    Man I really appreciate Reggie Miller comments as a Detroit native and bad boy era I really appreciated Reggie Miller game

  • @godfatherofcinema
    @godfatherofcinema 4 года назад +214

    52 year old here. Most of the commenters here weren't even thought about when this rivalry occurred. I saw it in REAL TIME and I will tell you that Jordan and Isiah HATED EACH OTHER FOR REAL. Jordan rules was boot camp and IT WAS REAL. Chuck Daly wasn't kidding around. His strategy? Make Jordan Pay Everytime He Comes In The Paint: KICK HIS *SS! And the Pistons did--Lambier, Rodman, Dumars, and co.--THE BAD BOYS! And they were Bad. Compared to today, they were MEN fusing skill and a hard-nosed blue-collar take-no-prisoners work ethic that would have made players like Lebron and teams like Golden State look like p*ssies with a capital P. No hand-check rules, hell there weren't any rules. Go back and look at the films. Jordan was getting his skinny *ass body-slammed every time he got above the rim. Back then I was still trying to get over Dr. J's retirement and Jordan was the new kid on the block. I remember saying to my ex-wife seeing the beating the Pistons were putting on him: "Baby, if this dude can get past this beating and if they don't break him, he gonna be a bad dude!" That's how bad it was with the Pistons. Isiah was the Tom Brady of basketball. He was the spark plug of Detroit, without a doubt THE BEST POINT GUARD EVER. Forget the points, a la Iverson, a point guard's job is to set up his teammates and no point guard did this better than Isiah--NOBODY. But when all is said and done, the Pistons made Jordan and if you don't believe me, just ask anybody over 50 who saw this rivalry in REAL TIME AND NOT ON RUclips! And when people talk about the best player ever--this is a moot and pointless discussion. Here's THE THING! Joe Montana was the GOAT but Tom Brady made you forget about him. If Lebron is the best then why are people still talking about Jordan? If Lebron eclipsed Mike, he should have made people forget and stop talking about Mike like Mike made people stop talking about Dr. J. who was considered THE MAN before Jordan made people forget about him. CASE CLOSED!

      Then how you go blame players for what the refs changed

    • @godfatherofcinema
      @godfatherofcinema 4 года назад +31

      @@quebaby9492 I didn't blame the players, just saying how the quality of basketball declined after Jordan retired to the point that they changed rules to make good and ordinary players look better. Jordan was next level and the proof is in the fact that he's still being discussed at all. Remember, when Jordan 1st came in the league, people were measuring him against Dr. J who, at that time, was considered the best player in the league; however, after 3 years in the league you stopped hearing those comparisons because Jordan's game was so superior to Dr. J's game. Lebron's been playing in the league almost 20 years now and people are still asking whether he's better than Jordan which means that Lebron's game hasn't stopped people from drawing those comparisons. Look at football. Before the Patriots began their historic dynasty, THE TEAM was the 49rs and THE QUARTERBACK was Joe Montana. When New England won their 4th Super Bowl you started hearing the comparisons between the team and its quarterbacks; however, after New England won SB #5 then #6 you stopped hearing the comparisons. Regardless how many points Lebron scores over his career, people who know the game know that he will never be on Jordan's level simply because he has not had to face teams like the Bad Boy Pistons, Showtime Lakers, the old Boston Celtics, the Shaq-led Orlando Magic, Houston, Utah, Indiana, etc. Those type of teams and players are extinct and have been supplanted by a much weaker product. The rules were changed to help these weaker players look and play better...and they don't!

      I'm 38 so this is the era I started getting into Basketball, and obviously living in Michigan Pistons were my team.
      I don't think these youtube videos these creators make do a good job of really illustrating what the NBA was like back then.
      And that Thomas/Dumars backcourt is sooooo slept on when discussing the GOATs.

