One of my all-time favourite musical theatre songs, performed by one of my all-time favourite musical theatre singers, who doesn't merely perform it - he enters it, lives it, becomes it. When he sang this in Lake Tahoe a while back, the whole audience was in tears. I’ll never forget that concert.
I first saw him perform this song on the Regis Philbin show. He sang beautifully and emotionally, and teared up at the end. I remember Regis said " Wow, here he is, The Phantom, crying, he really gets into his songs!" I thought that Regis was just being Regis, but have become a Michael fan ever since. This is my favorite of all his songs.

First time I heard this song was back in 1994 and it has been one of my favorite songs ever since. Can't help to shed a tear or two everytime I song along.
I know that feeling so well - some songs reach directly into our hearts if performed expertly, and this one, when sung by the likes of Michael Crawford here, is one of them.

I've loved this song (and Michael Crawford) for years, but I've never heard of the musical "Brownstone." I would love to know the story behind this song.
The musical focuses upon five characters living in close proximity to one another in four apartments (two of the characters are a married couple) within a converted NYC brownstone (townhouse) and their interactions with one another, and is almost entirely sung throughout. One of them, the ditzy, extrovert Claudia, is recovering from a relationship break-up, and it is she who sings When You Stayed Here, in Act 2, reflecting upon what her life used to be like when her ex-lover lived with her.
Such a beautifully moving version. Was this from the Des O’ Connor show?
I can't remember now - it was such a long time ago. I just recorded him singing this, nothing else from whatever TV show he was in, sorry.
