    Thanks a lot for the tutorial! I was having a lot of trouble getting Davinci Resolve to work on my machine, but after watching your tutorial, I managed to make it work first try! This is a great video!

    What's your experience? How usable is it on linux? I'm considering buying the studio version (for h264/265), but i have heard that it still crashes often.

    • @StaempunkTV

      I mainly edit in DaVinci Resolve on a slightly underpowered iMac (OSX with i5 CPU and 8GB ram). Resolve does work in Linux on my Asus K65CM laptop (only in Peppermint 10 though) but because that laptop is a little old, it struggles with any kind of colour correction or intensive FX. At some point I'll get a more powerful computer so I'll move to using Resolve in Linux but for now, I just stick to editing in OSX.
      In my experience, Resolve is very picky with GPU's in Linux especially. I've tried running Resolve on the Asus laptop in Pop!_OS, Fedora, MX Linux, Mint OS, Manjaro, Arch, all with no success but for some reason Peppermint 10 seems to be able to run it ok. I haven't tried Resolve Studio though.

    • @StaempunkTV
      @StaempunkTV  10 месяцев назад +1

      @Arktur-9x Some say it is faster on Linux. From what I've read online, the difference is negligible. Linux being lighter on system resources can give performance advantages however there are issues like not being able to take advantage of the AAC audio codec when rendering. There are a few threads online on the topic if you do a search. I'm still working on Resolve on a Ryzen 9 Windows laptop. Thanks for your comment!

      @Efe Hi thanks for your question. It seems Pop_OS! has an issue installing libssl1.1 for some reason. It might be due to a conflict with other SSL libraries already installed on Pop_OS. Today is Monday, May 23, 2022. I'm trying to escape Windows and run DaVinci Resolve on Linux. After 2 months of trying conflicting directions on the methods used on the various distros of Linux I feel like giving up. Anyone claiming that using Linux is easy is already a Linux user, much like the Blender coders who claim Blender is easy with its sea of undecipherable buttons.
    thanks for trying to help. Now I know why Windows is the most popular OS on earth-

    • @StaempunkTV
      @StaempunkTV  2 года назад +1

      @Steblu74 I agree Windows is much easier to use than most Linux distros. It was due to necessity that I started using Linux - my computer was too underpowered to run Windows smoothly. I also agree that the learning curve for Linux is steeper than Windows. Hence I'm attempting to demystify Linux by posting these how-to videos for people who are looking for a slightly easier entry into the Linux universe. I appreciate your comment. Cheers!

      Because you're installing a different version than I did in the video, you'll have to copy the file/folder names relevant to you (hence why I showed how to use the 'ls' or list command to display the folder/file names to copy/paste). The 'cd' command is to change to the directory so I'm guessing you'll have to run the following command to enter the folder where 'DaVinci_Resolve_18.0b4_Linux.run' is contained:
      cd DaVinci_Resolve_18.0b4_Linux

      You're correct that it is most likely a codec issue. A potential fix is to use Handbrake to recode the videos:
      In Handbrake, import the problem video then after selecting a preset, go to the 'Video' tab and select 'H.264(x264) for the 'Video Encoder' and select the 'Constant Framerate' radio button. Good luck! Let me know if this solves the issue.

Nothing worked, although converting an mp4 from my phone to a .mov in Ciano produced a clip that had video in Davinci, but no audio. Which is the opposite of ingesting a .mov from my camera into Davinci. Than produces a clip that has audio, but no video. I've pretty well exhausted my options that I know of for file conversions, other than ffmpeg (not sure of the name). Looks like it's back to KdenLive for me, which other than it's crashing occasionally, works pretty well. If your system was previously able to run DR and now can't, sometimes updating to the latest compatible GPU driver for your system with 'Reset to factory defaults' during install (AMD cards especially) works. I'm still editing in DR on an iMac until I upgrade my Linux laptop.

      @@StaempunkTV I'm using Ubuntu Linux 20.04. This is such a nuisance, since HandBrake's not working right on my Windows 10 OS, but it's working fine on Linux, while DaVinci's working fine on Windows, but it's not working on Linux. You understand my headache.

    Can I also install it in KALI linux with this tutorial?

    • @StaempunkTV
      @StaempunkTV  2 года назад +1

      Kali being a Debian-based OS should work. Resolve is very picky with GPUs in Linux distros though. I've got a laptop with an Nvidia card that runs Resolve fine in Windows and Peppermint 10 but not in other Linux distros on that laptop. I tried Pop!_OS, MX21, Fedora, Manjaro (with the AUR version), Feren, Zorin, Elementary but none worked. Only Peppermint 10 for some reason. I'm interested to know if it works for you with Kali. Cheers!

    • @StaempunkTV

      It is likely due to your GPU. DaVinci Resolve is really fussy when it comes to Linux GPUs. One of my laptops runs Resolve fine in Windows (albeit slowly) but won't run Resolve when I'm in Linux on the same machine.

      And another thing besides your tutorials it's very impressive and easy-to-follow that I like is the fact that you respond very quickly and I'm sure you probably a fairly busy person so to be able to still take the time to help your fellow subscribers Out means a lot keep doing what you doing bro keep pushing keep reaching for stars

      Thank you, I appreciate your kind thoughts. I receive an alert when anyone comments and it only takes a minute or so to reply anyway. It might become more time consuming as the channel grows and when other work requires more of my attention. But all going to plan, I'll become a full-time content creator so this all goes with the territory. Cheers!

    can it work on chromebook?

      @StaempunkTV  Год назад

      @ItzLoyal It would depend on the Chromebook's specs especially the GPU and also the Linux distro you are running on it. I haven't used a Chromebook though so I have no personal experience trying a DaVinci Resolve install on one.
