  • Holy moly this Dragons Dogma long form analysis/ retrospective/ gameplay/ talkthrough/ impressions/ commentary thing was loong overdue…
    Sorry for the long wait but I sincerely hope this was worth the wait for you guys! This was a fun project although I think I stressed more than I should’ve. Real life has made it difficult to take time off to work on this so that is the reason why this is almost half a year in the making.. Also yes. It turned out to be a bit longer than one hour. I guess that + was bigger than anticipated lol.
    I know this is not quite a retrospective in the traditional sense, but I wanted to do something different. And after getting Private Sessions’ blessing to do this after seeing his Skyrim retrospective it kinda just snowballed into this mess.
    I have however been super lucky with friends that have helped me out during this project. My best man has watched through this vid several times to help me pick out and fix minor things and giving me ideas etc. Spoogie Derpington has also been super helpful during this time. So a huge shoutout to him as well. Thank you for being my therapist when I’ve needed to vent lol.
    Also I know I’ve glossed over a lot of stuff in this vid. I just covered what I felt was most interesting and entertaining. Also the Bitterblack Isles was not even in my mind during this. I just wanted the “vanilla” game. Maybe Chad and BJ will return on a BBI adventure?
    I feel I should clarify why Quina has been captured by Grigori. The game has an “affinity” stat that governs how much npc’s like you. Giving Quina the Blessed flower raised her affinity to max and thus she is our “beloved” as Grigori calls it.
    Also hope you guys like my new avatar and thumbnails. Wanted to do something different.

    Here is what happens in most open world games: As soon as you get access you venture out. You learn the enemies you can beat and those you must grind for. Generally speaking you ignore the story and learn to exploit the world around you until you quickly become overpowered.
    Now here is how that goes in Dogma: As soon as you get access to the open world you venture out. You start surveying enemies and learn the difficulty curve is greater than most. You struggle but find it manageable if you stay away from large enemies or large mobs. Then the nightcycle hits and everything gets oppressive. You run out of oil for your lantern and now you cant see. Your once happy trounce around a new world becomes a horror survival and you hope to just make it through the night. You realize then this game is not to be trifled with. Dragons dogma balances fun, freedom, fear, oppression, skill, ingenuity and survival to name a few in a way you won't be familiar with.

    • @sethchandler4170
      @sethchandler4170 2 года назад +1

      @@Bladezeromus It's not a numbers game. You can kill things incredibly underleveled. The problem I see that people have with Dragons Dogma is the game allows you to become a one man army. If you want you can become an overpowered freight train. That's freedom. There is a lot of time between starting out and becoming OP. The point is the game rewards you for the toil. If I'm going to spend 100 hours or in my case 10,000 hours in a game I better damn well be OP and feel OP. I better damn well have access to massive tornados, falling meteors, massive earthquakes, flashy weapon enhancements to accentuate the perfect feeling of weight and damage in my strikes. To have a spectacle of grandeur to go along with time investment. The combat in Dragons Dogma is the best of any action RPG. It's more than a numbers game. Only a person actively seeking to cheese a game sees it that way and those people play themselves.

      Just because you've fallen for the illusion the game crafted, doesn't mean that everyone has. Dragon's Dogma is objectively a numbers game. The most skilled based move you can make is knowing how long to level as what vocation to get what Stat spread. Laboring while underleveled and undergeared is highly unrewarding, unintuitive, frustrating, unbalanced, and punishing.
      Unless you're playing on Normal Mode. In that case, the game is pretty easy and you can get away with just about anything. On Normal Mode, being good at action games can trick you into thinking that that is what mattered.
      But in Hard Mode? Post game and Bitter Black Isle? How good you are at fighting, dodging, and blocking doesn't much at all. The difference between a fight taking 30 minutes vs 30 seconds is if you have big numbers in the right places. And it's not that rare for there to be just straight up roadblocks in the form of monsters that just refuse to take damage if your damage numbers aren't pumped up over their defensive values. I don't understand how this well know aspect of the game is even in question right now

      Like, bruh, you can see that he was an assassin most of this play through. Why? Because Assassin has, hands down, the highest physical atk growth in the game. And that allowed him to just melt everything in his path, no problem.

