  • #darbarfestival | Carnatic violin exponent Akkarai Subhalakshmi explains the power of South India’s classical music to help the improviser understand other forms of music.
    Learn more about the music:
Akkarai Subhalakshmi is a leading Carnatic violinist. Her grandmother R Sornambal was an expert in harikatha (devotional musical storytelling), and she grew up in the music school founded by her father Akkarai S Swamynathan. She sought to replicate the styles of her Carnatic heroes - GN Balasubramaniam, MS Gopalakrishnan, Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer, TN Krishnan, and Lalgudi Jayaraman (who she describes as ‘God’). Today she performs solo as well as in acclaimed duets with either TM Krishna or her sister Akkarai S Sornalatha.
She speaks out bravely on issues of gender inequality in Carnatic classical: “As female musicians we lose out because of our gender. There are artistes I would love to play for (but) who, I know, would never have a female accompanist”. But she sees music as a uniting force: “Ultimately what binds us are the seven swaras of music. It is what makes music universal even when we cannot speak each other’s languages.”
Recorded at Darbar Festival 2014, at London’s Southbank Centre:
    -Akkarai Subhalakshmi (violin)
    -VV Ramanamurthy (mridangam)
    -G Guruprasanna (kanjira)
    -Kiruthika Nadarajah (tanpura)

People who comment negative don't have any idea of carnatic music. Carnatic music is so vast that any language songs can be put under the tab of a carnatic raaga!!!!!! For eg. Shape of you by ed Sheran comes under the Hindusthani Raagam of BHIMPALAS. CARNATIC singers can sing any type of music in world, can others do the same

It is good to see that Carnatic music is increasingly in the hands of young, talented and intelligent artistes such as Akkarai. It is the likes of Akkarai that can raise the awareness of Carnatic music in the North (where it is sometimes and so wrongly looked down upon) and in the West, where it is almost unknown, in spite being perhaps the richest musical system in the world as far as range of melody and rhythm are concerned.
Just one correction to what Akkarai said which I am sure it was due to unintentional wrong choice of word. When she explained the terms "pallavi", "anupallavi", and "charanam", she referred to middle, upper and lower octave. What she meant was middle, upper and lower swaras of the octave.

    • @vvee4725
      @vvee4725 6 лет назад +4

It's really not looked down on in the various Gaharanas of the North. I don't know where you're getting that from.

What she said about carnatic music is very true. It's very scientific. The exercises that are in a beginner carnatic musician's learning repertoire are so scientifically devised that if one masters them, they'll be able to get the gist of how music works. How Tempo works, how to fit phrases into a taal, relative pitch distances between notes, types of different tempo signatures. This makes the musician universally adept to play/sing/understand any kind of music. I'd tried playing the flute (bansuri) on my own without guidance for about 6 years with no real improvement. However, I decided to learn carnatic music and in 1 year I'm able to play almost any pop music songs without thinking too much about which holes to close for what sound. It becomes second nature. The exercises are so universal that they lend themselves useful to any instrument. It's so amazing that a teaching syllabus that was developed in the 14th century (Saint Purandara Dasa and perfected later on) is still applicable today. It shows that those legendary musicians had a deep understanding of how human neural network works. The way to learn a skill is by repetition. But these repetitions must be in such a way that they are generic and thus lend themselves to any sequences of notes. It's just like learning how to touch type without actually having to learn how to type each word in the english vocabulary.
Indian music is the only form where's importance is given to improvisation, note bending (meend) and ornamentation. All these are tools to make music more impactful. Afterall the purpose of music is to evoke emotions in a person. Carnatic music if properly used can evoke any emotion under a skilled musician. Basically carnatic music makes the musician a virtuoso.

You have elaborated it so beautifully. It's true. I have been listening to Carnatic music since 2001 and I can say that the kind of improvisation and the technique in Carnatic music is so different from that of others. Not to forget practice that goes behind it before one excels in it. Thanks for such an enlightening post Sir.

