  • UK actor/singer Dennis Waterman gives an assured rendition of 'Water Under The Bridge' from the 1982 stage musical Windy City, in the lead role of top newspaper reporter Hildy Johnson (which he originated). Johnson suffers a series of mishaps culminating in a prison sentence for knowingly harbouring a criminal, which is where he sings this song, viewing his life, hopes, and future with bitter cynicism. This performance is from a 1990s UK TV show entitled Showstoppers. Windy City was a truly vibrant exciting musical and the characters portrayed by both Dennis Waterman and Anton Rodgers played off of each other to perfection. The cast which included a virtuoso spot by Diane Langton were also highly exhilarating with some standout performances and songs.

Saw Dennis perform this when he starred in the Musical Windy City in London, he was fabulous! It was a great show, played the LP in my bedroom many many times afterwards ❤️

Thanks for posting. Used to bunk off school to see this. Twice with Dennis in the lead and once I think Jeff Shankley covered him, excellently. Great set by Carl Toms not to mention Victor Spinetti, Diane Langton and of course Anton Rodgers. But the score ! OMG. I can hear Ray Charles doing his southern feel on this fab tune. RIP Dennis. I hadn't realised you'd left the party.

Thanks very much for this valuable info, which I'll add to my description above. I can well remember seeing him perform it in the TV show, but had forgotten what the show's title was.

I have the soundtrack to this musicl on CD. I was curious about it because I'm a big fan of the play it's based on. After hearing that, it made me all the more curious about the rest of the play, especially since, according to the cast list, there were characters not even in the original "Front Page". Alas, the play's script isn't commercially available.