    • @sethchandler4170
      @sethchandler4170 2 года назад

      @@Bladezeromus Bruh I put 10,000 hours into the game. I've done it min maxing and not min maxing. It isn't the advantage you are claiming it is. My very first playthrough I did whatever I wanted without thought on growth stats. I just invested in vocations to try them out and get augments I liked.
      I also did the min max thing. The difference isn't that great. In fact the game is more enjoyable when you don't min max. My preferred vocation is Mystic Knight. To min max that you have to play as assassin for a long time and in my opinion the assassin vocation is one of the more boring vocations. I can melt things with my non min maxed Mystic Knight extremely effectively. The reality is you can use peripats to boost any character into way over powered status anyways.
      You thought you were going to bs me? Lol. Nice try buddy but I have invested more time into this game than any other game I have ever played. Min maxing is completely unnecessary. If that's the sort of way you attempt to play games that's your fault. All you are doing is cheapening your experience for very little returns. Some people love min maxing and Dragons Dogma allows that but if you are trying to sell to me that it makes some huge difference I will call you a liar to your face. Come meet my non min maxed mystic knight we aren't scared lol.

    You see, Dragon's Dogma isn't a game where a new player would just hop in and become the lord of destruction and kill everything in one shot. I feel like the lack of fast travel in the game is what actually makes it so good, because without fast travel players are forced to improve and get better as they travel around the map. They would even level up naturally whilst traveling the lands and eventually the player would become better.
    Being forced to travel on feet makes the game a little boring and may ward off new players, but the game mechanics and content far outweigh that. Dragon's Dogma is a game that rewards you for your effort that you put into the game. You have the diversity and ability to build your own character, your Pawn, and create a character who fits your play style. Even now despite having over 600 hours of gameplay in Dragon's Dogma, I still am willing to start over from scrap and highly recommend Dragon's Dogma to others. I grew up with Dragon's Dogma and so it has shaped my taste in games. So, I recommend others to get the game as well, if not for the game, just do it for the experience. I feel like Dragon's dogma has the ability to be loved by everyone who plays it, it's just that they don't give it a chance.

      Travelling on foot forced players to think tactically and plan their inventory carefully before they set off from Gran Soren. Would you trade speed for more healing items, for more survivability? Would you hoard your loots risking being overencumbered and move at a snail’s pace? Or would you trust your adaptability that you can craft essential items on the way? All of these interesting decisions are ruined by free fast travel. Now you can go anywhere, and when you’re low on health, just pop a travel stone, buy supplies and go back. I guess the travelling was considered as tedious because most open world games don’t require you to prepare your inventory before travel.

      I loved the game too, played it for thousands of hours on the PS3, even made 4 accounts to level 200 just to have my own party comprised of pawns I made myself. What stopped me from doing it all again in the PS4 was the way you have to raise characters, stats being tied to certain classes instead of you just distributing it yourself.
      With that issue aside, really loved the game so much while I played it.

    I remember fighting the dragon from the south of Shadow Fort very early on. After 30 minutes of any skill barely making a dent but I knew I still did damage, died with 2 health bars remaining. I tried again, and after painstakingly ignoring my daggers as a weapon during the encounter and just sticking to a shortbow, I finally defeated it. Fast forward to post BBI with a full set of Lv3 gear, that same dragon is essentially a one-shot. So for anyone who wants to start playing the game, ignore an enemy if even after you use your most powerful skill, it just does a pixel of damage, unless you want a very challenging fight right off the bat at least.

    Here is what people don't get about this game: The tedious nature of travel, the burden of getting caught in a night cycle and the streamlined brief main story are all masterful design choices. The story of the game is the relationship between arisen and main pawn. The story is emerging from an oppressive world together and the bond forged through frustration, failure, fear and ultimately teamwork and success. The grueling aspects of this game suck when you are in them. Sometimes it's exhilarating. The story are these shared moments brought to life by a masterstroke of a twist at the ending. It's subtle and requires the player to think to get it and that is Dogmas strongest attribute. The developers respected the intelligence and ingenuity of it's players the way most modern games do not. This is a 10/10 game.

