- I found Ghost Town Gold! Many prospectors ignore old hard rock camps, even if they produced some high grade gold. I recently took my metal detector out to an old Ghost Town site that was a boom and then a bust more than 100 years ago. The old timers left me some nice gold that I found with my metal detector. In this video, I will take the gold bearing quartz and process it down into a gold button.
The Gold Monster 1000 that I used in the video to find the gold quartz can be found here:

good job my brother ..... looks like a great spot ....let us know when you go out there again and we can help you drop a shaft .....looks good and glad you mentioned that the Gold is still out there, but you need to know what you're doing to get it ....love your book and we highly recommend it to anyone out there ..... stay safe out there and keep them vids a coming ....
That spot was roughly half way (more or less) between me in Northern Nevada and you down in the southern end of the state. Next time I am out there, I will bring tools to go deeper into the ground - I wasn't prepared to "sink a shaft" or even go more than about a foot deep into more solid material. Thanks for the book recommendations - I've sold almost 19,000 copies since it first came out.
Well done Chris ! Cant wait to see you run a couple buckets of that stuff 😲👍👍⛏
I'd like to collect a couple buckets of that stuff!
Thank you! Great video. Washing soda is sodium carbonate, and can be purchased in most grocery stores. Heating the mold also helps to drive away moisture... moisture in your pouring mold can cause an explosion if molten metal is poured into such a moisture-laden mold.
Washing soda is sodium carbonate, but most Arm and Hammer is sodium bicarbonate.
I bought your book just to have. Picked up a few new things in it. I'd like to have you sign it when I get back mining full time.
If we are in the same place, I'd be happy to sign.
Nice work Chris! 😎
Glad you enjoyed it
You need something that can silence the wind shoved on that mic... like a fuzzy wind sock, or an owl, or something like that.... XD
WHOoooo.... would do that to an Owl? You Freak...
Or maybe just move his mouth up and down and ad the voice later, a lot later 😂
I have a lapel mike but did not have it with me. The Mike I used id have foam and what they call a dead cat over the mike - what you hear is what that mike picked up, with a great reduction I did in the editing program.
Thankyou Chris , for your good helpfull information , some good gold their.
Glad you enjoyed it
Nicely done Chris.
Thank you kindly. Glad you enjoyed it!
Nice Gold there Chris...And enjoyed you showing us the brake down of the different recovery methods...
Glad you enjoyed it
Nice seeing the GM 1000 helping pay for itself! Great video, Chris!
It sure is paying for itself. Glad you enjoyed the video.
You did well on this trip!
thanks.
Enjoyed it as usual!
Glad you enjoyed it
Great Video Cris.
That's the way to do it boys n girls. Start to finish if you want to be a prospector.
Thank you kindly. Glad you enjoyed it!
Good stuff ! On the wind noise , I use a little kid sock on my GoPro . I trim off the excess and sew it up. Then cut holes for the lens and back screen . Take a lighter and lightly melt the edges of the cut outs so it does not fray . It works very well.
I use a cannon camera and had both foam and a dead cat muffle on the mike. It was very windy.
@@ChrisRalph There are time it is unavoidable . You did great .
I checked youtube videos and found that a guy removed caliche by soaking the ore covered with caliche in vinegar for 3 days. Almost all the caliche was gone, and he removed the rest with an ultrasonic cleaner. He showed the process, and the gold after. It looked great!
Yes you can remove caliche with acids, including vinegar which is a natural acid. For my quartz, the gold was small and it was easier to just crush it and separate out the gold.
Nice gold!
Thanks!
I love this, you are telling the truth
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it!
Very cool! I have some similar caliche coated quartz I picked up by Randsburg after it set off my metal detector. I have the vein GPS loc's and I can't wait to grind this up. Another great educational video thanks!
Sounds like you are doing great! Thanks for the kind words.
Nice spot !!!!!!
It is a nice spot and I intend to return for more....
Very cool video, from start to finish! Didn't know there were kilns that small, I want one.
One question, have you noticed any of the residents following you back home? 👻
Nope - we were truly in the middle of nowhere.
Nice Chris great video love to get some buckets of that stuff heavy pans
You and me both! Thanks for the kind words.
Bought your book Chris , keep up the good work! ,
Awesome, thank you!
Great vidio again thanks Chris for sharing
Glad you enjoyed it
Excellent share. Every detail stuck. I'm quite pleased with 1/10 pure au, frankly if I can weigh gold in grams I'm floored 😊 tenths not so much but I am learning the value of assays
Thanks. Glad you enjoyed it!
Another great video! Can you hint at the district?
Central Nevada is as close as I will come to saying where.
I bought your book momths ago. Ive yet to read it. Im a arm chair adventurist apparently.
Yes me too. Ready any minute. But it's fun jus watch'n Cris.
Maybe read it to stay in the air conditioning and out of the heat.