She's such a remarkable artiste. I always look forward to listen to her, be it a vocal or a violin performance. This is the first I've heard her air her views. Very insightful that the tanam technique can be learnt and improved by listening to Western violinists. I grew up listening to vast array of musical genres, but learnt only carnatic music formally. I used to get a lot of advice on how I should not listen to other music so knowing that artistes of Subhalakshmi's stature are open to learning from other genres really vindicates what I did instinctively as a young man. I am merely an amateur vocalist of course but I believe that the art of appreciation can be quite a sophisticated one too and videos like this are immensely helpful to develop that fine sense of appreciation!

Some people say "If you can play jazz, you can play anything" too.
I don't believe in this kind of statements anymore, because I have seen that being able to play a music style doesn't make you able to play a different one.
I played jazz, but it didn't make me able to play african music, I had to learn it.
I play african music, but it doesn't make me able to play classical music, I should learn it.
If you want to play a music style, you have to LEARN IT, in spite of whatever music style you already know.

:) To understand that, you need to come out of that shell of what music you know. No offence meant, but you should watch this Darbar interview with another great artist D Srinivas where he explains the mathematics in Carnatic music- ruclips.net/video/PVRtDOHqQPw/видео.html
If you agree mathematics is the universal language, you will understand the rest! Enjoy! This is not about which format is great or anything. But accept something which is absolutely great and has been existing in its purest format for thousands of years! Comparing Jazz or African music to Carnatic music is not fair. You can do that with Indian folk music which is in the same genre,to some extent.

Carnatic music is divine and this is GOLD Standard in world music. As Indianess is taking center stage in the world , Carnatic music is central to this transformation ( In fact Indian classical music as a whole). While Social media played very important role in this transformation as we are getting you tube videos of legendary people with superlative performance and videos of raaga explanations -- All are beautiful and I must say , for me this is fulfilling. The satisfaction and sublime feeling you get just listening to Carnatic music is so much just imagine people who are performing . They are GOD for me. One has to bow down to the Saadhanna of these personalities with decades of training and learning,.
If any one develops interest in Carnatic music will slowly move away from film music and those Raps and Lungi dance types. I call those as low level and noise factor.
Ovell all Carntic music purifies mind .

An amazing and soothing Nalinakanthi and Manavyalakinchara in the background. Would love to have that as the main video in the upcoming uploads.
Also, had to mention - the title is misleading, as many people have said. The title should have been "If You Can Play Carnatic Music, You can UNDERSTAND Any Other Genre of Music." Pls, correct that Darbar Team.
Anyway, the video is too good. Thanks for the upload. Also expecting the correction of the misleading title of the video.
    Thanks

In reply to Minor Third: Yes, the Carnatic raga naLinakAnti is very similar to the Hindusthani raga tilak kAmod. Scale of naLinakAnti is
sa ga ri ma pa ni SA
SA ni pa ma ga ri sa
ri, ga, ni are all tivra (sharp) and ma is shuddha. as opposed to tilak kAmod, dha is not used and some musical phrases are different. Subhalakshmi plays Thyagaraja's celebrated kriti, "mana vyAla kincha rAdaTe' ". From 12:10 - 12:20, she plays the scale of the raga (intermittently) in different speeds and in various ways

If you can play 'abc' music you can play any music...true in a way, but it is not exclusive for one particular music style. When you already have an understanding of music and some experience making it, you will find it easier to adapt to different styles. There is nothing you cannot 'learn' to do, how long it takes or how much effort you'll have to put in is a different story.

What a beautiful interview with the backdrop of Nalinakanthi, and yet you had to put this tired and conceited title of "If you can play Carnatic Music, you can play anything"! If you can dance the Barathanatyam, you can dance anything, if you can drive in India, you can drive anywhere, if you can survive in Mumbai, you can survive anywhere, blah blah blah... enough of the nonsense -- just stick to sensible titles and not click baits. Don't spoil the interview with unnecessary drama!

We have received so much muck from our northern brothers. Now you find none can play in the southern style without immersing themselves in the style of music.
She is not saying we are superior. You just bring her to accompany a northerner and take it as a challenge. Between two styles of music and accompany each other,
