I enjoyed both your music and lyric analysis, including commentary on Adele's vocal delivery and techniques. Adele really has a powerful and expressive voice. Interesting observations on those qualities you are noticing in modern melodies. Adele must have got her "California Dreaming" phrase from the Mamas & Papas hit song of that name. I hope you get a chance to hear this 1966 folk rock classic, which will show what was popular from America at the same time as the Beatles were dominating the charts. Great closing remarks on finding good contemporary music that is still popular. I'm glad that you enjoyed this so much. Great reaction!
Yes, while I thought that Ms Virgin Rock might have been over-reaching with the interpretation of "Hell-o", there is no doubt that beyond the fine technical qualities of her voice, Adele conveys clearly the pain and the longing that the failure of this relationship has brought her...
The fact Hello still holds the record for fast video to reach 1 billion views on RUclips almost 10 years later tells us the chokehold it had on the world when it came out
This actually gave me a way better appreciation for how the instrumentation builds throughout the song! I guess I never really specially noticed because it all flows so seamlessly, but to actually stop and listen to each instrument was very cool!
That intake of breath at the end does me in. There is no way for me to ignore her voice. It completely captures my attention. She transmits such intense emotion. It isn't a type of music I listen to at all, but she is amazing.
Adele made her American debut on SNL. I never watch SNL but happened to be watching that night. It was unforgettable and I became an instant fan. The audience loved her, and her response was just adorable and so humble. In my entire life, I can't think of another artist that I responded so strongly to so immediately.
I heard that Adele was totally shocked when this song became a hit. It's s simple song with a deep meaning and it resonates with everyone. I really love Adele's music. One of my favorites from her is "Hometown Glory". It beautiful melancholy nostalgia. Another good one is "Easy On Me". I hope you listen to both of them.
I think the simplicity of the lyrics is what made it such a successful song. Anyone could relate and feel like the words were pulled from their own thoughts. Sometimes, our raw emotions are the simplest ones.
Nice catch with the renaissance pavan rhythm! I hadn't spotted it, but now it made me reach for my lute and play some of John Dowland's Lachrymae (seriously). What an appropriate setting for such a wistful song. Probably coincidental, but artistically connected at an unconscious level. BTW there is a deliberate lyrical reference to the 1960s song California Dreaming by the Mammas And The Papas, which I think you would appreciate too.
One of my favorites... Adele, singing, "When We Were Young" LIVE at the Church Studios in London, while she was sick with the flu. A brilliant performance. Never get tired of it. I admire her voice & songwriting - Love me some Adele.♥️
Adele also does some more "up tempo" songs. "Set Fire to the Rain" is one of my favorites! The other thing about Adele is that when she performs live, she uses REAL instruments - she always has a string section. :)
I think that when Adele’s song Hello crescendos what she’s really expressing is her anger at not actually being able to talk to the other person. She even says so in the song. “I must have tried to reach you a thousand times to say I’m sorry.” And then when she says, “At least I can say that I've tried To tell you I'm sorry for breaking your heart, But it don't matter, it clearly doesn't tear you apart anymore.” The whole song is, not just about her guilt over their breakup, but also her anger because she can’t reach him and apologize for what she did.
Adele hit this song "out the park!" Her tone, pitch, and power are absolute Perfection!! On the LP recording around 3:37 into the song where she goes up high in the range is just chilling.
You could spend a wonderful moment hearing Adele using her instrument. I envy you getting to hear her portfolio for the first time, she is a master of musical expression.
Hello! I am a new subscribe, I don’t have any knowledge about music, but youtube recommended me your channel and now I am binge watching your videos! It’s 1am here in italy❤
Ah, yes! I recognized this immediately when you sang it "Lascia ch'io pianga". I majored in Voice in college. This was one of my favorite songs I sang 🎶😍🎶
I waited until 19.53 for Amy to declare: "Its really beautiful, isnt it?" Now I cannot remember her saying this before on other reactions, however rich the emotional vein is in the music, as some truisms are so difficult to say, especially for academics. And this reaction is all the better for her saying it..........
Thank you for your deep and rich analysis of songs binding lyrics content and melodies structure. I would appreciate that one day you'll review and react to one of the songs of American rock group BRUCE HORNSBY AND THE RANGE, notably their single THE WAY IT IS. I'm very grateful to you madam.
I'm a metalhead 1st. My dig is usually thrash metal or death metal, but I enjoy many musics and artists. Adel is one of those artists who affects my writing and musical style. Her delivery is so powerful and clean, and so well written. I love Adel.
