2:34 it's the red one (Micro Sol) you need to soften the transfers. The Blue one (Mirco Set) is to help you get the transfer where you want it, apply a layer first to the area and glide the transfer on top.
Lmao I think my reply to this got automodded or something when i tried to edit it. It said "the blue one is not wrong per se, but the red one is much stronger in softening decals like this". I then edited it for a bit of clarity, backed up my information with a source, but the source was the manufacturer's s_ite (which youtube did not like - it wasn't even a link). Re-typing the edit here to reiterate: The blue bottle prepares the surface, improves adhesion and softens the decal. if you are a complete novice discovering this video, I'd even suggest starting with Micro Set only first as Sol is less forgiving: it is aggressive and it's easier to tear the decal.
You and Duncan Rhodes have helped me realize my miniature painting dreams, I love that given enough time I can paint my guys exactly how I want them now I can always count on your videos for help like this one
thats awsome :) I'm glad your confident in painting miniatures now. its why I make these videos and I'm sure its the same for duncan. keep painting and practicing
Been using decals for the very first time after watching your vid and it worked. Not only did it work, I haven't been cursing once during the process. So thanks a lot!
This is awesome, I haven't touched transfers since 3rd edition, believing them to require forbidden arcane knowledge to actually lie flat without lumps. Turns out it needs microset! Thanks so much, first good transfer I've ever done
Thanks man, been really relying on your videos for a while now and was about to try transfers, before I pulled this up and found I had none of these three items to use. Quick trip to amazon sorted that out, so I can't wait to start applying my first transfers this weekend!
@TableTopReadyRUclips I used to use mail varnish. To anyone reading this *DO NOT DO THAT* the varnish will break down the transfer and it will come apart.
Hi table top ready i know this video was made 2 years ago and it is 2023 now but this was extremely helpful and now my assault intercessor Sargent is complete thank you so much for this video can't wait to see what you upload.
Thanks for this video. I’ll feel a lot more confident now. As a bit of CC - could you perhaps advise on timings here, eg for the soaking, drying times for each step etc?
as someone who just got into warhammer 40k and running space wolves and never dealing with transfer paper before thank you for the video now I can properly mark my units so I don't get asked which chapter

