One thing I've noticed ,for myself anyway, is that anytime I've ever tried to group magnum or hot calibers with a standard width barrel, I've never had any luck pulling tight groups. Usually around 1 1/2" or so. I think the harmonics of the barrel are not consistent. I'm a big fan of heavy barreled rifles, even if they are heavier. Best rifle for accuracy that I've ever owned was a Colt H-bar match ll AR 15. Shooting 55gr v-max. I could cover my groups with a nickel. That's saying alot for me, because I'm just an ol country boy
I was loading for my 7mm. Tried 67, 68 and 69 grains of powder. 67 had 3 touching, 68 was about 1.75” and 69 was about an inch. I definitely agree with you that the magnums especially in the thinner barrels are a lot more picky with harmonics.
I have found skinny barrels to be inconsistent in magnum cartridges even with handloads. Even my Tikka T3X Superlite in 7mag throws them around. Even the loads that shoot well through it, are inconsistent.

Man, I have tested the Hornady Precision Hunter in at least three calibers now; 270 Win, 6.5 PRC, and 7mm PRC (these are the three I definitively remember), and none of it has shot anything better than a 4" group. I even tried different lots in the 7mm PRC, and it did the same thing. I only used the Hornady stuff for getting it on paper. After trying different factory ammo and shooting roughly 1" groups, and my handloads getting all three rifles down to sub half-moa, I'm thoroughly convinced that the Precision Hunter ammo just isn't that great. Lack of consistency, and mixed powders doesn't exactly lend itself to accuracy.
At some point, you gotta say “maybe it’s me?” In my Bergara 6.5PRC the Hornday precision hunter shoots 5 shots touching same hole. And the deer I shot last year didn’t have anything bad to say about it