If you're a metalhead, you absolutely must go watch Leo Moracchioli (Frog Leap Studios) do a metal cover of this song if you haven't seen it already. It is an absolute masterpiece.
I loved her concert at the Royal Albert hall earlier in her career. I heard she’s taken a long break in her career maybe even retired but I would think an artist like her would find it hard to stop writing songs.
I can't believe you managed to review two songs in a row that also happen to be my favorite heavy metal covers by Leo Moracchioli! Unlike Africa, which I love both songs equally, I have a very clear favorite with Hello. Leo Moracchioli's cover is by far and away favorite between the two. I cannot express how excited I would be if you did a review/reaction of his cover of this song! I beg of thee! Oh! If you want more songs that have artistic depth and are not just surface level gratification, I would recommend Hero of War by Rise Against. I don't think I can listen to that song without crying.
The expressions on your face evoke an audio sommelier. I hear the same sounds as you, but you can tell me about reasons why it works or doesn’t. Well done 🎧
Can't Live if Living is without you. I can't live, I can't give anymore....... Without You, Nielson, 1971. That's a powerful song. So it goes back a long way.
I always found this song so incredibly moving as I interpreted ‘the other side’ as referring to the veil between life and death. In my mind, the person to whom she is singing has died.
I agree... that's what I had initially thought as well. But then I the more I listened, I felt as though it was more of being on the other side/outside of happiness and closure.
I disagree … if it were a person that passed on she wouldn’t have referenced California. I think she’s on the other side of his heart or his life and it feels like a million miles away. She switches back and forth between “hello from the other side “ and “hello from the outside”.
I think often, the songs that are the most powerful for people are the ones in which every element (melody, rhythm, vocal tone, tempo, lyrical balance, everything) is used in service to the emotion being conveyed -- even to the point of completely breaking the "rules". When the emotion comes first and everything else is simply and fully in service to that expression, I think that's when music becomes something greater the the sum of its parts and affects people in ways that defy description.
It is the ladies who will save us from this auto tune nightmare inflicted upon us… It started with Amy Winehouse… Adele followed… Billie Eilish may continue along that path… Real voices in the spirit of Aretha… My first true love…
I wish I could hear the 3 4 meter but I can only feel it in cut time - will keep trying. I think your impression of the delivery sounding as though it’s a deep “sob” is really interesting! I can now hear that also. Thanks again for another interesting listen!

Thank you Amy, for your insightful description of this song. You always teach me something new. I always thought this was a better song than the first one of hers you analysed. Her singing on this one was more interesting than on the one you did before, but again I'm not a fan of Adele's because I find her voice a bit boring. My personal preferences are not for pop music, I tend to find rock, jazz, classical and even country music much more interesting. Also, the sad thing is the corporate music industry does not promote lyrical topics that are very interesting and the "Oh, poor me" genre of unrequited love reigns supreme.
I'm all over the place when it comes to music tastes and love a bit of Adele, however I'd Love to find out your views on dance, particularly "Strobe" by Deadmau5 (full version not radio edit). It's a really interesting bit of edm, it's not chart dance, very much for dancing to or letting wash over you in contemplation. Deadmau5 is a really interesting producer and makes lots of his own hardware and software to create the sounds he's after.
Agreed. Karen Carpenter had IMO a much better more iconic voice than Adele and she could also in the process hear one of the greatest drummers that ever existed. lf you have never watched Karen play a drum solo you have been missing out.
@dennish.7708 He chooses her music, The Carpenters may still have a copyright restriction on their music , hmm need to ask my old brother inlaw , John Bettis, he wrote alot of her songs ( rock n roll HOF , )
Hello, I recommend you listen to Muse - Exogenesis Symphony Full Muse are one of the most innovative bands of the past 25 years, incorporating classical, progressive, alternative, and other subgenres in their music. In this case Exogenesis Symphony is comprised of 3 parts, and as the name suggests, it is classical/operatic sounding. Each part is unique but at the same time add up to tell a full story, one I think you might really enjoy.
Your interpretation of Adele just imagining a phone call to an ex and what she'd say is interesting. I picture this whole song just a voicemail she left on her ex's phone that he never picks up.