I'm glad I went looking for this on RUclips. The kit instructions don't explain how to do this at any point. I don't know if the assumption is that everyone already knows how to do this. I like WH 40K it just seems inaccessible to new people getting into the hobby.
so many experienced hobbyists and it has been around for a while now and there is so much content and things to get involved with. its very daunting. I'm doing my best to help get involved though :)
I’m so new to this I didn’t even know all the different types of paint until yesterday so this has just made my painting so much better thank you!!! Such an easy tutorial to follow
Thank you, this was my very first tutorial as well and it makes me happy knowing its still out there making a difference ha :D Welcome to the hobby, I hope your enjoying it
Mr. Mark Softer form Mr. Hobby also works really well for softening transfers. The main thing I've noticed with any decal softening solution is that you really need to trust the process. Mr. Mark Softer makes the transfers sort of crinkle up at first, which can be alarming, but once it's dry they really look painted on.
Hiya, first time here to your channel. And I'd just like to say, your intro is probably one of the best, and most creative I've ever seen before! Also, great video.
Thank you very much. I appreciate the comment and glad your found the video useful. Painting lots of space marines will definitely up your highlighting game ha
Just found this channel and wanted to say - damn dude I love your logo. Perfect blend of the 2nd ed 40k logo and AoS one. Also solid tutorial - I'm not new to transfers, but I definitely learned new things here. Cheers!
Thank you very much. Took many designs to arrive at this one. I’m really happy to share knowledge and it actually be useful to people. Thank you for the awesome comment 👍🏻
Incredible guide! Did someone try to just make a little cuts on a decal (to fit shoulder pad better) and apply matt varnish on it in the end? Will it be good enough?
Just want to thank you for this video. I ultimately wanted to go dark krakens but not feeling up to the custom octopus freehand felt if i did a full ultramarine army i could get there... i bought everything from this ardcoat, lahmain medium and transfers as i bought job lots off ebay.... I just did my first redemptor and it worked perfect with nothing crooked. I have a few more walking wartombs, then to my 100 strong firstborn army... i also have a pile of shame i blame on weshammer of blightlord terminators, 2 imperator titans from epik 40k, and a canus rex I dreamed of painting a necron skin flayer style when i get to that level. This video worked awesome though...and while you waited and did nothing while it dried, i watched this on repeat
thank you. there are transfer sheets that have had raven guard on them and you can get upgrade kits and probably find them on ebay for cheep as people prefer to use the moulded pads
you want to cut little notches. they are thin and you will cut all the way through, just try not to make big cuts. I find cutting them once they're in places is easier. If the cuts are too big, you risk the transfer splitting, I also show doing transfers in the new beginner ultramarines video. I show cutting them once in place, I kind of rock the blade which lets me be more careful
I broke three transfers for the shoulders and now I’ve just given up. I’m proud of my minis with or without the decals nonetheless. I don’t know what I’m doing wrong though.
transfers can become brittle once they have dried out again, just try and keep them wet whilst your working and manipulating them. otherwise its just time and practice, i still mess up my transfers as well, so don't worry too much :D
it is tough, you do get extra shoulder pads in kits remember, use them to practice on. I still struggle myself and usually its because I tend to rush the process ha
This video has been a great help. Just wondering how long you recommend waiting between steps? From placing the transfer on the model to adding the micro set and how long do you leave the micro set before using the cotton bud?
I'm trying to apply a tattoo transfer to the abs on one of my chaos cultists, and I'm going to have to look at it tomorrow. I used a setting solution, but it's still kinda wonky. Ty for the tips!
Thank you. I’m really happy you like it. I just buy it from amazon. MICRO SET. It’s about £8 for quite a small bottle, but it lasts ages. I do use it all the time and it’s lasted me over a year
Do you have a video on how to like do ranking with transfers? Like if I buy warhammer 40,000 recruit edition there will be transfer sheets with like markings as number marking how do you use them to rank your space marine? Any help is helpful thanks
Excellent video! I never use a gloss varnish before transfers though, i just use the vallejo decal softener, and then a coat of matt varnish to seal it in, i feel like the ard coat is just a step that you can do without, never had any issues, and any imperfections in you paintwork, will still be there under the ard coat/gloss varnish. How ever i have found issues with "older" GW transfers. Have you had any issues with them? i am talking 10-20 years old transfers, that have been left in a box for use when i master the add transfer step. I feel like its made of a "different" material to the newer ones. The melting processor of the softener ofter ruins the transfer(of the old tranfers).
Thank you. Another reason the hard coat is good is it protects the paint from the solution. I found it can strip the paint a bit and wipe away any highlights I had done. I use to do it without it, its not a massive thing, I chose to include it in the video for best practice. I do still use old transfers that I have, but I would always try and find something more recent if I can. They don't tend to soften very well and they easily rip and fall apart while using them. I guess because of the age maybe. always believe people should always do things they want to do. I never think my way is the absolute way it should be done, it's just what I found works for me :)
@@TableTopReadyRUclips I have not used the product you are using. But yes i know some products can end up dissolving the paint. Never had that issue with the vallejo other than what i wrote about the melting of older transfers. And it could be like you say, the fact that they are old, and perhaps degraded. The ones i have tried bloats, like the acrylic paint does when you dip it into a solver to strip the paint from your models. Still excellent video! =)
Oh, wish I had watched this before, kind of just dunked the hole transfer in water moved of the sheet and slapped it on 😂 Good video though really appreciate it
@TableTopReady This method does look way better, iv only put the one on so far and you can tell between the glossy decal to the almost matt paint, I'm definitely doing this
If your new, I wouldn't worry about micro set just yet. you can if you want, it's upto you. you can leave transfers untill you feel more confident. All in your own time

Agreed.. I’ve been practicing on random stuff with decals I don’t want first

What colors did you use for the red shoulders and how did you get those lieutenant markings so crisp?!
pratice and th eshoulder pads are the same as the ones on paint in my imperial fist tutorial
After having transfers flake off, I've taken to "sandwiching" them between two layers of gloss, then a matte varnish step to knock off the shine.
