    If you guys say so, it must be true. I remember learning STAT meant immediately in Latin, but I was CERTAIN I learned that it stood for "speedy turn around time" long ago. I have yet to find anything to support that, I wish I could remember where I heard it. Thanks for settling this for me.

    In Canada (other countries too?) stat can also be short for Statutory Holiday, meaning a holiday in which your employer must pay you the day's wages regardless of whether you work (commonly abbreviated on pay stubs as 'stat pay') and pay overtime for the hours you do work on that day or any time over than 32 hours over the whole week. It's usually a way of incentivizing employers to offer time off to employees on irregular schedules, or reward those who are forced to work on holidays with what adds up to double-time-and-a-half.

    I work in a hospital lab, and STAT is spelled out as "Shortened Turn-Around Time", referring to tests that have a shorter allowed turn-around time on reporting it before I get alerted that it needs to get done. It's a good example of creating an acronym where none existed I suppose.

    • @davidbeppler3032
      @davidbeppler3032 7 лет назад +3

      That is a case of a doctor thinking he is smarter than he is, and making up "shortened turn around time" to sound like he has an idea what he is talking about, without learning the Latin that his profession was based on. Now you know. Doctors are no smarter than most "intelligent" people. :)

    • @barcelonachair6487
      @barcelonachair6487 7 лет назад +1

      +David Bopper That is BS. Every profession uses terminology that is exclusive to their own daily operations. This person said they worked in a hospital lab, for all you know a lab tech or lab assistant thought of the acronym, because they were tired of repeatedly writing the full term, that is how many short forms are born. You are just demonstrating your hangups about those who have more letters after their name. The original poster alluded to a benign subject matter in a balanced way, he/she presented zero notions about the intelligence of those who create, understand or use acronyms and those who don't. ALL professions use them in some form or another.

    • @SGRODmaster
      @SGRODmaster 7 лет назад

      I looked back through the SOPs but couldn't find a mention of what I was talking about. The couple places Stat testing TAT is mentioned, it's referred to as that or just Stat TAT. Someone might have realized the mistake and corrected it, maybe even after seeing this video. :) And to be fair, the SOP would've been written by a lab tech and reviewed by a pathologist.

    • @barcelonachair6487
      @barcelonachair6487 7 лет назад

      David Beppler you must not be too smart? The point is, repeatedly writing, the FULL term over and over is too long. The person said "shortened turn around time". That is the medical jargon you were referring to. Check your comment.

      If you watch a lot of medical shows on TV, that's where you're most likely to hear it. It's most commonly used in medical settings, especially emergency rooms or operating rooms. "ASAP" (As Soon As Possible) is a lot more relaxed than "stat" (note the "as possible" component), and is more commonly used in military or business settings.

    A more important question might be; 'Is this expression used outside of the US and if no then why the hell should we care?' Also, by way of making up for my snarkiness and as we are talking about mispronunciation too it seems, Did you know that Mount Everest should be pronounced Mount Eve-Rest (as in Adam and Eve) as that is how the man whom it was named after (Sir George Everest) pronounced his name.

      Snapple and Cats Because it wouldn't make much sense to call it a foot bug.

      Primalxbeast why call viruses bugs at all? :p

      Computer viruses & glitches have always been called called bugs, so over time people began calling human biological viruses & glitches "bugs" too.

      Stethacan Thus that was my theory, but my friend said computer bugs and viruses weren't the same thing? :/

      Viruses are not called bugs. Glitches and errors are called bugs, but I have never heard malware and viruses be referred to as bugs.

    I have never heard of stat and I have a professional background and live in the UK. Simon is a typical London wanker (which does not mean that all Londoners are wankers just the wankers).