Yesterday, when Amy was comparing Adele to other musicians, all I could think of was Linda Ronstat! (I can never remember how to spell her last name) Adele went to the BRIT school, which is similar to Julliard. The classical and Renaissance references are quite possibly intentional. I don't understand why all the music reactors act like female artists just by and large don't exist. Its sad, and a problem. I hope Amy continues to discover the countless female artists that all seemingly are ignored. How about some Natalie Merchant? Perhaps some Sarah McLaughlin? Tori Amos? Bonnie Raitt? Janis? Heart? Annie Lennox? You get the udea.
yes, Adele is indeed a very effective pop singer....saw you have 1 on nick cave too....i recommend just about any piece from his "dig, lazarus, dig!" album.....some other artists you might like: Lord Huron, Mother Mother, Gang of Youths, Alec Benjamin, Jann, Ladytron, The Walker Brothers...some new and some not so new...i like that you mix it up like that.
If you want something that is totally out of your scope, try Kasey Chambers and her version of Lose Yourself (Eminem cover). Its not rap, she does sing the whole song. Kasey is basically a country / folk artist with a bit of rock thrown in, so the result is definitely different to the original.
It's interesting how you notice the emotional depth to Adele's singing (the very opposite of trite!) Even though she is from north London she has cited Aretha Franklin and gospel as major influences ( this can really be seen in her song "Rolling in the Deep" with it's use of call and respond).
Ever wondered what an organ and Harpsichord combination would sound like in a pop song about opium would sound like?... Listen to 1982 song 'Golden Brown' by British punk band The Stranglers to find out. I don't know of any other music band that's incorporated a Harpsichord into a songs' instrumentals. It's interesting.
Was used a lot in the 60's, Beach Boys multiple times, Beatles, "Monday, Monday" by Mamas and the Papa's, Righteous Brothers, "Scarborough Fair" Simon and Garfunkel, even Michael Jackson in "Got to be There".
There is an artist named Lukas Rossi who did an excellent cover of this song on his RUclips channel that is called Lukas Rossi. He is an intense, deep (and wild) singer, musician, performer who I think made a great choice in making his own video of this song. I am about to go watch it again by him, and I suspect that you would also enjoy his rendition of the song.
I would love to see you react I Drink Wine, such a fantastic song off her last album! Also please check out songs off of brat by Charlie xcx......weird request because it does not fit ANY of your prior reactions, but I think it would be a silly and fun one to watch.
Amy, it's funny how we count this differently from eachother! My whole body is going: 123 123 12, 123 123 12, ... To catch a glimpse of Adele's personality, I believe her 2016 Carpool Karaoke is a nice video to watch/hear.
I’d love to hear you review Angels Like You by Miley Cyrus, it would be so fascinating to hear an unbiased review of her art, completely separate from her persona which often clouds people’s judgment.
Adele collaborated with Gregory Kurstin on this piece and while I know nothing about music I strongly suspect she provided the voice and the lyrics and he provided the production and arrangements
Thank you for speaking of dance. This could be used as more of a slow Rumba. I would be most interested to hear of your thoughts in future, as a dancer. Thank you 💜🙏
I'm a dancer too and her counting comment about melodic timing bending totally clicked with me. I was counting rumba in my head, lol (hold the one, move on the 2, and bend that timing to Adele's gorgeous melody, lol) I have danced Rumba's to Skyfall too. 😊
I've heard this song many times on radio but, damn, it sounds ten times better listening with earphones. I am really glad that you appreciated this song. There is a good music even today, even in pop genre, but it's very rare. I think you should hear some of those horrible pop/comercial songs that have been released in last decade, for example. You will appreciate even more those good ones. 😂 Anyway, about Adele. Yes, she is an amazing singer, but somehow her voice is too powerful for me. Or maybe I cannot very easily truly fall in love with a vocals. There must be something else as well. Some chemistry. Just like in love. You need to feel the chemistry to be able to fall in love with someone. Well, for me there is no chemistry when I listen to Adele. In fact, for me there is no chemistry when I listen to 99% of the singers in the world (including all music genres). I am very picky person. 😂
Let me suggest you listen to it, you will definitely like it, this guy is the prince of J-pop, just like Ado is the princess of J-pop. Fujii Kaze - "Shinunoga E-Wa" Live at Nippon Budokan (2020)
Yes, it was a reference to The Mamas & Papas btw. My opinion is that it is a beautiful song with great singing and expression by Adele, a great song. But I'm going to give its production a hefty dose of criticism. They have committee studies what worked so well in her prior success hit and try to incorporate them as elements in this song, like they're building the song with musical lego blocks. It's done so well though that the song is beautiful still. They've also picked up on how enamored the public is with Adele's voice and so they aim to prop her voice up (as if it needs that!) and they just try too hard and go too far. In the beginning the piano does sound very clear, crisp and detailed with nuance, Adele's voice sounds too echo'd, totally unnatural, they's not an existing singing space with that much echo. And later it is so blatantly repeater treated, I can clearly hear it. A repeater is like the voice or tone is double tracked or triple tracked but rather than putting the tone on separate tracks there is micro processor equipment that repeats the tone however many times in increments of delay, like repeat it 1/1000 of a second later plus 2/1000 of a second later. You don't hear a repeating but it just makes the tone sound fuller and I can hear it so blatantly, painfully. In the second play of the chorus they really go wild, the sneer drum is so processes it makes an 80's disco song shake in its knees and the chorus has so much instrumentally unrecognizable synthesizer tone filler, creating a wall of sound that makes Phil Spector shiver. They do this to give an illusion of dynamic range increase while in truth there's no increase in actual decibels. But it's so over the top that it just muddy's the sound completely. Nothing bad about Adele herself but this production needs a lot of cleaning up.
