- In this video, I’ve got 10 lies that can keep you from Gold Prospecting success. If you believe them, you probably won’t find much gold. So, I am going to go over them and correct these false ideas so you can become a better prospector. These are things I have had people tell me that I know are just not true. Sometimes they want to argue with me. To dispel these myths, we are digging onto ten wrong-headed ideas that will keep you from being successful in your prospecting efforts. We will examine them one at a time, and see why they are just plain wrong.
For those who want to learn more about Prospecting and finding gold check out my book, Fists full of Gold. It’s an encyclopedia of everything on the topic of prospecting. It’s available on from High Plains Prospectors. (Affiliate) You can find it at:

1-4, I never believed, 5, I tried, and still do, 6, not true but sometimes it's the thing to do, 7, nonsense, 8, always a good idea as the sure knowledge of the presence of gold is a great motivator, 9, this is folly! I couldn't tell you how many times I ran away from gold to go someplace where there was none. 10, As the old timers said, gold is where you find it, often times its found where you never expected and its not where you thought it was a sure thing! Gold will trick **** you!!! Good advice Chris, I concur with each point you make! One thing that should be stressed, and that I have done many times, Is the mental aspect. Defeating yourself before you even get started. This happens a lot when you try doing it for a living. It beats you down and you can convince yourself that it's futile to even try one place or another. It's like gambling, when you HAVE to win, you lose. When you don't give a danm, you win. If you've done your research and put yourself in a good spot, keep on swinging, keep on digging, sooner or later it's going to come up yellow!
Persistence in prospecting is so very important.
Which proves that we're all a little insane...in a good way.
We ran a small gold mine for a few years, we got 5 ounces a day just running the sluice. Now the sluice would do 60 tons an hour. But we got 5 extra ounces a a day when we crushed the rocks too.
That must have been a very large sluice.
@@ChrisRalph We built it, It was huge, Probably about 40 to 50 feet long. rocks came out the end, and sand came out on a conveyor belt. It had a nugget trap on it too. But most of the gold was in the sluice, found after clean up.
So you made what today would be over $11k/day and just, don't do it anymore? hmmmm
@@nickstevenson9091 I worked for my friend at the gold mine in the 90's. Gold price was around 300 dollars an ounce back then. I'm disabled now, so no I don't work and when I did work at the gold mine. I got a pay check not a percentage of the gold. And my friend found pounds of gold some where else. He still has it. He said, he isn't going to spend millions to find more when he already has million, he said it's a waste of his money.
This is extremely helpful. Thank you so much.
Glad it was helpful!
Damn Chris this is such good information..Any new gold seekers should benefit greatly from this. I think the information conveyed in this video is spot on. Very enjoyable to watch. Thank you!!!
Thanks. Glad you enjoyed it.
PERFECTLY SAID (TRUE)
Thanks. Glad you enjoyed it.
I always remember the lady who found a sizeable nugget in the parking lot in Stanton.
Its happens! Its not common but gold travels and isnt always in the streams.
I remember that story too.
I am a member of a club The Central Coast Gold Prospectors. Geatest folks! But.....one member found a finger sized nugget just stuck in the side of a newly plowed road. He later found a few pickers. WOW, he was a natural! Right, he went the I can be rich, quit job, bought claim, the whole nine yards. He now commutes for and hour+ to work every day.
Interesting.
Another great video for educating novice and not so novice prospecters. Keep up the good work Chris.
Thanks, will do!
Lately I’ve found all of my gold at my local coin shop. It works every time.
Kind of expensive though.
@@ChrisRalph
Not as expensive as loading up the truck and getting skunked repeatedly. I like results. I buy silver regularly and gold occasionally. It’s way more than I will ever find living in Utah.
As newbie in the hobby of not finding gold- a little reverse psychology for life and luck - I would like you to know that I REALLY appreciate your videos and your knowledge, and your willingness to share it with the rest of the world. I hope that the rest of your subscribers feel the same way, and I look forward to your new videos, and enjoy watching your past ones. If I accidentally do find any of the yellow stuff, I'll be sure to remember you. Thank you for all you do.
Thanks and best of luck to you 👍
Thanks Chris. A good appraisal of the prospector life.
Glad you enjoyed it
yeah I pan an area that is really popular. people running dredges all that. I still get a decent little amount. nothin spectacular at all but I'm just in it for fun and collecting purposes. Gonna go scout some new spots though. I live in a mining district with an okay history lots of old inactive claims to check out.
The exploration for new spots is fun.
I've had a lot of luck with gemstones, including a diamond, but gold has been tricky, only a few flakes so far.
A note to motivate people. When you are making money off of prospecting, you are a 1st stage economic producer. Meaning your work adds literal new value to your local -all the way up to- your global economy.
Both gold and gemstones are great to find.
Chris , thanks for sharing your professional lifelong knowledge with ordinary people willing to learn from listening. I am confident your book is invaluable. Other prospectors teach very similar details ( speaking only of those very few willing to mentor the novice). And knowledge is very powerful as anyone seeks GOLD. If were living where shiny states were i would participate as a hobby. May the Lord provide health and prosperity always for you and family I enjoy learning all about prospecting for AU.
