are updates constantly running in the background even though you aren't updating the computer since it is brand new. The best thing to do would be just to leave it on overnight, (make sure it doesn't sleep) and then all the updates will be installed. You will no longer have the heat or fan problem.
Another great review which is appreciated. Each Christmas I purchase a gift for myself and for the last few years it’s been a notebook. The computer I replace goes to my daughter. This Christmas it is going to be either the 13” or 15” Spectre. I’m a HP fan as I’ve never had a problem with any system I’ve purchased over the years. Now I’ve seen Lenovo has introduced the Yoga 920 with similar features. I’m looking forward to your smack down of the HPs and the Yoga so hopefully I can make a good decision. Thanks for being so thorough with your reviews.
I bought the I7-8550U CPU 16GB RAM 512GB SSD silver 1080P screen with Intel UHD 620 graphics and it's an amazing laptop. It is super light, portable, lightning fast, good typing keyboard, Windows hello is awesome and battery life is about 8hrs, it can run a little warm on occasion but its not bad at all. When I first got it it would run very hot and the fans will constantly kick on but it was while Windows did all the updates after a couple days the over heating issues all went away. I am super happy with my purchase.
I had the first gen spectre x360. Sent it in for warranty repair but they had trouble finding the parts so they upgraded me to this one with the 4k display. It's a really nice laptop.
Yes! I've been waiting for this review, just in time for Black Friday. Thanks for mentioning the heat issue. Glad to know they try to fix it. I'm still considering paying more and get Thinkpad X1 Yoga to avoid all the issues HP seems to have: heat, poor QC, lots of driver issues and bloatware.
People complaining about terrible HP customer service aren't joking from what I've heard. Not really that it matters for me...I have three very technical men in my family who can fix all the driver and support problems themselves usually. Mostly it's hardware issues like a broken screen (I did that with my MacBook and it was so expensive to repair!!) Etc that they find it necessary to send it in....
Please review the Acer Spin 5! It’s a $500 Budget 2 in 1 with an i5-7200u. It’s been a while since you reviewed a budget laptop so it’d be cool to see! Great video (and shirt) Lisa!
I'm glad I watched this. I accidentally ordered the 15 inch without realizing that there was a larger version. I quickly returned to Amazon, cancelled my order and ordered this one instead. I'm just using this for writing (Yes, I demand high quality in all my tech, even if it's for something as simple as writing.) and i don't want a giant laptop. This is slim, small and as sleek as a gradiented glass marble.
1. How it handles work for 2D design (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) in high end configuration? 2. Supports more than one monitor? 3. Wacom EMR pen; works well with it? 4. Bluetooth; for bluetooth mouse?
How is your Sceptre faring so far? Does the hinge get even more loose with time? Are the fans really that bad? Does it overheat much? Can you even take advantage of the processor or does thermal throttling limit you on that? Any additional issues?
Another great review Lisa! I won't buy Hp products, and I told and wrote them this. Never heard from them. They wouldn't support firmware updates for new versions of Windows OS for an expensive HP photo printer P1100, that I loved. I had to recycle the printer and toss out several expensive print cartridges.
Thank you for these excellent reviews I think you have really helped me with making a decision between the 360 and the laptop only version of the Spectre.
was deciding between this and the yoga 920, and went with the yoga 920 because i prefer the keyboard and the slightly larger screen for basically the same price with the discount. absolutely love the yoga 920, just incredible!
Lisa you're the greatest reviewer ever.. do you know what type of microSD card is the fastest and max size for this laptop? Also can I connect dual monitors to it?
I noticed while you were testing the pen, the hinges magically reverted back to the previous model. I am now curious, why did you not test the pen on updated model? Also, I am a big fan of your channel. Thank you for bringing the best review content youtube has to offer, keep it up! :)
So I ordered a customized one from the HP website and it included: windows 10, 8th gen I core 7, 16 Gb,360 ssd card, tilt pen, and lastly I went with the 1080p display just for the sake of the battery lasting me long since I need it for college and sometimes I need a computer to study all day long. Total purchase with Michigan taxes of $81 was $1430.99. I took 2 weeks for it to ship from China ( Ig since I customized it). The computer was good and I really liked the tilt pen, but wasn't a big fan of the speakers around 80% and up of volume. Literally 2 days later the price went down $150 so I decided to call and they offered me credit then few days after it went down $50 more. Asked for more credit but they refused initially until I asked to return it, mainly because of it's OVER HEATING PROBLEMS!!! like it would heat up like crazy if it's updating apps from the store or if I'm taking notes. For me it felt so risky since it heated up this one time and turned off. So I returned it and I'm probably going to stick to my old $200 computer from freshman year.
Purchased my spectre 13" with 4K screen, 16GB ram, 512GB SSD and the quad core 8th gen core i7 in black and copper. Purchased it 4 days ago straight from HP and i expect a shipping on Nov 28th. I can't wait to receive it.
