Most local coaches I've known used to frown at that skill. One of them died after work. He'd really hated me to use the forehand slice. Now I'm determined to prove him wrong. I'm still alive anyway.
Same with my coach, he dosen't want me to use it except for defensive measures. But I disagree and use it in matches lol. Everyone expects a topspin forehand these days. Giving them different looks especially on big points or games can throw them off
I love that shot but most of my coaches try to convince me to not use that shot but for me it feels extremely natural as I am not really a baseline player and play an old school tennis from the 80s..........

I’m 70. I have hit a forehand slice my whole tennis life.I take lessons from a coach who hates it ..he wants topspin…yet my opponents hate it more.its natural to me. I can hit topspin too but most opponents face that every day.

Very useful video. It is a must have for a defensive shot on the forehand wing. Also a great approach keeping the ball low. Also helps to develop feel and change the pace of the rally

Hello, the keys to an effective forehand slice for me are a level swing path, slightly open racquet face and a very generous backswing to impart power. The ball stays low and you get good pace and depth. A short slice has a more angular swing.

It is useful to buy time and likewise provide a deep shot option where the opponent might otherwise 'read' drop shot. (if they are too deep from a previous shot, an effective slice can cause problems as they try to 'run down' the dropper and have to decelerate, change direction, and get into a hitting position)

Isn't the main use of the forehand slice, apart from drop shots or defensive recoveries or as a variety shot in a long rally, as an approach to get you to the net? Would it be useful to have a drill of taking a mid-court ball with a deep forehand slice and running in to the net after it?

Hi. I wonder if you could do videos on these topics. 1. Say, you hit crosscourt backhand. Next, you want to hit sharper angle crosscourt and target the corner of the service box (assume, you aim both shots 2 feet from the lines for safety). Both balls you hit at the same height and you want them both to clear the net, say 4 feet. Question: what changes in the shot mechanic when you hit these to shots?
2. How do you aim balls? Say, you want to hit 3 targets: right corner, center, left corner. How does this work mechanically, do you do it with your hips, shoulders, wrist angle?

Bob I think I can answer your question sir. I am a teaching pro, and have played tennis for about 20 years. Your goal with aiming I would say the base would be great technique. So this isn't something that's really possible without it. The body should be very involved in both groundstrokes, so for question one these 2 different shots come down to very slightly different timings, and swing paths, if I was hitting baseline corner crosscourt I want an early timing. Essential Tennis Ian W. Actually has a great video in this stuff on RUclips. The short angle I would hit even earlier than the corner BH and I would also swing up in the ball to try and get extra topspin on the ball to bring it down in the service box. For your second question, that's how you aim, it's all a timing thing, but like I said you need to have good technique as well. A good player hits far out in front, if you use you hand even to mimic or "shadow swing" you can see that a later contact will push the ball straighter. I don't want to give specific direction because I am left handed so it's different for everyone but basically, early swing is crosscourt Later swing is down the line. Of course better players can also manipulate the racket face to achieve these things with great disguise as well. I hope this helps you.

So what's the difference between a forehand slice and a chip shot?
Ronald Stevens i think essentially they’re the same (slice shots) but most chip shots are made defensively (either on a run or a ‘block’) and have no forward momentum to the ball, while forehand slices are done intentionally and have more forward movement than chip shots.

This FR slice may work at a beginners level,players with 2-3 years of experience will kill that "slices"!
not in my experience. I know a 4.5 guy who slices his forehand and wins tournaments.
decent shot but nobody plays this off the baseline at professional level. Its only used as an approach shot. I can see how it can work at lower 4.5 level or below though
Plamen Marinov why wouldn’t you play it at a baseline? When is it used most? I’m pretty new at tennis so I am just curious.
@@tanerbulbul6423 because an experienced player will see your grip and will right away know before you hit the ball that you are either A going to slice the ball or B try to hit a drop shot. The forehand slice itself is a slow shot and hard to hit low over the net unlike the backhand slice. So knowing that I can run around my backhand and start attacking you with my inside out forehand. A good player will finish the point after you hit this forehand slice in the next 2-3 shots. This is why you never see professionals slice their forehand from the baseline. It just doesn't make sense. Why do it when their normal forehand is a lot faster and heavier. The only time they slice on forehand is if ball is low and they are hitting an approach shot. Usually they do that when they are close to the service line. As I mentioned above this shot will only work against lower level players 4.5 level rating and below. Basically players who sttuggle to generate pace off slow balls and have no real weapons to hurt you with. You try hitting that shot in an open level tournament and you will get crushed.