    • @Uforyah
      @Uforyah 4 года назад +6

      You know what's really interesting? How certain people of a prior generation, constantly hold those of a so-called newer generation to previous standards, in a sort of selfish, "all about my generation" attitude, never actually allowing the new breed to develop properly, and grow from trials and tribulations like they were once allowed, mostly. You never saw Dr.J all over the media, in interviews, magazines, etc, forever comparing his style of play to Jordans', and making pointless comparisons that had nothing to do with the actual game as a whole, or talking down on the newer players. Ever. Social media has really blown the lid off of the type of people we call our sports heroes, that never seem to get enough, even after seemingly having it all, something most people can never say. League rules were not changed to make lesser players seem greater after Jordan, as Allen Iverson, who you mentioned, clearly illustrates this, as probably the best example. Several rule changes were made against Iverson, who the league effectively diminished over time, by the way. If it were not for the mainstream media, the NBA would have been able to do just fine not mentioning Jordan, but even the casual sports fan can see how things are always geared toward generating profits, which Jordan did better than anyone. Yes, he was a phenomenal player, but let's not act like there were not others that were great as well, especially when talking about the TEAM game of basketball. Just do the research on when Jordan actually cleared the rights to the new documentary, which was around LeBron's last historic championship run. If you believe that a coincidence, then you will also believe that Jordan's statue really had nothing to do with what he achieved in the sport of basketball. A legend of Jordan's stature should not be carrying on like this, and should just allow his beyond epic career to speak for itself. By the way, let's not act like Jordan did not benefit from rule changes as well. He knew how to use his muscle on, and off the court. Much respect to ya.

      Individual stats, Rodman doesn't come close. Win/Loss stat , yes Rodman has him. Would you rather have Rodman on your team than Shaq? Hope not. Rodman was a phenomenal role player though to give any team better chances to win due to his defense and rebounds. Shaq still averaged nearly 27 pts and 13 rebounds. Shaq's kryptonite was his free throws. " Hack a Shaq." If that guy would have been decent at free throws, just hitting 80 percent (which isn't a crazy percentage) he would have been more valuable the Jordan. I believe even Kobe who chased Shaq out of town and emulated his game after Jordan stated that Shaq could have been the Goat. Never heard anyone say Rodman could be the goat . That doesn't take anything away from Rodman. Gritty defensive teams were hard to beat! The Detroit pistons team that featured Ben Wallace was a great defensive team too that beat the Lakers! That was when I hated shaq, didn't like Kobe and loved to see the lakers lose. I rooted for all the opposing teams to beat the lakers from the spurs, to the Sacramento kings, Portland trailblazers, and pistons. Later I realized that it was just because having shaq was like a cheat code. If shaq never load managed and got fat, and kobe didn't get sick of shaq getting fat, that lakers team could have won 7 rings . They just had too much Shaq, too much Kobe. too much talent within 2 people and not enough room for their egos. Ok, I said too much. :)

    Half of that Dream Team hated Isaiah. Bird, Jordan, Scottie, Malone, Magic (used to be best friends), all hated Isaiah, because of that style of play. It's one thing to be physical, it's another thing to be dirty. If you can't stop a guy & you try to injure them that's some bullshit. Reggie, you mentioned the late great Jack Haley. He was a life long inspiration of mine. I was a young man living and working in Seal Beach when Jack was at Community College. I played pick up with Jack at the Marina Park in Seal many, many times over the next three Summers. When I first saw him his range was 6 inches and his defense was, to be kind, poor. By the end of his run at UCLA his improvement was remarkable. I still thought no guy I have scored on will play in the NBA. He worked his butt off and got 8-9 years in the league and a ring. He showed me what hard work and want to can do for a person. I forgot you played with Jack. Great guy. Full of life and always smiling. Thanks for bringing his name up here. RIP Jack. Hated you Reggie. I was a Knicks fan.

    I just want to remind folks, in 1991 Magic Johnson made his HIV announcement. Isaiah Thomas allegedly made some nasty remarks about Magic in regard to the HIV and him returning to play. In that same year the Dream Team 10 man roster announcement was made. Magic Johnson was the veteran baby face of the league with a lot great relationships, which included one with the new superstar of the league. If you look at that roster plus Isaiahs not-so-great relationships, there's 4 players for SURE who didn't mind him not being on the roster. That's almost half the team.

I don’t get it, and mj didn’t play the point guard position but he could still pass with the best of them but not on Magic’s level but passing and court vision is all that magic did better than mj, basketball IQ is more than passing, it’s being able to get to your spots, fundamentals, footwork, knowing where your teamates will be at and passing to wide open teamates during clutch situations when you’re being double/ triple teamed, (Steve Kerr, John paxon) footwork etc magic had the same basketball IQ that magic and bird had, bird could’ve averaged a little under 9 assists if he played in this fast paced era and if he played point guard full time and if westbrick could average a triple double, mj could’ve averaged the same think naturally and so would magic and probably bird

    27:58 I am pretty sure he did AFTER the 2016 finals when LeBron said he was chasing the ghost in Chicago and then he went to say Jordan's teammates should get more credit.

