  • For the past half-century Genoa City, Wisconsin, has been the setting for high drama in "The Young and the Restless," making it TV's most-watched soap opera. Correspondent Mo Rocca talks with the stars and executive producer of "Y&R," about some of the most cherished aspects of the show, from its characters' marital gyrations and genre traditions, to its theme music.

I agree with Eric, soaps have never been given the respect or the admiration they absolutely deserve. I began with Dark Shadows and went from there to all the rest. They have kept me intrigued, exasperated and fascinated my entire life and I am never ashamed to admit I watch them to this day. They transported me into another place at times when in my own life, I was struggling. Those actors & crews will never even know how they saved me because of the incredible hard work they put in every day. And whenever they roll the credits, I pay attention and always watch until they end. It's my way of honoring them.

The elderly neighbors living across the street always tuned in to The Edge of Night at 4:00 every weekday and I would meander my way over to their home around 3:45 to say "hi." Of course they invited me in for milk and cookies but I was really there for the "adult" topics that were truly eye-opening to a 9 year old! This segment brought back those long forgotten moments and a smile on this lovely Sunday morning here in New York City! Thanks!

The Young & the Restless celebrating 50 years on CBS, while General Hospital is celebrating 60 years on ABC.
You can really tell that these shows have experienced so much over the years, as well as receiving lots of warmth and appreciation, from fans, all over.

Growing up, I would visit my grandparents for 2 weeks every summer. My grandmother never missed an episode. So I eventually started watching it with her and got hooked on it. We had a friend from our Church, and she admits that she never missed an episode of All My Children, as well as another, who never missed As The World Turns (and still remembered Kennedy being shot, during one of the episodes). As I learned from those two, I thought, “my goodness”, you’ve seen the show unfold before your own eyes, after that many years.

My love for Y&R started in '84, at the age of 4😂 My aunt who watched over all the cousins in the neighborhood fed us everyday at 12:30, when Y&R came on, and after eating most of us didn't go back outside to play until 1:30, when it went off. Y&R is still part of my day, it makes me feel closer to the women I loved that are no longer here who I watched it with: my mom, my grandmothers, and my aunts.

Me too, our mom got my sis n I addicted! Especially those long Summer school breaks. Young & Restless & General Hospital top faves. I think I stopped watching after 15 years, only bc got a little too crazy with actors coming back from the dead and more adultery. But one thing for sure, when I hear the theme song for Y&R it still melts my heart and brings back so much nostalgia of my younger years. Love it till this day.

The most beloved character the show has ever had in my opinion. the 90's in when the show reached it peak. the spell is broken by now. but I still have fond memories of my love for the show....,

Y&R 70s-90s absolutely GOLDEN! Casting, chemistry, writing, directing, lightning, vibes, flow etc...
Post 2000s uhh...aside from the iconic characters mere presence, kind of unwatchable now, sorry :-/ .

00:23 Too late, their was an update arrangement in the late 1990's/early 2k. But even the original got remixed a bit slightly. check out the openings between the 70's and current versions and their are slight differences.

I remember when Catherine Chandler drove a car off a cliff on purpose and killed her husband who wanted to leave her.

They had to take it off the air in Jamaica because people were caught up in the lives of the characters instead of doing work and paying bills. On top of school kids, thats all they could talk about.
