  • Join me as I use Neocolor 2 to create a background in one of the beautiful Summer Nights images.
    Colors used:
    Van Dyke Brown
    Toledo Brown
    Sanguine
    Light Ochre
    Golden Yellow
Flesh - I actually go over this color with golden yellow, so rather don't use it if you're copying me.
If you're keen to try the Neocolor 2's here's an associate link for a smaller set:

Hi Liz, I have both Neo IIs and watercolors & stumbled with both quite a bit when I started using them. I followed tutorials & practiced with my watercolors more but to get the really lovely watercolor effects without caking them on, I find I need more watercolor paper (even though Hannah Karlzon paper does do well with water). Neos look best (in my opinion) with layers and full coverage before water as they don't move like watercolor. For me, I have realized, I enjoy mixing media on my coloring pages (watercolor, Neos, watercolor pencils, inks, colored pencils, etc) & depending on the look (and paper) a Neo may work better than watercolor and vice versa. All this to say use the media you enjoy but getting out of your comfort and experimenting may lead you to find new loves even if they don't takeover #1 spot. There's also value in knowing what you don't like once you've given it a very good try. Then you don't spend any more $ on that and have more $ for what you like. Buying a small set like you did with the Neos is a very smart way to experiment. My Colourful Country Life uses Neos quite a bit and has a "how to" for tips. Thanks for your video. Oh and you must film the style of video that works for you (zoom or not). You will never make everyone happy so don't fret about it. 😊 I forgot to mention the image looks great!

Thanks so much for the lovely and really interesting comment. I will check out her channel, I haven’t watched it yet, and I’m planning on doing more with my Neo 2”s. I also love mixed media and totally agree on watercolor paper being the best for watercolors, sometimes though, it’s nice to use them in a coloring book. I really appreciate your comment. Thank you.

Hi, Liz I originally started watching you because I have been glue booking this winter, but now I am shifting toward doing an art journal. I haven't watched your coloring before. Two things have brought me to this video. I decided to do some coloring this weekend and I love Neocolor II. I have only played a little with them last fall and would love to see you use them more. I also have played a bit with watercolors and have no preference as of yet. The coloring I did this weekend was with alcohol markers, colored pencils and glitter pens. I am planning on adding gems and possibly some other embellishments when I finish up the 10 pages I am planning to do. These are whimsical, juvenile style pages. I don't have much experience. I very much enjoyed your coloring today. Now I understand why people watch coloring channels. I will be watching both coloring and glue booking from now on. Nancy

Hi Nancy, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and feedback, I feel so encouraged when I get comments and it encourages me to make more videos. I will definitely do a few more neocolor videos. I have used gems on some of my coloring pages and love the look. I find though, that when it’s in a book, it makes coloring on a facing page difficult, so sometimes need to print pages that I want to embellish in that way, then keep then a flip file.

@@LizatHome It is in fact my intention to keep mine in a binder. The main point of my first art journal is to learn about all the materials I own. I am going to put dividers between most of the pages to protect them from each other until I know what needs sealing. I also want to write on the dividers what materials I used and where I got the inspiration (if I know). I am 71 and just having a good time. Looking forward to your next video.

I don’t mind when you zoom in. As long as it’s not zooming in and out over and over again fast. Not that you’ve ever done that.
Thanks for sharing bow you use the Neo IIs.

I’m happy to have found you! Please don’t stop creating your videos! I’d love to learn more about how you treat your finished pages (and whether you have to perform steps between to preserve the step you do your video on…for example, after you finished the background here, do you have to apply a fixative? If so, how is it applied in a manner that it doesn’t affect the unfinished portions. In a previously watch video of your works over the past months, you used something to protect a page you completed - what was that? It sort of looked like parchment paper?

Hello Penny, I didn’t need to use anything on this page to preserve it. The only thing that may possibly transfer to the facing page is the glitter from the stickles, but if the facing page gets a little more glitz, it doesn’t bother me too much.
I used a piece of parchment paper on the last page I used, it’s actually from an air fryer paper liner that I cut down lol. I was a little worried that the glitter or paint may transfer a little to the facing page which I hadn’t yet colored. I don’t think it will, but I was just taking precautions. I only ever spray pages where I have useful soft pastels, and then I usually only spray them once the image is completed. I use grumbacher workable fixative to spray, and you’re supposed to be able to work on top of it, but I haven’t as yet. I will pop over to Amazon to get you a link. A lot of people like the Krylon workable fixative, but I have had it kind of dissolve the ink on details that I’ve used a fine liner for, and then that’s bled through to the other side. This doesn’t happen with the grumbacher. It’s not necessary to use a fixative with color pencils or water color, or acrylic paint, as far as I know. I’m not a professional artist though, just a self taught home colorist.
Here’s the link for the fixative:

Just one more note… u asked about zooming, I need you to zoom, and like that you don’t go in-out-in-out, you’re doing good with your zoom timing (in my opinion)
I’d like to request a video on coloring with stickles as well. I used them once to give a butterfly life/movement…I honestly loved the effect but my butterfly wasn’t nearly as clean as yours. I hadn’t used them before, but have collected a bit of a collection of them because I love the colors so much!
I wondered whether Hanna’s books are 1-sided pages, and if your work on the sunflowers, and this lady affected the image on the other side of the page?
Lastly, whenever you mention using something (even if it’s the black you used to do a background but has nothing to do with what you’re video is going to address, can you just note what you used and the name/code of the color - same as you’re doing with the materials used for the focused upon topic, please?
Thank you very much for allowing us access to you!!

You’re welcome. I’m pleased that the zoom I am doing is fine for you. I will try to remember to note what I use, if it’s not in the video. I just don’t always remember, sorry. The Watercolor I used on the sunflowers page did spoil a bit of the page behind, but not badly. I had used masking tape on the page behind. I can try and share another watercolor background, but it’s messy and sometimes quite difficult to film. I get quite stressed filming them.
The Hanna Karlzon books are double sided, so, images on both sides of the page.
I finished coloring the full book of Daydreams by Hanna Karlzon, so if you watch that video, you’ll see the format of her books:

I’m not an expert on them, but I will do another video on them, perhaps not a whole image, more a chat and ‘how to use’ type of video.
How did you use them? With a water brush? Or with a normal paint brush and water?