Thanks my friend for the very kind words.
That expression of chris is priceless.
Like he was hearing our comments right away.
So chriss must be santa if he knows were being naughty.
For xmas two punds of gold
That expression is to convey what I am thinking when people tell me one of these lies described in the video.
I Have learned a lot of knowledge and experience from you and your advice on your videos and I will continue to watch love every video thank you
Thanks! I appreciate that
😊great video as usual Chris thanks for the talk you gave a the Comstock club a few months ago hope you come again
I'm usually at the club about twice a year. Glad you enjoyed the talk.
Yes my wife and I really did
Hi Chris another great video, do you have any videos on identifying pgms or how identify pgms have some ore I've crushed and have a metal that I cannot identify, thank you
I have a couple videos on PGMs and PGM ores. Look though my old videos.
Hi Criss I love your common sense, which isnt common! I have passed by tons of river rock discarded threw dredging activities. I often think why dont i checked the rocks. I never have. Have you thought or doing that? Also if you have then what was your take on that?
Yes, in some places the discarded cobbles can have gold. But in most places it is a tiny, tiny percentage.
My favorite is gold is where you find it.
Apparently that person is correct but very incorrect at the same time.
To find gold you have to go where gold has been found before.
This may improve your chances but still no guarantees to get any gold.
I appreciate this video and thank you for sharing.
I'm a member of the GPAA and I'm glad I joined. It didn't give me anything but education and places to practice. That's worth it's weight in gold
Its a correct statement but it contains no useful information.
I took a sample today and found about 2 specs. not bad considering i barely made a dent into a old dirt pile from what i think was an old copper or iron mine area.
Maybe keep searching to find a pile that can give you 10 specks in a sample. Two is a start.
Lol talk about roads some of the culverts are perfect sluice box . I did it in the state of Maine even though I found less than a gram but it was a blast.😊
Many culverts are too smooth and too steep to do a good job of catching gold.
do you have a video on the legal aspects of prospecting ?
There are different laws in each state of the US, and in each state of each country for other countries. It would take many, many videos to cover all the possibilities, and then laws change, so they would all need to be updated regularly. And besides, I am not a lawyer and I cannot be giving out legal advice.
Many years ago I dedicated a full summer to prospecting. 6-7 days a week. I was on the Arkansas River in B.V. Colorado. I found gold everyday. At the end of the summer I had 0.05g 😂 flour gold SUX. A few years after that I was in Washington ( west coast) and had the chance to mine on an old guys claim. After two week I had collected 0.05g. So the lesson there was location. Go to the areas where bigger gold is found. I still love to prospect, but I wouldn’t try to make a living off it
I know folks who have found ounces of fine gold in rivers similar to the Arkansas in CO. In a big part its about knowledge and experience to dig in the right places.
The old timers got it all !!!!!!! They Mean Gary !!!!! LOL
I've seen Gary get gold in places that Gary worked previously. Even Gary misses stuff sometimes.
@@ChrisRalph Yep !!!!! I've got a few he missed
10 Lies that are the absolute TRUTH !! 😂 Great value here. I've seen many of these instances myself. In many places, the old-timers mined out the easy material, but left good areas behind. I'm personally in that situation. It also makes me wonder whether the recovery today is about the same as in their era ? The only difference is modern equipment. 🤔 As for #5, they can save half that money and get my machine. Lol !! We'll done, Chris ! Thanks for sharing. 👍⛏️⚒️🤠
The old timers never had a machine like the gold rattler wash plant you are making. In some places, dry washing works well, but in others its a real dud. In those places it was a dud, there was little the old timers could do.
That's correct. With today's equipment, prospectors can certainly take advantage of it. It's still out there ! 😂
Hi Chris, you often talk about the research you do - would you ever do a video explaining how you do this research? What sources you use and what you look for would be very valuable information...
Great suggestion! I plan to do some of that coming up.
@@ChrisRalph Thank you so much!!! My research skills are improving, but I still struggle to get ahold of the proper old reports. I am excited to see such videos, it was my biggest question after reading your book.
Republic mining club in Southwest Oregon is a great and affordable mining club. They have at least 30 claims I think.
That sounds great, and anyone in the area should join.
Do people go trout fishing to get ritch and retire selling fish ? :) Good show
Some larger commercial fishermen do OK, but not individuals.
I am a dreamer. An armchair adventurist ! . Great advice Chris. I like detecting but i seldom go out. I can find a little gold in stream that have gold . The reward isn't the gold. My reward is enjoy the nature. The wonderment of how beautiful the planet is. The fact i can enjoy my time. I've found very little gold. Gold fever is real . Many a life has been chasing the dream. Many people have ruined there lives with gold fever. Beware of gold fever and seek balance and enjoy life every day that you can . Knowlege is success. Practice perseverance. Never loose your child like wonderment. We are all miracles of creation .
Hello my English is not very good but i would like to ask. which machine according to your experience can detect up to 30 or 40 meters below the surface. I m from Africa we use local way to find gold but if we could gate good metal detector hope will help. most of metal detector only can see to the surface only.
