    well im writing this as im watching, and at 1:50 when he "borrows" the $1 bill from the audience member he swaps the bills and he just hands the guy back his own dollar bill that he was originally trying to volunteer for the trick. So the magician pulled out his dollar and then pretended to get a totally random bill, but in the end he used his own bill and gave the audience member his own money right back to him. idk if that necessarily does much for the trick since i only just started watching, but im assuming thats an important part of the trick. You can see Teller leaning out of his chair trying to see the move, since the magician does a good job of blocking their view of his swap

    My theory: He made a small tear in it at 4:17. I think you can actually hear the rip a bit at 4:18. Then at 4:23 when the camera zooms in, you can see he starts to hold the bill very carefully as if its torn, not to reveal the illusion. Then he slips the bill inside the other carefully at 4:24. And here's where the madness comes in. I think that he has some sort of really fast drying, really clear glue/or tape stuck on his fingers and he is pressing it on the bill to put it back together. But it's just a theory. A magic theory.

      +knpstrr The thing about the show is you have to fool Penn and Teller. If they know how he did it, he did not fool them. Now, they could say that for each person that goes up there "Ah yes we know how you did it" but the talk they have with the guests is for them to confirm they know how the trick was done.

  • @GracefulCalvinist
    @GracefulCalvinist 8 лет назад +324

    so basically, the only reason they didn't get fooled is because he showed them at other shows... this is why a magician never reveals his secrets. they basically said he did the trick very well, and the only reason they weren't fooled is because he already showed them the trick.

    • @truekep

      Yeah. He said he's held on to that trick in particular for himself, but sadly that wasn't enough when it uses a lot of the same moves as his others, and he's shared those with Penn & Teller, and others. I'm sure he's happy with the exposure the show gives him.

      No that's not how it works. You notice Penn says "We don't have the hands and we don't have the FINGERNAILS" to create a paper version of the linking rings. It's the same bill, he just took one of the and cut a special seam with his finger nail that overlays and locks itself into place. The type of paper dollar bills use is woven so when it is cut thinly and at a jagged angle it can be "relock" at a seam so that you can pull on it with minor to moderate force that if it were to come apart you would think you had torn it. Brilliant and original.

  • @tnmygrwl
    @tnmygrwl 9 лет назад

    I'm not a budding magician or anything but from what I have observed watching this video multiple times which can slightly explain how he might've done it is:
    1. Blake never exchanges the bill with Del Marlow (Yeah that's his real name, cool right?) which is pretty easy to spot.
    2. At 5:20 or so Blake starts his little misdirection talking about federal laws and shit, that's when you start observing his hands and Teller's eyes, at precisely 5:39, Blake manages to tear one ring, slide the other and glue it (or whatever). While Penn's busy speaking for Teller, Teller spots the trick ignoring the misdirection and tells Penn right away and that's when Blake knows he's busted but he still puts up a great show for the rest of us. Great Job Blake, you're truly inspiring.

  • @theo2351
    @theo2351 9 лет назад +7

    He makes a tear in one of the squares and covers it up with his hand the first time, as you can see him holding it very carefully around 4:24. At 4:44, you can see that he is still covering up the same place the tear was made (bottom left of the top "square"). The second time he links them, he uses some kind of glue or sealant that takes a while to dry. This is why he holds on the bills very tightly while stalling for time by asking Teller to accept responsibility, which takes around 30 seconds. By the time he finally hands Teller the bill, it's already been glued/sealed back together, so the seam is invisible.

  • @danep2973

    This wasn't really fair! If you didn't show P&T your prior methods, they would have been fooled. I'm blown away, too, that it ends clean, with a signed bill that can be examined, after all is said and done.

  • @DancinJim
    @DancinJim 8 лет назад +23

    Not really sure why so many people are fixated on him not swapping the bills. That's just one element of the trick. Even with his own note, he still has to do something with 'seams' as Penn and Teller point out, right in front of their eyes, where they are unable to see him do it or feel the seams on the note afterwards.

  • @mitchio83
    @mitchio83 9 лет назад +43

    The bill swap in the audience was switched in his hands and he gives the man back his same dollar. The bill that teller rips is a normal bill. The bill that the magician rips is a rigged bill. The bill has a precise cut in a spot that would end up being the corner of his final ripped bill, he hides that cut corner with his fingers the whole time. When he connects the 2 bills he simply slides the other bill through the cut in the corner. The "welding" of the rigged bill is done in his hands after the final interlocking. I'm not exactly sure how that was done but maybe some type of glue.

    It's my opinion that the best magic tricks are those that make people go "Woooah" in some form or other.
    He got that reaction. And I enjoyed the trick. Of course it's impossible to make "whole" paper pass through itself to form a perfect ring, but like P&T said: He did it so well, with so much skill, that you can *watch* him do it and still fail to see it.
    This is a win in my book.

    What happens... well putting it shortly, It's a rigged marker. The marker has a certain glue, the seam that was cut was in the middle of one of the signatures. He then spreads the thin layer of glue from the signature over the rest of the seam which takes place at 5:34 when Teller nods his head and then looks at Penn with that look. That look signals Penn and let's him know that Teller has figured it out.

    the trick is in the bill. custom bill where there's a slit/cut not perpendicular like you would ripping or using scissors. but parallel to the bill, basically splitting the sheet in half. his hand maneuvers join the halves together into a solid sheet thickness and thus Penn and teller can't even scratch out the split in the bill

    • @Oogtug
      @Oogtug 9 лет назад

      +MattMexor Penn implies and it could be done that he is simply a small seem in the bill he is holding during the trick. Some sort of adhesive is then used to mend that 'seam' and make it appear whole. The wizardry is in how effectively the guy does it. What makes the bill special is simply the way he manipulates it.

    • @Oogtug
      @Oogtug 9 лет назад

      My only issue with that claim is objectively: we have no reason to necessarily assume the bill was special. P&T more than likely would be able to tell and would have called that out. All of this is basically going on the premise of: I presume he used a modified bill, therefore I will contort the evidence to fit my predetermined hypothesis. No big deal, it's just really we can't say. It's an assumption that it is.

  • @fenlet6062
    @fenlet6062 7 лет назад

    When the 2 halves were originally made, he ripped a slit in his half, and beautifully keeps it hidden at all times. At 5:35, he puts some adhesive on the bill to close the slit. The bill is likely fake and made out of some special material that can reattach seamlessly when combined with a special adhesive

    same bill. while he was talking, why did he put both bills in the same hand (at 2:03 in) then give the audience member back a bill. so...trick bill. if he showed the serial number, or another aspect of the bill, that he took out of his wallet, then when he got back on stage, showed that not only the one he had in his hand had a different serial number or what ever, but also had camera zoom in on the one the audience members had, showing that the one the audience member had was the one he was originally holding on stage from his wallet, then maybe you got a convincing trick.

      Allen Pilgrim i hear that, everyone keeps saying that. i get that it was a spin on the linking rings trick, but it seemed to me that they couldn't figure out how he did it with dollar bills. so of course, its a variation of the linking rings.. but penn clearly said something like "but we don't know how you did it so cleanly with this material" which to me sounds like they don't know how he did it.. of course they know the basis for the trick.. but without knowing exactly, i thought that would count
