The ladies fashions were so elegant, so flattering to the female form. So cleverly designed in order to make all ladies physically attractrively equal with disguise. The high necklines & collars, bustles over the bottom, dropped, corseted waistlines, mutton sleeves, wide shoulders, cuffs that covered unflattering & or aged hands. Especiially kind to mature ladies. That said, such an extremely harsh era in which to have lived. How can things have changed so drastically over a mere 150 years to bring us to the state we are in today ? I guess the answer lies with a statement that my Father made to me. He was born in 1918, lived until he was 86 years old. Served at Dunkirk & was a prisoner of war on the Burma railway for 3 & a half years. After coming home & overcoming his demons of war, he went on to enjoy the 40's, 50's, 60's 70's etc with my Mother, my sister & I & told me this. "Despite the war, we had the best of it" RIP Dad, I agree. Our Parents time was somewhere in the middle, their era got it right. It was wrong 150 years ago & it is wrong again now though worlds apart.
What a big tough man! He belittles and yells at his 8yr old boy, every chance he gets but, kowtows to and must cajole his wife in an attempt to curry her favours...which unfortunately she refuses to bestow upon him. He takes his wounded manhood out on his young boy! Pitiful behaviour all around....
We are so bombarded with explosions, fast car crashes, cursing, sex scenes etc... when we get a chance to see something like this it is a much needed change, exception: the adulterous bed scene in the last episode.
I agree with you both, but it was monstrously stupid to bury the dead infant in the rear yard of her flat. Of course any disturbance of the soil back there is going to lead to the discovery of the body, and implicate her. And Randall by extension.

The character is poor where would she find money for a plot in the cemetery and the other expenses that comes with that? It is really too bad that she agreed to go along with Hannah's plan. She was indeed brave and noble to go back and face the situation. Hannah seems to be only been thinking of her desires.
It was prestigious to send one's child off to boarding school in English Culture. However, a lot of boys were molested in such institutions. One of my friends' brother was one of them.
Sir Walter Scott wrote those words in 1808. The actual quote is: “Oh, what a tangled web we weave, When first we practice to deceive!” Truer words were never spoken!
I find it hard to like Hannah because she involves other people in her problems & expects them to clean up her messes. She unnecessarily involved so many other people in her decision to switch the babies, & now one of them is already paying the price for helping Hannah. Meanwhile, Hannah will continue blithely on her way, leaving chaos in her wake.
I will never envy not being born into aristocracy or high society again. Poor children with vicious nanny's, some good ones. Parent were not raising their own, vicious nanny cycle.
I know I should feel sorry for Isabel, because she's setting herself for a life of grief by marrying HIM, but I can't. She's so self-absorbed and shallow!

Things are getting messy now. Love watching shows that are filmed during this era and I love the way that the men and women dressed. Seems like such a romantic time, but I'm sure that those who were not lucky enough to have money had it very rough. I think there were only 2 classes back then. But I may be wrong.
+Munchausen: With respect, that's incorrect. It was conceived of as a series that would air for more than one season; that's why ep 10 ends with some major cliffhangers (they would have been resolved in future seasons had the BBC not axed it prematurely).
Thank goodness the way children are raised has changed. Now the kids grow up with "Smart Phones" & taught by strangers on the internet. Many cannot read or spell properly, have poor critical thinking skills because they can just "Ask Siri". The anxiety & depression levels we see among the youth is appalling. I took care of an early teen boy who we had to strap down by wrists & ankles because he was hysterical, hallucinating, screaming at the top of his lungs & arching off the bed. His father came & didn't recognize his boy insisting he didn't use drugs of any sort. It turned out the boy had taken bath salts he purchased via the internet & became violently psychotic. His heart rate was 280. He survived but was so traumatized we were certain he would require long-term therapy. Giving children unrestricted access to the internet is like pushing them out of the car in the worst neighborhood. And kids are very tech-savvy so keep checking regularly because they & their friends learn how to get around parental guards, etc. It's not spying, it's caring.

Spoiler Alert ⚠ aka "Synopsis" ⚠ 8 "Who Killed Cock Robin?" 28 June 1998 50min. After Hannah explains the circumstances of Billy's birth and why she brought him into the Hutchinson home following Charlie's death, Matty apologises for judging her and promises to stand by her. Hugh threatens Lydia's family with eviction from their land, and she asks Nanny Collins for help. Charlie's body is found by workers laying new pipes in the neighbourhood and Mrs. Bronowski is arrested for his murder. Matty continues to fight her growing feelings for Ned, but eventually admits them. (SOURCE= Wikipedia)
Marriage & children were a duty for the aristocracy, and about consolidating power & forging connections with other wealthy powerful families. The English aristocracy's rule of primogeniture meant that the title & all land, possessions & wealth of an aristocratic family were passed on in their entirety to only one child--the eldest son. The wealth wasn't divided fairly among all the children, but consolidated in the hands of one male child each generation. That's how these families accumulated & hoarded their vast wealth, standing & aristocratic titles. Since the estate could only be passed on to a male heir, and so many children died before they reached the age of majority, it was essential to have "an heir and a spare"--at least two sons, only the eldest of whom would inherit the estate. Women often gave birth to MANY children in order to guarantee at least one son made it to adulthood.
Was it true that royal youngsters said " off with their heads" in a game? The only people who charge the right price are childcare centres, over $100 approx a day!
Women had no rights and were treated in the most grievous way along with the children. Very harsh world of control and injustices of a patriarchal system. Today we carry vestiges of this same system. It was slightly hidden in a world of etiquette which was a priority establishing the class system. No matter how we see ourselves today we continue to live within this system. It’s cover is by other means. A world of condition love.
Such a shame! The writers thought they had to invent problem upon problem upon problem. What started out with some hope for new chances, now sees those chances threatened and buried. I hate such foul writing. Why can't we just enjoy good fortune without it being ruined all the time? At first I thought it was a shame, that they discontinued this series. Now, I think they were right. All that was needed was less foul writing.
WHY DO THESE PEOPLE WANT OTHERS TO RAISE THEIR CHILDREN ? WOW WHAT KIND OF SICK AND TROUBLED PEOPLE ARE THESE WHERE YOU DON'T WANT YOUR CHILDREN AROUND YOU TO LOVE ON TALK TO THEM DRY THEIR TEARS LOVE ON THEM JUST TALK ABOUT THINGS THAT ARE TROUBLING THEM AND THEY NEED EDUCATION.

Randall had a lot of nerve taking the dead body where she did. The lady was nice to her and she put her on the spot.
Yes I agree, she put that poor woman in a terrible position.

Isabel takes the biscuit for being the single most annoying character in any show I've ever seen or will ever see. She grates on the old nervous system. I do hope that's not her real everyday voice.

Why did they have children?
Donna Payne Their children are merely trophies for their egos. These narcissistic parents see them as extensions of themselves
The main reason is to pass down the fortune and carry on the name.
Inheritance
Was it true that royal youngsters said " off with their heads" in a game? The only people who charge the right price are childcare centres, over $100 approx a day!
Women had no rights and were treated in the most grievous way along with the children. Very harsh world of control and injustices of a patriarchal system. Today we carry vestiges of this same system. It was slightly hidden in a world of etiquette which was a priority establishing the class system. No matter how we see ourselves today we continue to live within this system. It’s cover is by other means. A world of condition love.

I hope the writers of these stories aren't writing from their own life experiences.

MADEIRA is an island of PORTUGAL 🇵🇹 and also a wine of this island!
😡😡😡
