      I was searching for the best computer monitor in 2022 and a guy in a werewolf mask cut me off in traffic.
      He's a bad driver, I decided.
      EDIT:
      A few people have replied to my comment, so I'll clarify.
      Yes, I was using Google to search while driving. I figured it would be harder for Google to track my location if I'm always driving over the speed limit.
      I did scoff at the guy. When I realized he looked like a werewolf, I assumed he must be from London. It gave me closure and allowed me to look down on him because he was not from the same geographical location as me.

    I remember being in school for marketing around 2004, and in one class we discussed how an up-and-coming search engine called Google just might give the industry giant Yahoo a run for its money. People really liked how simple and streamlined Google was, whereas Yahoo was getting cluttered with ads and irrelevant search results.

      Had to be earlier than 2004. The Google engine had over 60 million pages catalogued in 1999 while in their Palo Alto (Altavista) offices. By 2004 they had the beginnings of the Adsense system churning out money. They'd already bought up Blogger. And Yahoo! officially split up with them. Any marketing program only just then getting on the Google train was half a decade behind.

      The best part of all that is that it is fake. Google literally just spews out a number.
      Do yourself a favor and google ... let's say "potato chips"..
      It'll give you about 558.000.000 results in 0.60 seconds.
      Now if you scroll ALL the way down, and go to the very last page which should be page 25...
      It will show that it actually only found 249 results and that it took multiple seconds.

    • @Huntracony
      @Huntracony 2 года назад +170

      @@OphionTheTitan Yeah, that's interesting. Thing is, Google does index pretty much the entire internet, and half a billion results sounds reasonable. Here's my educated guess for roughly what Google does and where those numbers come from (based on one university course about search engines):
      - Google already has pre-made lists for pages that contain the words 'potato' and 'chips' or synonyms thereof (though in this case it might only be one list for 'potato chips')
      - The intersection of those lists (the amount of pages in both lists) is the half a billion number
      - Google then ranks every one of those pages based on the search query
      - While ranking, it only keeps track of the number of pages it needs (10 for the first results page, 20 for the second, etc.)
      - Afterwards it sorts the results and shows them to you
      This all only takes a little more than half a second on the first results page. You know this is true because, with good internet, Google doesn't take multiple seconds to load.
      On the 25th results page, however, it has to keep track of a lot more pages and sort a lot more, which is why it takes longer (it also just takes longer to load). Beyond that, Google just refuses. It takes them too long and you probably weren't actually interested in the results at that point anyway.
      So the numbers come from somewhere, and it's still impressive, but they indeed haven't assembled and ordered all half a billion results for you in less than half a second, because you don't actually need half a billion results.

    • @VulturHS
      @VulturHS 2 года назад +46

      Then we got ad blockers, and the internet had a golden age from about 2005-2015ish when the ad cancer was in remission.
      And now we're back to ad cancer recurrence. And really the pop up cancer never went away; we just masked it with countermeasures. So maybe it's more like ad AIDS than ad cancer.

Song lyrics were an especially easy to rack up points if people knew even one full line. Now whenever I have a song in my head but can't think of what it is, even using quotes the search results are just whatever song is the most popular/record company pays them the most that has lyrics sort of similar to what I'm searching for 100 times in a row. The trick is to critically analyze posts. One line posts can be ignored, in depth ones are likely more trustworthy. A high end user calling something garbage might mean it's adequate for a budget user, one negative review among hundreds of positive ones is probably a fluke, if two users are arguing over which is best both are probably fine, etc.
      Of course, to keep things complicated, the exact same product from one year might not be the same quality as the exact same product from another year. Also factor in country of origin, varying manufacturers, quality of subcomponents in given years....
      ...At the end of the day, nothing beats a low budget youtuber showing a product on camera. Especially a highly opinionated one that cares more about criticizing brands than marketing them.

      3) The top two non-Ad sites: Rtings and PCMAG again. One with a reputation for unbiased reviews, and the other an Ad site, making the Ad placement extra helpful and relevant.
      4) Not an ad in sight on the Rtings webpage, and only a banner and side scroll for relevant products on PCMag.