      Amazing summary! Agree 💯 %. The bittersweet story / relationship between arisen and main pawn is also masterfully told through the stories around Selene and the whole Bitterblack Isle plot. The story of Dogma has many philosophical concepts (God, free will, keep fighting even if it looks hopeless - just to name some of them) and makes you actually think about life and the concept of choices imho.

      @@lf7877 It annoys me beyond belief when reviewers or fans criticize the story of DD because I know they didn't understand it. Since the story revolves around the relationship of the two main characters you create, you shape your pawns personality and gameplay style, you as the player have a level of control or involvement in the story all the branching dialogue options in the world could not give. You aren't just some chosen hero who goes on the heros journey. You are also a mentor to a future hero and ultimately the main villain yourself.
      You don't just empathize with those journeys you live them out. The first time I saw the ending I saw what happened but did not really understand it on a deep level. I was like..... Huh? That was weird. It took me 2 maybe three times seeing it before the gravity of it set in. Then I understood the many design choices I thought were flawed and realized they were expertly crafted and implemented. Even the opening escort quest I hated everytime I did it and cursed it over and over, I came to understand why it was there and what the developers were saying with it.
      Don't get to comfortable. You can't speed through everything nor should you want to. Embrace the struggle and the game opens up to you.

      @@sethchandler4170 Exactly! I really don't understand how a reviewer could miss this deep and well crafted story and yet there are many who still insists that 'the story is non-existent', 'it's only about combat', 'there is no fast travel, it's unbearable' (when clearly there is fast travel but you have to earn it) and so on. Clearly they did not do a full playthrough (and then a NG+). As you've said, only after a while all the hidden (and not so hidden) messages of the game become clearer and why it is designed in exactly this way. One thing is clear tho: this is not a RPG for the casual gamer. In a way DD reminds me of Morrowind, for me one of the best RPGs ever. You are a stranger in a strange land, you have no clue what's going on and even tho you try so hard to get better the game very often tells you that you are simply not good enough, no matter how hard you try. You are a N'wah and you have to fight and learn really hard to earn your place in this land.
      That's why I love DD so much: you have to keeep going, to keep trying, to keep fighting and all those failures and experiences eventually shape you, make you fit for your role as the next Seneschal.
      Thank's for such a good conversation, Sir, very much appreciated!

    If you're a Mystic Knight (or just feel like it,) you can use a Wakestone on Julien after killing him, who will rise from the dead and then admit that yes, he's guilty, but he's too honorable to give a shit. You can speak to him in the Dungeon in Gran Soren afterwards, getting his Magick Shield for MK (it's alright) and 100% Affinity with him, if that's your thing.
    I always make sure to give him some Liquid Effluvium afterwards to negate the Affinity gains and because I hate him intensely, greatly enjoying his "EUGH" response, because nothing says "New Boyfriend" better than a glass jar full of the city's diarrhea. Thanks for the shield, you uppity chode, I'll never use it and you'll rot in jail before being executed. Pretty satisfying, ngl. This game fucking owns.

    Another legendary entry in why this game is so much fun. Thank you for making this.
    I cannot explain how much I enjoy the freedom and player agency provided by this game. Sustained with a story so grand it would take a wise, selfless person not to repeat the same mistake to infinity. So much room to be taken across the world to see how others have dealt with the dragon, or addressing the different solutions to culling the cycle. Dark Arisen DLC tastes that potential, and it makes you curious of why the Duke wanted to harm Aelinore, was she a spy for the other "Wyrmslayer"? Feels like we'll never know...
    Hopefully Capcom gives this game another go in someone's lifetime. The efficient cycle that depends solely on the players will could be served with many solutions. I'm curious to if they'll parallel to my own ideas or not. I hope I have the opportunity of seeing... But after that anime... I'm a little reticent.