There are no detectors which go that deep.
@@ChrisRalph Thank you for your reply i wos watching you vedeo about thabest detector GPZ7000. I will try to see if I can buy.
Precisely.
][>“It is extraordinary how severe storms disperse safe harbor ballasted with gold" ?
Who says that?
Im confused by the statement safe harbor ballasted with gold. Reference?
Not only did the old timers not get it all, but their equipment was so bad, that you can find gold the dirt that the old timer had already gone threw. Old tailing piles are usually found right out side of a mine shaft. Gold isn't every where, but if gold was found there in the past then there is still gold there. I recommend looking in the rock layer in the bank of a creek in an area gold has been found or in a creek running out of an area where gold was found. Every where is not claimed, but around here old gold mines are claimed by the government and made in to parks, claiming it is a historical site.
I agree.
100% correct !
What is the correct way to stake a lode claim on a 60-70 degree slope with the rim being about 800’ higher?
Claims are staked in plan view (like a map) no matter the topography.
Is there a way i can send you a video of my stones gems i found looks placers im in sw mo
I get quite a few people every day who want me to ID their rock and mineral photos. I do not offer a mineral ID service, mostly because it’s not as easy as you think. Usually, minerals cannot be identified from just a picture. Please watch my videos on how to Identify minerals for yourself. Part 1 can be found here: ruclips.net/video/MpkW58ZeQlc/видео.html and Part 2 can be found here: ruclips.net/video/zOWo49X90gA/видео.html and Part 3 can be found here: ruclips.net/video/_ab5NngRlVw/видео.html - Those videos should answer a lot of your questions.
Have you thought of collaborating with Dan Hurd and / or Jeff Williams?
I've never met Dan, and Dan lives in Canada, and I'm in northern Nevada. Now Jeff is in southern Nevada, I've talked with Jeff, and we have a sort of agreement to get together next time he is up this way.
@@ChrisRalph that's awesome, I hope to see that video when you do!
i was using my nox 900 (beach detecting) and saw pieces of quartz in conglomerate in san pedro. on a trashy beach. i was kind of in aw that quartz was there. right on the ocean to hot in the desert to look for gold. now. gotta wait. have a good day.
Remember that quartz is the most common mineral on the earth, while gold is very rare stuff. The great majority of all vein quartz has little or no gold. Quartz with lots of visible gold is very rare.
@@ChrisRalph it was the type of white rusty quartz were gold comes from. not to rusty. but the right stuff. have a good day.
The biggest problem is finding some where to sell the gold at gold prices. You can't just take it to a store that says we buy gold because they won't give you the price of gold for it. You will need to find someone who is connected to the stock market, someone trust worthy to get top dollar for your gold.
In some countries it is very difficult. In other countries, it is much easier.
I would join a prospecting club. But we don't have any close to me . Or I would.
If its smelted for purification and melted to bars it's easier to sell.
@@jax2428 That is true it will be easier to sell. If your dealing with placer gold, that is the only way to sell it and get gold prices for it. But if it Crystalline gold you can get more for it than the price of gold, if you find the right buyer.
Ive been searching for 20 years and ive found 1 dollar worth and spent probably 50k in hotels and gear
That why you take a vacation with some prospecting on the side or go camping more. But you sound like a good candidate to join a club
Where in the world are you? Sounds barren. 😅
You are persistent! Try to join a club and read my book, and select some better places to dig.
No gold in the places you're going to..
3:13 😂
Yep, its true.
What is leechi
Maybe you misunderstood something? Leechi does not mean anything.
Caleche?
A sentence with out context is useless
Well not the 1 in Libby Montana as they will not let you do anything but shovel into a trommel as I was a member of this club and they do not teach you anything
OK, all the clubs are not all the same.
I live in Butte Montana and I just joined a prospecting club here and right now they have four mining claims that you can go on and look for gold and they are adding more in the future. Most of the prospecting is done either with a high banker or gold detectors, because there's no water by these claims, but I went out a few days ago with my detector on one of the claims and I found a couple of small picker nuggets and some small fine gold! I don't ever expect to get rich from doing it, but it is a lot of fun as a recreation! 😁👍 If you're interested in joining, the club is called Mining City Prospectors and it only costs $40 a year for membership! They have approximately 80 members from all over Montana! Give me a shout if you would like to join and I can get you the information! 👍
I know alot about gold digging, i use to be married to one
I just bought claims, my fiancee hopes I become a gold digger lol
Our choices have consequences - sometimes ones we are not expecting.
Lie # 11, fossick where the old Chinese did ! they weren't thorough !!
I've picked up gold in places where the Chinese worked.

Can I get a few minutes to talk to you?
I appreciate your interest, but I do not offer any services for personal training, consulting or advisement. I get many such requests and simply do not have time to help all who ask. I do wish you the best of luck, but I am sorry that I cannot offer any help on that level. If you have something simple to ask, you can ask it here and I will answer. If its more personal help and getting involved with a situation you have, I cannot do that.
I think this site is about finding fists of Gold not religion
Its about what I make it about, which is mostly gold, but sometimes Gems and sometimes other things too.