      Rightfully so tho... I love Lebron, also grew up a Pistons fan in Michigan..but Jordan is the best player I've ever seen. Hands down

      Tashrif Alam Man!!! I love this documentary. The Pistons were the real deal. Jordan should appreciate what Detroit did for him
      They elevated him. The fact that Jordan finally went through them to win and never looked back is remarkable. Jordan didn’t have to jump to any other Super Star team to win his Rings. KD, Lebron can’t say that

      @@maxmx767 not only that, Pippen was a 7ppg bench player. Jordan took him under his wing and personally trained him. Held practice sessions at MJs house every morning and worked with Scottie 1 on 1.. not only did MJ not jump teams, but he didn't team up with other star players, he took a guy off the team and personally helped create his costar. He didnt go into detail, but in the documentary, Jordan said Pippen was his main focus

      Darrell Hardy Facts!!! Pippen has the tools though! But I always debate this. Jordan went through the growing pains and developed that core ( Jordan, Pippen, Grant, Paxson, ) . He didn’t go crazy and jumped to play Dominique, Bird or Barkley. It’s so ridiculous to me when I saw Lebron and KD forming Super Teams with established AllStars to be able to win 🤦‍♂️
      Who were they chasing?? 😂😂

    See that's the problem and Reggie should know as well as those that grew up during that time that in the 80s and early 90s teams was still putting up 100 pts on the board go look up that 91 conference finals scores outside of game 4 of the finals . The Knicks and pistons series in 92 really jump started low scoring games in the playoffs. Then from there it happened in the Knicks pacers rivalry Knicks heat. Hell I remember in 91-92 during that year if the Knicks held their opponents under 90 pts the fans used to get free pizza from across the street . This narrative that the bad boy pistons started that string of low scoring is nonsense . They wud still put up pts on teams . The league hated when the Knicks brought into that notion of we can play that way and the league office said this gotta stop. C'mon anybody that watched the NBA back then knows not even the bulls and sun's series wasn't a ton of points. Today's league is soft. I'm not saying clotheline guys but make it tough . Zone defense made defenders into zone punks. No man to man which sucks . Back then u had to hold ya own or u was gone

    Loved the ending to this video. You're so right not just in this scenario with Isiah but every day life. Adults need to be held responsible for their actions. You do something wrong put your hand up and own up to that mistake, if you don't think you were in the wrong despite the popular opinion then be like Laimbeer and just tell it how it is or was.

    7 gm series between 96 Bulls and Durant Warriors, home games played in era’s rules. Little chance Warriors win a 96 era type of game. I think Bulls roster would adapt great in today’s game. They could just leave the bigs on the bench, and have a frontline rotation of Rodman, Kukoc, and Pip?

    I love that we have a professional sports journalist and hall of fame baller, discussing time-warp player swap hypotheticals about who would beat who in what era.
    These discussions are more interesting now, because there is so much footage of MJ playing. We could never go back years ago. There wasn’t an app that could take me to 3 hours of highlights on any player that has ever played. You can literally watch complete random mid-season games from 88’ now. It’s awesome, and prevents some of the recency bias so prevalent in sports.

      I don’t think that’s really much of an issue. You see so many of the current generation who never saw MJ play who argued so hard for LeBron being the greatest. MJ finally signed off on the doc and so many of that generation after finally seeing all that MJ did for the first time to have a comparison it was fascinating to see how huge in MJs favor a ton of polls conducted around the time of the documentary where MJ won every single poll over LeBron. I can see why a lot of people would perceive MJ caring about which is the GOAT as petty but at the same time I also can get why he’d put it out and remind people of just who he was if the debate is going to continue on endlessly while people only see LeBron playing and don’t have a comparison in front of them. MJ has always been the ultimate competitor so why would this be any different? The debate is silly anyways - i just choose to appreciate both. It’s all subjective anyways.

    Michael Jordan told Rod Thorn "I'll play only if Isiah isn't on the team". Go read The Dream Team 25th anniversary book folks! Its in there!

      Tomestis Vivian , Jordan felt in a way toward Asiah. And that is the reason why he was told, indirectly, that Asiah wouldn’t be part of the dream team. They didn’t want to lose Jordan. They knew Jordan wouldn’t want to play with him.
