Great to review the fundamentals, too--I studied with Henry Adler and Morello, but I still review the basics and search for different ways of looking/perceiving stick grip and concepts. It's never too late to deepen one's knowledge.

Your concept of movement as a aid to time and musicality is fantastic. I do that on set with loose elbow swings to literally help find the Swing.

I like Wilcoxon because I enjoy the very open style of his rudimental phrases. I dislike Pratt somewhat because he forces you to play much more closed on many figures, which I have a personal distaste for. You can play Wilcoxon closed if you want, but you can’t play Pratt more open, the phrases don’t work. I also like that I can interpret Wilcoxon with ancient rhythms as well as the ones on the page. It’s just so versatile.

are those sticks stained for appearance, or do they look different for performance purposes?

I think they are treated with fire

they probably are made of a darker exotic wood that is naturally darker in appearance.
