Nice to see the little red Niva 1600 still kickin' ass and takin' names!! We had a 97 1.7L fuel injected Niva and loved it very much. It broke our hearts when I was transferred to the city and had to move selling our acreage. I would have another one today, but they stopped importing them into Canada in 1997 or 98. Best Car ever for a Canadian Winter, and not a bad hunting truck either. I'll always remember the Lada Niva motto "Always half broke, but never broke down!".
That's what I always say to my friends! My russian cars was always broke, but nevertheless I always could get to places. They where never totally broke. I always could shortcut some wires, hit with the wrench here and there, put some wet rug on the fuel pump to cool it, and voila! We can go now! No sophisticated electronics, no injectors, no anything. Just fuel, air and a little bit of electricity -- if you have that three ingredients, you can keep going! I miss those times (by the way I was much younger then :-)

My experience with the Lada Niva in rural Kenya is different from what this video depicts. The Lada Niva I drove was a robust machine and never for once got stuck in the deep soggy mud found in rural Kenya.

Un compañero mio de trabajo llegó a hundir hasta los bajos en un lodazal un defender 90 de los antiguos. Y otro compañero lo sacó 10 minutos después sin ayuda. Depende mucho del conductor y su pericia conduciendolo.

I owned a Niva for 4 years and it is really a great character! But the Jimny is also a pure offroad car with straight axles and all what is needed to perform well!
I had the pleasure of working In Kazakhstan for a number of years and we used Niva's for everything. They were comfortable and reliable. It was explained to me that they were deliberately designed to be basic and easy to repair at the side of the road. Most drivers carried common spares such as fan belts, points, plugs, fuel filters (quality of fuel could be bad). If you broke down at the side of the road someone would stop and help you. Because they were such common cars the chances were the next car down the road would be a Niva. People helped each other. The chances were you could patch the car up well enough to limp home with it. Great cars, and great people.
The Jimny and the Niva have reduction gears but most importantly off-road tires. The Duster has a really short 1st gear but both it and the Freelander have street tires... no wonder they got stuck quite often. Even so, if you enjoyed yourselves that's good on you!
@@DriveQ Have always been impressed by the Niva, when fitted with a body lift, locking diffs, lower low range transfer gears and good offroad tires it will perform as well as or even better than a lot of more expensive 4x4s.

I drive a Audi 100 C4 2.6 Station Quattro with Diff lock but if I had to choose between the 3 car's - I would take the Lada. Strong and easy to fix. Thanks for the video.
I understand different cars have different mechanical architecture, but if some have AT/MT tyres and others have road tyres, it's not fair. Tyres give traction.

The Lada accessories are the best...small spanner for the contact points with a cleaning file and feeler gauge on the end...then the 12volt light that almost looks like made from a funnel and plugs in under the bonnet...you can reset your points in the dark in the woods before a bear arrives to eat you...
This video shows people "playing" with vehicles off-road. I used vehicles off road in the "empty quarter" of the UAE-Oman desert for 5 + years and the Lada Niva was the most useful / reliable vehicle.

Soy un fan del Niva tuve dos, un 1600 cc con caja de 4ta como el rojo y otro 1700 cc con caja de 5ta. Muy buenos apara el barro. Asi y todo no se los puede comparar con la Duster y el LR porue ninguno de ellos tiene gomas apropiadas para barro.

I owned an '81 and a '96 Niva...very capable but the timing chain tensioner was the weak point on the engine. If it wasn't adjusted right it could cause major problems...I see this one in the video is painted Stalin red, same as my "96.

Nice video. Obvious that tires make a huge difference. This is the type of off-roading I like too see. Here in the USA this trail would have built up 4x4's with 30k in aftermarket parts. If you ever want to donate any of these... :).
I had a dark red Lada Niva about 1996. You had to seal the starter motor and the cabin around the transmission to stop water coming in to the cabin. A nice light car. Bigger 4WDs are the worst for getting bogged.

El Lada Niva y el Jimny muestran buen comportamiento, pero la Duster mucho más complicada. Al Niva le faltan unos neumáticos más ancho. Eso ayuda mucho para el barro.
Agree about tires, but you can't use those Niva's tires on Duster because they will broke something in Duster. Maybe some AT tires would be good choice for it

Для начала лифтануть(клиренс увеличить), в интернете множество способов, вы бирайте который вам удобней и проще, но если лифтанёте больше 4см, ставьте на передние привода, со стороны редуктора триподы, за место гранат(шрусов), шруса хрустят при лифте, триподы нет, у меня стоят триподы "Белмаг", не плохие, но я не знаю какие у вас в Молдове, но гранаты я переставил всякие, все начинают хрустеть через 500км, на триподах уже 7000км примерно проехал и пока тишина, лифт у меня 6-7см, затем занижайте редукцию раздатки, (в интернете тоже вся инфа есть) если колёса больше 29дюймов, то уже надо менять главные пары в редукторах, стальной корпус переднего редуктора можно поставить, задний мост обварить усилить(а то бывает его гнёт, как у меня на пример)), лебёдку ставте, пыльники на шруса-триподы поставте полиуретановые(резина долго не ходит) ... Если конкретные вопросы будут - пишите, постараюсь отведить!
Dusterul și Freelander-ul au avut un "mic" dezavantaj, care în offroad-ing contează foarte mult, aveau cauciucuri de stradă, în timp ce Jimny și Ladele aveau cauciucuri specializate, de offroad, deci nu a fost o competiție tocmai corectă, dar da, cu siguranță, toate cele 4 modele (deși nu sunt atât de sigur în privința Freelander-ului) au capacități aproximativ egale :D

Having the wrong tires can make for bad offroad performance. The vehicles here look like they all have road tires lol

Agree about tires, but you can't use those Niva's tires on Duster because they will broke something in Duster. Maybe some AT tires would be good choice for it

I'd go for the Duster anytime. With a 3.5 cm lift and a All Terrain tires. It is good.

Привет! Что посоветуете дорабатывать в ней?
@@DriveQ Привет! Да много чего! Для начала лифтануть(клиренс увеличить), в интернете множество способов, вы бирайте который вам удобней и проще, но если лифтанёте больше 4см, ставьте на передние привода, со стороны редуктора триподы, за место гранат(шрусов), шруса хрустят при лифте, триподы нет, у меня стоят триподы "Белмаг", не плохие, но я не знаю какие у вас в Молдове, но гранаты я переставил всякие, все начинают хрустеть через 500км, на триподах уже 7000км примерно проехал и пока тишина, лифт у меня 6-7см, затем занижайте редукцию раздатки, (в интернете тоже вся инфа есть) если колёса больше 29дюймов, то уже надо менять главные пары в редукторах, стальной корпус переднего редуктора можно поставить, задний мост обварить усилить(а то бывает его гнёт, как у меня на пример)), лебёдку ставте, пыльники на шруса-триподы поставте полиуретановые(резина долго не ходит) ... Если конкретные вопросы будут - пишите, постараюсь отведить!

Dusterul și Freelander-ul au avut un "mic" dezavantaj, care în offroad-ing contează foarte mult, aveau cauciucuri de stradă, în timp ce Jimny și Ladele aveau cauciucuri specializate, de offroad, deci nu a fost o competiție tocmai corectă, dar da, cu siguranță, toate cele 4 modele (deși nu sunt atât de sigur în privința Freelander-ului) au capacități aproximativ egale :D
prioritatea nr.1 a fost petrecerea unui timp calitativ si distractie maxima intre prieteni :) dar ai dreptate in ceea ce ai spus :)