    I hope the sequel doesn't nerf the travel. Having the limited fast travel makes traversing the environments challenging in a way most games don't give us now. I love Elden Ring, but once I've got somewhere then can easily fast travel back and forth, it cheapens the experience. Why create amazing landscapes, creatures, puzzles and traps then be able to skip them all. I know many people find travel tedious. But there's plenty of games with fast travel everywhere. It's so refreshing having that restricted, so you actually have to live in the land. They could make it more exciting perhaps by changing up monsters and even having shifting terrain in places to make it more unpredictable (and limit repetitive fetch quests to the same areas). Just my two pennies worth.

    Starting Dragons Dogma is the same for everyone I feel. You’re kinda invested at the start. Seeing Grigori for the first time and traversing through a small dungeon fighting wolves and harpies then finalized with a chimera. You’re intrigued with the combat and mechanics then get into the real game. You make your character and fight Grigori for the first time and are even more invested. Then you get to the encampment and fight the ogre make your pawn then everything slows way the fuck down. The ox quest. I won’t lie, every time I restart I dwell on this one. But I know the absolute fun and amazing things that lie beyond it and get through it anyways. Sadly most people just put it down because of that. But this game is so amazing. The story isn’t entirely fledged out and kinda vague but the more you play the more you understand and learn how amazing it is. The little mechanics are my favorite part. For instance character creation. The fact your weight and height affects gameplay is amazing. Or maybe throwing your pawns off cliffs. Better yet playing catch with your pawn using a dead deer. One I like a lot is that your class really doesn’t matter and none is truly better than another and all have their shining moment. Everything is unique in its own way. Traveling is kinda tedious yes. But getting to experience the landscapes and being rewarded for killing enemies makes up for all of that. This game is challenging in many ways but is also beautiful and extremely rewarding. I’d suggest it over any triple a title.

    • @Browsley
      @Browsley  2 года назад

      Another cool aspect I've recently started noticing and also read a bit on some forums is that the cycle, you losing your heart and becoming the Arisen, fighting Grigori, becoming the Seneschal, then plummeting back and everything starts anew in new game plus. I feel that it's sorta a meta-story. Where the cycle never truly end before you the player puts down the game for good.

    After playing the game and finishing it completely(Main questline, a bunch of the side quests and Dark Arisen subplot). One word essentially describes the game. Unfinished.
    The world was empty, the quests requiring hours to complete(usually tolerable, if you have something to do, besides trekking), lack of quests, no subhubs, too few main hubs, clearly cut content (the quest suggesting you go to other lands, besides the dukedom), reused maps in Everfall(again highly likely to be compromise to meet deadlines).
    It's not even restricted to world-building and quest-linking. The combat system is pretty balanced for the first 50 levels(pre-Gran Soren), but after that mark, any enemy(maybe besides the Drake in the woods) can be dominated by most classes. This is fixed in the DLC, but I always felt that some enemies became annoying bullet sponges that required you to mindlessly hack them in a learned pattern, making a single fight your 1 hour trek from before(or I'm simply a noob who doesn't utilise his hero well)
    If it was given more time to stew, it could have been a much better game. Then again, it felt like it missed half of its content, so I'm not even sure if it's can be a design flaw/flawed design that makes the game feel unfinished. Dark Arisen did not exhibit it too much, but that may be masked by its more intense combat, that made individual areas more challenging and hence more memorable.
    Is it better to have a memorable world with fast travel or an empty world without?

      I think I read somewhere that there was planned way more for this game but they were rushed to release it. Which would explain the feeling of emptiness.

    This will always be one of my favorite games. I really hope it gets a proper sequel with improvements. But until then, I’m really enjoying Elden Ring - my first souls game and I haven’t had as much fun with a game since DD

      I'm torn between that and the Dragonborn theme playing during the Hydra fight and the Goku instant transmission sound when Quina leaves the witch's hut. It's all so good.

    I loved this game, still have 8 accounts active with new char. I had no problem with walking, first play I didn't even sleep just kept wandering at night.

    Greatest sin of Dragon's dogma is beaing a linieral game wearing skin of open world game.
