I strained my right shoulder and its been close to 2 weeks. I plan to go back next week to start back up. Im only 3 weeks in. I hope your shoulder is much better now! 😁
I tried focusing on escaping mount last night and had the best rolling experience since I started jiu jitsu. Not only do I now feel confident escaping mount, it also helped me relax in an absolute crap position which in turn helped me with my claustrophobia/panic/hyperventilating. I don't know if this qualifies as a "click" moment (probably not) but having focus was a gamechanger. Next week will focus on escaping side control. Maybe the week after that, taking over the world. I dunno - we'll see. :)
Chewie, I've been skulking your videos for a while now, and they're pushing me to get back into BJJ. You beautiful creature, you've done it. Your consistent quality has always made me remember that I can be doing more, so thank you for keeping me focused on myself. I'd love to see your gym one day.
@@ajflowz5009 I cant really afford a gym at the moment, but I plan on getting some buddies together and sparring with them until I can get into one. Thanks friends!
As a white belt i had my first aha moment when i moved to a gym full of beginners where i could experiment alot more then my old gym where i would get constantly smashed by purple belts.
That's how progression works in any sports. Sometimes, you just get to do things you just don't expect to do on a normal day. The human body is a very strange machinery, it can go to an extreme to the other 5 times in 5 days.
I just started BJJ two weeks ago and I already had some of those aha moments during training but I have yet to experience it during a rolling session. I almost forget everything I learned during rolling except for a few easy and simple locks/grapples. But I've never been more excited than when I roll with someone way higher level than me :)
I can't say I've ever had a clear a-ha moment. The closest thing I've experienced is leaving training realising that I was moving/flowing better than I usually do. Otherwise, it's just felt like quite a long, slow, rocky climb upwards. No big deal - slowly slowly.
Chewey if you see this. Newish to jiu jitsu. Been hitting my gym for a few months I'm one of the bigger guys in the gym not biggest but not small or in the middle either but I have a problem. It's hard to not pull guard because I don't know many ways to takedown (my gymstarts from knees most times) and the guys that are bigger than me just rip right out of my guard. Need some options in a future video maybe? Or a point in the direction of one you already made? Thanks brother.
Can you do a video on how to train at home? My gym that me and my brother go to is closed till further notice do to the corona virus. They are worried about the health of the students and instructors. I understand the concern but I am having fun learning the sport and don’t want to take an extended period of time off.
almost certainly he was rolling with a less experienced player. that's ok too! and, we all, even the more experienced guys, have days when everything just flows so well. the opposite is also true
Hey, are you guys going to practice with all the corona going around? Genuinely curious to hear. I saw Stephen Kesting post, saying it’s not the best idea to be rolling right now. I recently moved from nj/ny to the Midwest and it’s just starting to become prevalent here.
My school is still open. We don’t have any new people coming in for the time being but everyone is respectable enough to avoid coming in if they don’t feel well
Hey Chewy my name is Dax and I started Jiu Jitsu back in 2012 and since then I’ve quit many times always 6 months to a year at a time which has left me behind in my progress I’m a blue belt now I was just wondering how do you stop making excuses to quit and just stick with it I always get really into training for a few months then it starts to decline and I eventually quit again but I always regret quitting and come back. My goal is to one day open up my own gym but that’s gonna be impossible to do if I continue to quit. How do you stick with it for years and still continue to enjoy it every day?
So, my bjj gym just closed down for the next two weeks (at least) becuse of the coronavirus. How do I train without a bjj gym? Or what should I do while the gym is closed? Thanks!
Chewy, here's a funny question... Have you ever been trapped by your own Gi? This has happened to me twice now! The collar gets folded over and pinned between my shoulder and the floor. It stopped my being able to move my arm and I couldn't escape the position I was in. :(
I have been. Eventually you get a sense of the gi as an extension of your body and where it is. Try to be mindful of what they are doing with your lapels during training.
New purple belt here, I had what I thought was a bad day in no gi which I'm better at than with gi. Got caught twice in six mins. Yes, got some take downs and a tap, but after it was all said and done I was a bit upset. I knew it wasn't right to be upset because were all learning and it's a process. So, my consolation to myself was the guy who tap me is a two strip brown belt lol
I'm feeling the same way right now. I'm about 5 months in, I've been training with a few dozen different people, I've learned a lot, and last night I finally felt like was able to put it all together. But then I got smashed by someone who's only been there 3 weeks...doesn't help that he had 50 lbs on me but still
finalcountdown3210 it happens man I’m almost 2 years in and I still feel helpless 90 percent of the time, especially against seasoned vets. it’s so many levels to bjj man. I just acknowledge my growth and stay humble
I can’t seem to get anything to work. Maybe I should just realize jiu jitsu isn’t for me? I get tossed around like a rag doll every open mat and practice. Very discouraging
I remember my first "ah-ha" moment. It was the week I dislocated my shoulder lol
yibitibunny I dislocated my shoulder on my first day of jiu jitsu 😂
@@EH-sp3wk oh no! Hey! At least you weren't discouraged to continue
Sounds like more of an “Ahh! Ahh!” Moment
I strained my right shoulder and its been close to 2 weeks. I plan to go back next week to start back up. Im only 3 weeks in. I hope your shoulder is much better now! 😁
Happy Birthday Chewy!!!Here's to a great 35yrs and 35 more brother.

