  • It may seem odd that people might feel sentimental about a scrap yard, but Dai Woodham's locomotive scrap yard in Barry was unique. And it seems to have touched 100s of people who lived in the town.
In this video I tell the stories that many shared with me about the place. I also interview people who worked at the yard to get a feel what life was like day to day for the people who kept it ticking over. I also speak to people who knew Dai Woodham (including his wife and some of his children).
We also have some expertise from steam enthusiast Gavin Douglas OBE.
This video is an episode from the History on your doorstep programme on Bro Radio. Written, presented and published by Welsh author and historian; Graham Loveluck-Edwards. Author of "Monica', 'Historic Pubs of Wales' and the 'Legends and Folklore of Glamorgan' series. Published by Candy Jar Books LTD (Cardiff). Very interesting, i visited in 1980, and again in 1983 to record the yard on super 8 Kodak cine film, and also on colour slides. I still look at them, amazed that almost all but two were preserved. Sad/happy memories of our beloved steam locomotives, thank goodness Dai Woodham didn't cut them immediately like the other yards did. 😊

Da iawn Graham, for a very interesting look back at the trains graveyard. Back in the mid 70s we used to cycle down from Wenvoe Terrace, go scrambling on the ash path, and then climb all over the old engines. Happy days.

I saw the loco graveyard about 1968, looking very much like your opening shot. About the same time, I saw steam locos being used to haul coal out of Groesfaen Colliery in the Darren Valley. That colliery was in the process of being closed, so I guess they were engaged in reducing the accumulated stockpile. Now, it has to be said that these locos were owned by the NCB, not BR, so those coal trains probably got no further than the sidings at Bargoed Station, where diesels took over. I am guessing that the same operational method also took place at nearby Bargoed and Britannia Collieries, which both worked the same extensive siding network. I guess the NCB held on to these steam locos because Bargoed Colliery was renowned for its steam coal. But as far as I know BR steam locos had mostly been taken away for scrap in South Wales by 68.

I reckon the MP would have been Robert Adley, he loved railways and especially steam locomotives.

In true MP speak I would reply; “you may well think that, but I couldn’t possibly comment” 😂😂

Really enjoyed this. Thanks very much. The Harry Potter locomotive came from The North Yorkshire Moors Railway I believe. Hogwarts station in the film was Goathland station on the NYM railway. It's also the station used on the popular television series Heart Beat. Goathland village is Aidensfield. The viaduct the train runs over in Harry Potter is the Glenfinnan viaduct on the route from Fort William to Mallaig.

Like you Graham I remember those trains and my brother and I would spend hours staring at them on our annual summer day out on the Island. They were an iconic aspect to Barry.