I would describe the vocal melody as an RnB style vocal. Similar in delivery to something George Michael might have done. I would say that this style of vocal started to emerge in the late 80s I'm thinking of Whitney Houston and later on Beyonce,
Oh wow this is so weird, I woke up today with this song going around in my head. I haven't thought about it since probably 2018. What a strange coincidence, huh?
Areas in London and England are very close knit. It's like family. We love her, she's family the same as other bands and singers in other parts of the country. Adele was trained at the same music school as Amy Whitehouse. ❤
Amy, the piano is on the One and the “and” of two…. This is in 4. More akin to the common Afro Caribbean pulse, half of a Cuban Clave, or the Bo Diddley rhythm. So common in modern Pop. Man you really are new to modern music 😂 I love you and Vlad for doing these. Your intuition about the emotional content of music is something vastly missed in today’s normal music lover that just listens to the beat…
This rythmic technique of a strong down beat followed by a weak pulse on the up beat that lets you anticipate the next down beat (the 3) originated in African folk/ dance music. The up beat makes you step your feet on the 3 when you’re on the dance floor.
Female vocals Suzi Quarto Your Mama Won't Like Me. A funky banger from an ig rocker chick and bass player. Heart Magic Man Archenemy eagle flies alone Babymetal headbanger legend 97 live Kate Bush Running up that hill and wuthering heights
Adele's syncopated phrasing in the opening is immediately grabbing of attention. At some points she's moving counter to the 3 beat, itself syncopated, creating a lot of motion in a simple structure. The chorus may be the hook, but the stanzas are where this song lives. Going from Em to G/D is only a small step, but not that common. It continues to progress chromatically, resolving on C, and retaining the D through two steps.
Great closing remarks on finding good contemporary music that is still popular. I'm glad that you enjoyed this so much. Great reaction!

Lord Huron, Mother Mother, Gang of Youths, Alec Benjamin, Jann, Ladytron, The Walker Brothers...some new and some not so new...i like that you mix it up like that.
Adele wrote and sung the signature of the Bond movie "Skyfall". Would love to see your reaction on that please.
Because the song is in 4. The Piano is hitting on 1 and the offbeat of 2.
I’d love to hear you review Angels Like You by Miley Cyrus, it would be so fascinating to hear an unbiased review of her art, completely separate from her persona which often clouds people’s judgment.
Songs with similar vibes are ELO Telephone line, Jim Croce Operator and Tom Waits Martha
I was counting rumba in my head, lol (hold the one, move on the 2, and bend that timing to Adele's gorgeous melody, lol)
I have danced Rumba's to Skyfall too. 😊
Wait to you hear 'It's all coming back to me ' by Celine Dion 😍
Adele does seem to genuinely be everyone's cool aunt, no matter how old one is.
Anyway, about Adele. 😂
Would love to watch your reaction to Adele's All I Ask.
when we were young
Adele - Set Fire to the Rain - Live at The Royal Albert Hall
I would say that this style of vocal started to emerge in the late 80s I'm thinking of Whitney Houston and later on Beyonce,
The second chord is not on 2 but on 2-and.
9:18 Shame Amy hasn't heard "California Dreaming" prior to this.
i feel like this piece is an anthem for the 12-step program, but I'm an alcoholic so...yeah
She is from the east end of London
No live reaction?
I'd recommend Easy On Me if you get a chance.
I don’t hear triumphant. I hear frustration and anger.
Please do Kesha “Praying.”
Female vocals
Suzi Quarto Your Mama Won't Like Me. A funky banger from an ig rocker chick and bass player.
Heart Magic Man
Archenemy eagle flies alone
Babymetal headbanger legend 97 live
Kate Bush
Running up that hill and wuthering heights
P.S you are so much fun!!!
This is a song to her younger self.
