You’re right they won’t know and your horn section will probably question the different rhythms in what is often played Soli. Great deconstruction. My favourite thing is spending time on deconstructing soul and motown horn sections. ❤
Hi Jamie, I don't play sax but pretty much enjoy your videos, but there is a rather odd request/question I like to ask you Can you do do saxophone line from Jax Briggs' Friendship from Mortal Kombat 11? I believe you would nail it!
Awesome review, good chance the trumpet player is moving his jaw for this sound. Unlike sax trumpets moving the lower jaw is normal. For instance shakes are lower jaw movement.
Thank you so much for the video and pdf! I recently finished my third arrangement of Superstition for a horn section, and I have spent countless hours listening to various phrases on repeat without the benefit of isolated tracks. It's fascinating to finally hear them playing their parts clearly! I managed to correct a lot between v1 and v3 of my charts, but I still had plenty wrong and no idea of all the tricks they played on the chorus riff. The question remains as to how much of this I would try to get a horn section to learn, depending on the number of people, instrumentation and skill level. It will be great if I get a chance to try sometime soon.
Well I've just picked up the sax again after a layoff of around 6 months, just joined a little practice band, doing some blues brothers stuff. Today its raining outside and you have just given me todays practice. hitting the minor pentatonic and seeing if I can smash superstition. thanks for the inspiration. one question though, If i'm playing this as the only horn player in the band (tenor in my case) would you combine bits of the score or focus on one part of the overall score ?
Brilliant video Jamie. I’ve always found the main issue with Superstition is guitarists usually play it in E. I made the classic mistake of transcribing the horn line from the original Stevie version (missing the details you talk about). When I went to the open mic, I started playing and quickly realised I was in the wrong key. The guitarists were kind enough to change keys for me. One big learning opportunity.
This is awsome as usual. Is there any chance you can transcribe the improvisation solo of Sonny Stitt in Fly me to the moon, from the 1971 Albom: Just the way it was: Live at the left bank. I find it an amazing solo, but almost imposible to trancribe, for me of course, I'm sure you'll pretty much nail it.
If you check the album cover you will see that David is listed, and if you speak to David he will tell you the, yes played on that cut. i rest my case.
That’s a great analysis but at the end of the day, a dance floor full of partying folks really couldn’t care less. And if another horn player came up and tried to offer constructive criticism on playing it in a more correct manner, he’d be laughed out of the venue. I’ve played the song countless times for decades. After learning it off a record without all the isolation tools.
@mr.saxplayer4373 I have the same question for Jamie, and all the other RUclipsrs who isolate parts! I thought they were getting the stems from someone who has legal access to the original recordings. But, I don't really know.
@@MarkPeotter not sure - there is a software from Hit'n Mix called DeepAudio which is able to separate stets, at least Vokal, guitar Bass , drum, Violine and "other" which means all horn parts are together in one stem, but I'm not sure Jamie has used this one ...

As a keyboard player, I found this video VERY useful
Glad it helped!

My pleasure!

Nice analysis and explanation. Also you've got a killer tone on that tenor!
Thanks 🙏🏻

Love this comment. You’re like me!

That’s a great question actually. Probably you’d focus on the trumpet lines I guess.
Excellent job, Jamie. Thank you very much for the PDF and the video. I enjoy each of your videos, though my sax skills are very limited.
You're very welcome!
Who knew how much detail there is. :)
😉
This is so amazing good! A bit nerdy but in the very best way. 🤩🎷
Glad you like it!
This is really helpful! Now, if only me my bandmates could figure out how to play “I Wish” correctly…
Ha!
Super cool! Thanks!
Glad you like it!
Love your sound!
Thanks 🙏🏻
You are truly fabulous. Bravo.
Thank you! 🙏
It always drives me crazy when they add that extra note in the beginning 🎷

We’re you the only horn. And if so which part did you use.
I was. I played the horn line.@@ApertureLad
Jeff Beck also played on the album Jamie.

I mean, yes I could, but I’m
afraid I can’t do it just for you my friend! 😬
Hello, can you please make a video about how to play "Touch Me" by The Doors?
Yeh that’s pretty epic actually.
Thanks for this one. Could you please break down the Saxophone part of Private Dancer by Tina Turner, the album version.
Thanks for the suggestion.
Is that the bass clar reed n your horn? Sounds great! Same strength as red box?
Can’t remember if that was the bc reed or if I’m back with Nexus 3.5s?
You should totally make a guid for Michael Breckers solo in “planet of the New Orleans” by dire straits
Good suggestion, thanks! 🙏
ESTAVA ESPERANDO ESSSSAAAA
Great!
That’s some analysis Jamie! I’m in a band that want to play Superstition. I’m the only horn (Tenor). They want to play in E. What’s my best approach?
Do it like the video but one semi tone up!
@@GetYourSaxTogether Ha ha! Right.
The second F also has a grace note. Clearly heard as you played slow.
Yeh that’s more complex. They really vary that second F. Sometimes scooped, sometimes not. It’s kinda loose.
Surely David Sanborn also played on Talking Book.
Not on Superstition. He’s defo on Tuesday Heartbreak.
@@GetYourSaxTogether Yeah, the sound is unmistakable.
Done
👍
So many players do it, its not worth mentioning it to them 🤣
😎
?
I can't even begin to tell you how many times I've heard people on jobbing gigs play that verse riff wrong...
Right?
A lot of bands don't even play the intro drum part.
True.
@GetYourSaxTogether I was playing bass in a band and they just didn't play that part lol.
The DETAILS do matter :)
👌🏻
There's one more sax player you forgot about, an that player is David Sanborn.

@@ronaldwalters4507 but it doesn’t sound like there’s alto on the track? I’ve got the stems.
It's impossible because on a local level everyone plays it the same way and in Em
Yeah, true.

Why so much reverb on the sax ? 😉
Why not?

Now tackle how many people play the Flintstones theme incorrectly... it's not all chromatic...
Ha! Love the geekery! How about the opening of disco inferno then? 😵
Fantastic analysis Jamie!! Do you tell which software / tools you use to isolate the horn section so perfect from the rest ?