Every legit school has a blue belt that will humble your ass.. "Ah-Ha" turns into "Oh-No" real fast.
Yes!

Hey! Thank you so much for the message. I'm happy to help! And hopefully we'll meet on the mats someday!
As a white belt i had my first aha moment when i moved to a gym full of beginners where i could experiment alot more then my old gym where i would get constantly smashed by purple belts.
I like the stock market analogy for measuring Jujitsu skills. It reminds me of my surfing skills. The progress is noticed over a couple year span.

Strange machinery indeed!
Happy Birthday Chewy!
Happy birthday Chewy! Thank you for another awesome video.
Thanks brother! Appreciate the comment. Glad you liked the video.
Your videos are the best. You've helped me out majorly.
Glad they help. Appreciate the comment homie!
Great advice from the Chewster as always!!!

The more I learn, the more I realize I don’t know
It's fun in a way! I'm a curious person and there is so much to dive into.
Conscious decision making will bring enlightenment 💕

So was he like
"taaaaake oooon meeeee"
The light bulb moment that means you are improving, if you train with new different people their pattern is unknown to you and it get weird

yea same question
Marcello closed his school
We’ve been rolling at my Humaita school here in NY. Washing hands thoroughly before and after rolling.
My school is still open. We don’t have any new people coming in for the time being but everyone is respectable enough to avoid coming in if they don’t feel well
Mac my gyms open but I’m not going for at least 2 weeks
Those a-ha moments will start coming more frequently and you'll start gaining strips too.

2:05 - In educational theory, Chewie is describing how people develop "automaticity."
Yep! I've talked about this idea in a previous video. Developing automaticity with motor patterns.
I beginning to get a few of theses

David Poulsen do chalisthenics
I'll work on a video for those with gyms that are closed.
I got my first ah-ha this week, tapped 3 guys with armbars and choke 2 losing only one
i would really like to train with you some day man
Hopefully someday it will happen. :)
Feel like I’m hitting my stride with kimura and anacondas been training for 6 months and especially for the kimura it’s becoming muscle memory
It's called punctuated equilibrium.

leave it here or send it by email or IG. Those are your best bets.
I wonder is it normal for me to have that a-ha moment only 1 and a half months in?

😂
4 years in and I am not having those moments. Man I suck. =)
Nope. Just need more training.
If I a ha .. it would be at myself for getting cut in submission
Can’t train because of Coronavirus:/
Sorry to hear that! We'll all get through it though. Keep your head up.