Congratulations
Thanks!
It's not that we don't "think" about hard-rock mine, it's all the trash... as you mention, Chris !
Major trash Since the area is layered with caliche covered quartz, your comment about scrapping away the top layer of gravel certainly makes sense Chris !
Some are worth it and dont have too much trash.
Hey, Chris. I love the videos. I've learned a lot through watching them. I recently acquired a gold bug metal detector which doesn't indicate fairs or non Ferris. It's by numbers and it's wondering What the number range would be to indicate? A good chance that it would be gold. Keep up the great work on the videos.
Watch these two videos and read the manual. The two videos will explain a lot and and give you lots of information.

Thanks. Glad you enjoyed it!
I bought 14,999 Copies of the Book.
I gave each one 5 Stars. I hope that Explains some things...
I am thinking you did not buy 14,999 copies.
I dont feel so bad about my garage organization now 😂
I agree that I could do a lot better.
@@ChrisRalph No, its impossible. Its an American garage, I have a couple of hobbies and it is a disaster. I could fit in a new motorcycle but then no walking through.😂.
Could you do a video about how to tell the difference between rocks with gold in them, and hot rocks? Thanks!
I will do this in the near future.
I'm traveling from FL to AZ or ??? with my tent to camp a few weeks and metal detect for nuggets. I don't want to accidentally get on a claim. Is it possible to rent access to a claim for 2 weeks? Do you know anyone who does that? Did you try an actual sock to filter the wind noise?
Lake pleasant north west of PHX panning allowed in park boundary. Just google
Look into joining one of the Arizona prospecting clubs to get access to their claims. The Mike I used did have both foam and what they call a dead cat over the mike - what you hear is what that mike picked up, with a great reduction I did in the editing program. It was VERY windy.
@@ChrisRalph THANK YOU... which one would you recommend?
@@buddyratliff6535 thanks
The "Roadrunners" is a club with lots of claims. See: www.roadrunnergold.com/
Hi Chris! I looked at the quarts in your specimen and saw c that the the quarts looked clearish not like bull quarts a solid white. There were well formed crystals. My question is that a low pressure zone?
I think you were seeing something that wasn't there. The quartz was not clear at all, and was solid white.
Question ?, Australian gold detector shows , The detectors they use have HUGE coils ,while gold monster has a small coil. Can you explain the difference.
Different detector technology, different geology, different gold deposits, etc. It suffices to say on any job, you need the right tool for the job. When I was in Australia, I mostly used big coils, but I sometimes used small coils. In the US, I also use bigger coils sometimes and smaller coils sometimes, depending on conditions. Also, TV shows are for entertainment, if you think everything on them is totally real, you are mistaken.
Quick Correction - That's not Propane, it's MAPP Gas.
Propane ~ 1300°C VS MAPP ~ 3000°C
One torch was propane, one was MAPP gas.
Chrss you have the patience of a saints and thats seems key to your success. Would that statement be accurate?
You have to be patient and persistent to be successful.
@@ChrisRalph thank you for your response! You are a man of your word. To be good or great at anything takes alot of practice and knowlege and patience apparently. Thank you once again for your honesty and everything else youve done and continue to do.
can you use borax. as a flux. and ,do it a few times to burn off the impurities. in the gold. would that work.
As I said in the video, I use a mix of borax and sodium carbonate as my flux.
Are there safe chemicals that can remove caliche if you don't have a crusher, just a dolly pot? I enjoyed seeing the ghost town area. Thanks!❤
Acids, even vinegar will remove caliche.
Does your book describe sites that I can go to sluice in California? I'm trying to figure out how to begin. (I don't want to get into trouble.)
Laws change, and stuff that was legal in California when I wrote the book is not now illegal - including dredging. I update the book as I re-print it every couple years, but I cant keep current with legal advice. I strongly recommend you join a local prospecting club - there are several in Southern California and they have claims you can safely and legally prospect on.
Personally I think you should just join a club
Could active volcanoes be a good source of gold?
No. Even recently active ones are not good. Check out the video I did on this topic - See: ruclips.net/video/Cd3w3KZyX3E/видео.html
I like to see people melting Au indoors. It keeps the trace amounts of Mercury confined.
1. I didn't stay in there to breathe it, and 2. There is a door and a window both open within a couple feet, and 3. Not all gold contains traces of mercury- this did not.
@@ChrisRalph I know you are a professional. It just sets up for some of the others to see you melting indoors, and say "I saw a pro melting raw Gold on RUclips, I can do that in my living room, because I don't have a garage, or "What is a fume hood"?
Kaleji? Coleji? kuh col cal How the heck do you even spell it?
Caliche. Pretty common in the southwest deserts.
@@ChrisRalph Ahh! Thank you very much. I'm a lifetime (almost 74 yrs,) Alaskan. No wonder it slipped my probiscus! Thanks, buddy great stuff you do!
