  • Port Moresby is one of five pilot cities -- along with Quito, Kigali, New Delhi and Cairo -- participating in UN Women's Global Programme "Safe Cities Free of Violence against Women and Girls." Operating successfully since its December 2010 launch, the project, entitled "Port Moresby: A Safer City for Women and Girls," aims to develop, test, evaluate and disseminate a model that makes cities safer for women and girls.
Port Moresby -- Papua New Guinea's capital -- is characterized by poor and crowded living conditions, a growing population with high urban migration, increasing cultural diversity and ethnic tensions, and a widening gap between rich and poor. It has been ranked as one of the five least-liveable cities in the world based on scores in five areas: stability, health care, culture and environment, education and infrastructure. Large natural resource extraction projects in mining, petroleum and liquefied natural gas have generated solid increases in GDP over the last decade, but economic growth has not translated into the development of the country or its people.
The city's violent crime threatens the safety and security of all citizens, particularly women and girls, who live in fear of physical and verbal sexual harassment and assault and are too often victims of these and other forms of gender-based violence. The city's marketplaces are among the most unsafe public spaces where gambling, drinking, drug sales and consumption, rape, gang rape, sexual harassment, intimidation and ethnic fights occur on a daily basis. Consequently, the markets provide the key entry point for mobilising residents to make their city safer by deepening the understanding of every citizen's rights and responsibilities and promoting women's leadership and participation in efforts to improve governance in the markets.

My mother is Fijian with buiniga ("frizzy") hair texture. In America, she's often mistaken for African-American but, hey, we're all from Africa and proud of it. Fiji is the easternmost island of Melanesia. We've intermingled with some Polynesians, particularly the Tongans and Samoans. In Lau Group islands, you'll see the mixture among the local Fijians. On the eastern side of Fiji, such as Viti Levu, dark-skinned and frizzy hair predominates.

As a Papua New Guinean woman i feel ashamed of this footage and what my country men are doing to women....we women are now standing up and saying no to violence...although it might take a while to get the message out there we are determined that the time will come where women can walk the streets without fear of being raped or harrassed...where women can speak their minds...where women are free! ...and i mean not only PNG but in other countries who are facing the same issues...having said that i am proud to be a Papua New Guinean...i love my country, my culture and my traditions...and to those who have criticised my country yes we can better manage our wealth given the time...we are only a young nation and there is a long way to go to develop. May GOD bless this nation!

Papuans, i want to say you what i think about you, few papuans who will see my comment here. Think about your ancestors, how they lived not so long ago. Poverty did not existed. Some Drugs or alcohol weren't used by your ancestors. They were happy in the forest, they gave birth to you. You are awesome people with incredible mental and physical skills, you are strong. I think most of you (as me) love sensations, aventure, fun, to discover new things, to explore, to take risks. You are certainly interested in the western culture, that was new for you since not long ago. But think about western culture, you have to work to earn pieces of paper we call money, but there is not always enough money. And the time we spend working we are not free. If you are working you can't do something you really want. And at the end of the day you are tired. And we sell our lifetime working for paper sheets, and then when we are old we can't work anymore and we can't do exiting things. The elder in the western society (most of them) think of their lives they had wasted being slaves to money. And regret. Think about how poisonous western culture is For our health and for our wealth.
I personally want to leave this modern cture, i want to live as my europeans ancestors did long time ago, i want to hunt like them, to think like them, but i will never find their culture because it has been lost. You PAPUANS have the chance to have YOUR culture still alive. Your ancestors gift to you. So don't lose it. And if you want, break free from your chains and live like your wealthy and powerful ancestors. They will be proud of you.

Do Not even Think , ever to visit this country, just a loss of money. People are extremely Rude, loads of rubbish in the streets and wild dogs. Just one Mall in Port Moresby, very dated and broken elevators, also items are overpriced. I spent 6 months here for my company with my girlfriend Juli. Forget going out at night, we hired Two private security guards and driver, streets are NOT safe dued to endemic locals on Alcoholist problems and drugs, it is very common to spot locals men completely Naked. If they see my blonde girl, they act as dirty sexual perverts. Corruption is everywhere.. police department is useless, cow meat is terrific, just pork or chicken, fish is ok. This country is Disgusting in all way, locals live as tribes, with a cheap mentality- NEVER think of going out alone at night in Port Moresby, Never. And keep your values in Hotel or Resort safe, cash and gold and watch, crime is normal here. So trust this feedback, this land lives in Total Anarchy State, and no signs of improvement what so ever. So we were here, actually I was for job purposes, most repulsive place on Earth. Go to New Zealand instead.