goggy1983 I received the laptop a week ago. I've been using it all the time. I will say that, it's a beast. It's not a gamer's laptop but whatever i throw at it, it eats it like a champ. The design is very solid, premium and beautiful. The battery life is also not disappointing. I easily do 6h and up to 8h depending on the apps that i used. The thing that i DON'T LIKE is the Pen. I have Galaxy Note 8 and got used to the SPen and compared to that, it's pretty awful. It's not as responsive as the SPen, it's not as accurate as well. Simply, i don't like it but i use it once in a while. Everything else is great.
Meanwhile i took one for myself. Yes, it is fast but build quality is so so. Touch pad could be much better, when you press it you have really weird feeling. like some screws are not in place (not just mine but 2 others i tested in a shop, only 1 was ok but not the model i wanted - so it is HP quality check issue for sure). Also, noticed strange sound coming from the machine when i turn back light keyboard ON...HP support staff couldn't explain it either. Build quality could be definitely better. For the price tag it could and must be much better.
As usual great video Lisa, I agree with you. I do not like the glassy display that makes the screen look reflective with light. I am not ready for Black Friday, I still can't decide for the Yoga Lenovo 920 or the Spectre X360 13 late 2017 model. Which one do you prefer Lisa and people?
Thank you, Lisa, for another excellent review. I was wondering if you had measured the difference in brightness between the 1080 vs 4K models. You said the colors really pop on the 4K, but I'm also curious if the brightness goes higher. Thanks so much! Additional background: I just bought a 1080 model and noticed that the display is noticeably dimmer than my 2015 Spectre x360. I am trying to decide if I might instead trade up for 4K (and in turn sacrifice some battery life) or instead spend the money on a solid monitor for those times I'm doing photo/graphic work. If the difference in brightness is nil or small, I might for the external monitor instead. Thanks again.
I think that there is a mistake or two in the video. HP ships it with a 65W power adapter, and not 45W as Lisa said. Also the pen is rechargeable and has a USB-C port, it doesn't need batteries. This also was told incorrect in the video
The real question is where does Lisa get her awesome shirts :P . Great review as always. I have one question, how does the pen on this compare to the surface book 2?
Just an update for the Hp tilt pen that will support tilt will be coming out probably around December. It will be around 100-120 since you can find it on Holland website.
I prefer the last generation's more rounded and "friendly" design. Glad I got that one, the benefits of the new model are not significant for my needs.
Hi Lisa, if it is possible can you also review HP Envy 13 2017 edition with 8th gen cpu.. I know it is not the premium model of HP but it looks very interesting as well. Especially battery life supposed to have very good in that model
Hello Lisa! Always enjoy your reviews. I have a quick question - How different is this from the previous version of spectre x360 13 inch 7th Gen? I am not able to find any articles or data on this. I am talking in terms of performance, heat, battery life etc. Is it really worth a few hundred bucks more to get the new 8th gen laptop instead of the 7th gen due to any differences?
Thanks for the thorough review. Am shopping for this or Lenovo 920 or Dell XPS so looking forward to smackdown. Acutally need 4k, 512 GB SSD, 16 GB RAM. I use the iPad Pro with Pencil for art so tilt support not a deal breaker.
Great review as always. I don't suppose you plan to look at the version with privacy screen that has the 120hz refresh rate (ae014dx)? Would love to hear your thoughts on drawing on that, and if it comes close to an ipad pro 2nd gen.
Are you planning on reviewing the new HP Envy x360 with the Ryzen 5 and Vega 8? Looks like a good piece of hardware from the specs. Your reviews are the only ones I need:D
I just ordered the 15' Spectre from best buy, I was going to go with the cheaper Envy custom made from HP but haven't heard much on the Envy review wise.
It's the same, just without Thunderbolt. The Envy sort of makes up for it by having an AMD APU as an option now that AMD CPU cores are just as good as Intel, but they're GPU is still much better.
Hi Lisa, just got mine 2 days ago and IT COMES with the new rechargeable (USB-C) pen. I don't know if it is because it's the top of the line model (4k, i7, 1TB) or because I bought it here in Europe. Just so you know the new pen DOES, IN FACT, EXIST!
It's a chains of shops in the Netherlands called coolblue. Just Google it. I think it's www.coolblue.nl US Keyboard and delivered to Netherlands and Belgium ONLY!!! I came to Amsterdam on holiday and got one immediately
Beautiful review, congratulations! I wanted to bring a question .... On this model I can use in addition to his pen with 1024 levels of pressure an alternative pen, with higher levels of pressure and then more precise like that of Yoga 920 or Surface Pro? Which models? Thank you
i don't understand peoples issues with fan noise, i have last years model of the spectre and i honestly have to put my hand along the vent to feel of the fan is on, like you cant hear it unless you are purposely trying to
Thanks for the review. Just wondering does a microSD card protrude when inserted? Also does it support UHS-II? I had hoped to use the Windows Hello camera for 3D scanning, is it an Intel Realsense camera?
thanks for your review. I ended up buying this model which is awesome. Although I have been getting error 90b after updating BIOS. It disappeared after reflashing but it felt kind of hot for some times. Which should be the safe temps for the 8550u?

