Boyds does nice work. I have a couple of their stocks. The Nutmeg stock is a strikingly good looking. I replaced the plastic stock on my stainless 10/22 with a Rimfire Hunter in Pepper laminate.
Great Review ! I've been looking at a replacement for the plain Jane carbine stock. Takeoff sporter style walnut ones on ebay go for crazy money...as much as the gun ! I had actually picked this same one out on the Boyd's website. I just bought a Savage 93 in 17hmr that has the Boyd's thumbhole stock and it's a work of art. I'm glad I came across your review to see what this looks like on the 10/22 before buying it. VERY HELPFUL !!
Great review on this stock. I need to do some upgrades to my 10/22 it's been a standard wood stock since I bought it 18years ago. I don't think it even has 1000 rounds through it.
Thanks buddy! Haha, you are overdue for some upgrades. Especially with ammo and introducing new shooters, .22 LR is hard to beat. The stock is a worthwhile upgrade, especially if you're going to do any serious hunting/precision target work. I've got some Kidd and Volquartsen internal parts, not very expensive and very happy with them too. Keep up the great work on your channel!
Yep, as long as you don't use the barrel band it would be free floated. I believe it would fit without any issues! But might want to check with Boyds just in case.
The Ruger 10/22 stock is better. You wanna put a scope on it anyway.. If you want to use a red dot, go get a Ruger 44 magnum carbine and put it on a that.
One thing I think should stop, is the sling swivel stud points on the underside of stocks. They get in the way endlessly. Why not have sockets installed on the SIDES of the butt and forend for QD attachment points? Simple, unobtrusive, out of the way for hands, bags, recoil, etc., and when slung over the shoulder or back the rifle isn't driving studs into one's skin, as well a gun lays sideways on the back because the side of the butt is wide. That's the point at which a strap should interface with a stock. If there's a way, I'd specify that Boyd's would NOT install sling swivel studs. I'm thinking of building a 10/22 using an OEM SS with that nasty cheap hollow polymer stock. Probably upgrade the action, trigger, and mag release to something from Volquartsen, upgrade to this style of Boyd's in my choice of color, and have some checkering, custom LOP for my long arms, and some kind of decent okay scope. I could get into custom barrels with match chambers, etc. but probably not really worth the trouble for a lot of common and bulk ammo.
I 100% agree with you as far as sling placement on stocks go. I have a Blue Force Gear sling loop for the rear of the stock, much better instead of the underside. As far as using sling swivels on the side, it doesn't appear like there's enough wood to reliably hold a swivel screw, but I could be wrong. That sounds like a sweet rig! I do recommend some kind of checkering from Boyds, that's the only thing missing from this stock.
@@ordinary_american Seems I've seen QD sockets for wood somewhere. I know polymer and aluminum skeleton stocks have QD points on the side of the butt and forends.
Mine appears to have been made on a Friday, the brass is distorted from what looks like it was hammered in using a punch, and the whole too tight as the wood is cracked in that area. Hopefully Boyd's can resolve this, literally just arrived roughly an hour ago 😥
Wow, that's very out of the ordinary and uncharacteristic of Boyds. Maybe something must've slipped during assembly. My stock and all the reviews and owners I've spoken were flawless. I'm sure they can replace it.
@@ordinary_american I hope so, I have emailed them along with providing pictures. Sucks cause I have a new bull barrel coming tomorrow, and apart from that it's very appealing to the eye, and yes I watched a bunch of reviews before pulling the trigger as I'd prefer the traditional look over a polymer. Literally got it at my door at 5:45 and emailed them by 6:28. Update * So, they will be sending a replacement as soon as I ship this one back 😁 *
@@ordinary_american They did send a replacement, just got it today, and just sent it back today. Stock was cracked from the grip going forward into the milled out area where it rests. I went through Midway to order this, first time definitely manufacturer error, this time handlers error ( no it wasn't from the shipping handlers either ). The product box was dropped and bent up like an accordion on the buttstock side, must have flopped over and that's how it got damaged, the box the shipping handler had it in had no damages. I tossed in the towel, as much as I love the look, clearly they aren't too durable or having QC issues, so for less money I bought a MagPul one.
Dang, sorry to hear that. That's crazy. It's wood, so yeah it could crack if it gets hit at the right spot, or in this case abused by whoever is handling it. Magpul is solid, it should resist whatever you throw at it. But yes, nothing compares to the look of a traditional wood stock.

The Volquartsen extractor and firing pin are probably the best thing you can do (bang for the buck) to improve the reliability of the 10/22.
Nice! Free floating barrel? Also will a 16" Ruger barrel fit since it's longer?
Yep, as long as you don't use the barrel band it would be free floated. I believe it would fit without any issues! But might want to check with Boyds just in case.