Dear sir/madam please forgive @Molossian's comment, but I will try to answer a tiny portion of your curiosity about us . I am of course a Melanesian from Papua New Guinea and we do share phenological features with Africans in general to put it plain, we were not brought from Africa by the Europeans sailors but migrated from Africa to present day New Guinea Island and have inhabited it for approximately 60,000 years or so. During that journey our genetic make up has changed quiet substantially :)

I beg your pardon madam/sir I was only stating that Melanesia along the coastal regions were accessible to seafarers, the Polynesians had contact with Melanesia in various places. It is then relevant to say they do share a tiny portion of genetics called the Polynesian motif instilled in Melanesia. I know that the blonde hair feature is exclusive to Melanesian and aboriginals and is a different genetic marker from European gene. By the way Fijians are mixed Melanesian and Polynesian :)

WE PNG not need to worry..see it's only 41 years..unlike other countries they are 100 plus years of self governance..we will change the country as the process of development take it process..We need to have strong legal system, scrutinize bureaucracies, responsible citizenship, honest and good leadership will bring changes..look at USA, UK, European, Asian, they were once came from a stone age to modernisation..I don't regret as an educated person..I see process and challenges to step on..if you are speaking because of your fore father did, you're not near to them...I believe my forefathers removed the Europeans who tried to step into my land. They removed and preserved the land and now we are a free people .I see we have much to enjoy then to complain and see from the social indicator that is 0.5% below other developed countries in the world..we are rich that's why the world is watching closely..Keep focus and aim high...

I get angry & frustrated when I see videos of the various ways females are abused and intimidated. We need an army of strong and educated women to protect mothers and daughters taking care of families. I pray for the day we collaborate and support all organizations that make main streets and market places, bed rooms and board rooms safe so both genders can grow to their full capacity. STOP VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN; don't make our bodies a battle field for economical gains. Take a stand. SPEAK UP.

The situation could be accredited to the number of men in commercial employment, I myself am not from Port Moresby but in Goroka there is a vast difference between the number of men working in the commercial scene. I can't understand why most of the customer interface positions in stores are held by women, maybe there is a level of comparability with the female gender but some of these positions can still be given to men prevent them from aimlessly roaming the streets, committing crimes.

Most of the previous comments are lacking a bit of insight and unable to connect the dots as to who these people are about quite a bit of what has been discussed these people. The fact that most of the history books that had/has been presented to the world, left out key pieces to the puzzle, as to who they are. The largest land mass in the Pacific Ocean (Australia ) once sustained a black kinky haired people when the white man arrived in Australia. They recorded that there was a African presence among the many tribes that they encountered. These tribes were systematically wiped out, and the Aborigines who we see today with straight hair, survived in greater numbers. (This is where I believe that the Asian type came about.) Knowing that there were also tribes of a African type people inhabiting Tasmania and Australia, at the time of the white man's arrival there, also proves to be more than likely that the African type were the progenitors of the Australian Aborigines (who the world is so much more familiar with). However, the African type must also be labeled, Australian Aborigine. The features of some of the people of Papua New Guinea reveal a lot of the same facial characteristics of the present day Australian Aborigines. Some of the same facial characteristics of the people of Papua resemble the Samoan type in neighboring islands in the pacific, which also includes the dark skinned East Indian type. The African type people of the Andaman Islands (just south of India) build boats that resemble boats built by the Samoans and Hawaiians and they claim to be the progenitors of the bodysurfing water-boards. Presently, the people of Papua range from dark skinned with kinky hair, to light skinned with straight hair.

It would be wise to just beef up security. Don't allow people to sexually abuse the women because they are the backbone of every nation. A security presence that will be brave and intervene if they see such nonsense can solve that problem. But they must be trained and paid well. In fact, hire some of the area boys to do it and be vigilantes let the community raise funds and if the market women are making money they can pay them for their safety. Its not an impossible task.

There is nothing wrong with aid, what matters is how it is being used. I do not trust the PNG government with money, it will most likely be misused. Nations become too dependent on aid and that is not good like PNG instead of being innovative we will be dependent. "Give a men a fish and he will live a another day, but teach a man how to fish and he will never go hungry" something like that teach them how to be independent that is the true goal not to spoon feed them.

There is no solid proof to what you are saying concerning your belief that the first people are from Asia. (Dead Sea Scrolls) Why not read the account of Genesis chapter 1 and see where God put the first man and woman Adam & Eve, it was nowhere near Asia, more like Africa or The Middle East. Africa is a very big continent, and the Middle East was probably attached to it before the flood.

Everybody has land and relatives in PNg. If nothing is happening for you in the city then it's time to go back to the village. A simple but honest life is better than living like a criminal and beggar in the city!

some are still acting as uncivilized and really they do have attitude problems.so, whom do we blame here?We should blame the whole system from higher levels to the grassroots.very sorry, and it is a sickness which we have to eradicate.

Are these New Guinea islanders settlers from Africa? They look like Africans and even sound like them when the island is so far from Africa.

you just proved right then and there that you have no clue. It's simple dude.pay attention to history.Israelites were exiled from Israel around 500-600 bc to babylon and various other REMOTE places. The papuans didn't get to the papuan islands and other various islands UNTIL about 500 bc!That's when the 1st settlements of Papuans In S.E asia date back to. Not to forget because israel broke God's commandments they would be led into poverty, be oppressed and under captivity EVERYWHERE they went

That's not trie. Those features are entirely Melanesia. Many Papuans have blonde hair like Aborigines and their hair is straight and frizzy. Plus not even all Polynesians are Mongoloid. For instance Fijians have course to frizzy hair like Papuans. Many of their hair is black however unlike papuans who have many blondes. Look at Samoans and Fijians and how they differ. They are BOTH Polynesian, not Melanesian but one looks Tahitian and the other Oriental. Papuans cary also! That's what's special!