I just bought this one on this Black Friday from BestBuy. The appearance and design are perfect, really love it. However, this 'almost perfect' laptop suffers from heat problem, crackling speaker, and lagging mouse pad:

Great review! Just got one of these as a business laptop and so far really pleased. Awesome reviews as always! 😊👍
How does HP Envy 13t compare to this given it has comparable specs with a much lower price?
Shriraj Attal was wondering the same thing.
Just bought this model with the privacy screen. One thing about that screen is that it is 120 hz. Really makes browsing and animations better.

Great review Lisa! Both the new 13 and 15 inch are on sale on the HP.com website. Hundreds of dollars off! Yay!

Good point about heat and the chassis material that HP uses with the Spectre X360.

Good review Lisa. I love your review. It's very comprehensive and details. Thank you and keep productive.
Eduardo Valencia I'm also trying to decide between them. I think in the end its price that will decide for me.
getting one soon for Christmas !!! So excited :)
Great review Lisa! But instead of doing a smackdown with the 14 inch Lenovo 920, could you do a smackdown of the same-sized 13.3 Lenovo 720?
I think I will get this finally, thanks for the review!!
Thank you for the comprehensive review. I would like to know how many levels of pressure the digitizer and pen support?
I enjoy your reviews greatly. Thank you.
I too would like to know many nits of brightness the 4K model goes up to.
I have come across this review.

Another great and thorough review as always. Does the screen wobble while you type. It seems to me that it does from this video.
I've been waiting, thank you..!
Great job Lisa! Thank you so much for your help in my research!
I prefer the last generation's more rounded and "friendly" design. Glad I got that one, the benefits of the new model are not significant for my needs.
Good review and finally another 2in1 that is affordable. By the way what's the brand of the artist glove you're using?
Really great review! When can we expect the smackdown with the Yoga 920?
Thank you thank you very very much. I had a great confusion in buying Spectre, I think I am going to go for it
Hi Lisa, if it is possible can you also review HP Envy 13 2017 edition with 8th gen cpu.. I know it is not the premium model of HP but it looks very interesting as well. Especially battery life supposed to have very good in that model
bought the spectre because of this review, definitely a sweet little lappy.
Speakers were on top in last gen 13 inch too. I have one of those and it sounds amazing.
Cool review, Lisa!
Lisa, very good review. You said this computer gets hot but is it acceptable to use on your lap when streaming a video? Thanks.
You are such an excellent reviewer!
Great in-depth review! Wish this had a full size SD card slot. Looking for something exactly like this machine to tote around with my digital camera.
I have the XPS and would recommend it
And at some point, HP will get that new driver right and tilt will work.
Is it possible to play Civ 6 on this device without an external gpu (but for the Core i7/16gb RAM version)?
Great review Lisa. Thank you so much. One question though, no mention of the privacy screen thing that HP incorporated into this machine.
Was waiting for this, yes!
EU price? US English keyboard? Link?
It's a chains of shops in the Netherlands called coolblue. Just Google it. I think it's www.coolblue.nl
US Keyboard and delivered to Netherlands and Belgium ONLY!!!
I came to Amsterdam on holiday and got one immediately
EU price 1990€ for the full spec
Speakers were always along the top in x360s, it it at sides in previous regular HP spectre.
Philosoph you're right, 13" along the top and 15" down the sides
Lisa, does it sill have the battery drain issue? (battery draining around 10% in a 12h night time while the device is turned off). Thank you!
